Ask WNW: Claudio Castagnoli, Real Matches, Kayfabe, Eugene

Written by Richard Gray on Jul 16, 2007 - 11:01:38 AM

What happened to Claudio Castagnoli? Didn’t he get a WWE developmental deal?

Castagnoli was given a WWE developmental deal in November 2006; however, he was released before he started to work in their developmental territories. His release remains somewhat of a mystery as it was thought that it had something to do with his work visa and legal status in the United States, however, Castagnoli denied these claims. He said that he wouldn’t have been able to work in Ring of Honor had he not had a visa. Today Castagnoli continues to work the independent wrestling circuits in the United States, recently qualifying for the third round qualifier for the vacant NWA World Heavyweight title.

We all know that pro-wrestling is fake and that fights are storylined, hence wrestlers try not to hurt each other. However, do you have any knowledge of matches where wrestlers were enemies in real life and turned the storylined match into a real, uncontrolled brawling?

Most of the time performers remain very professional when working a match. Turning a match into an uncontrolled brawl, especially in WWE, would result in immediate termination from the company. Many times wrestlers who face people that they do not like will work “stiff” with their opponent, meaning that they will connect with more real-life blows than they would otherwise. Veteran workers will often “stiff” younger guys as they feel that they must pay their dues in order to advance into the business. One of the most well known examples of a wrestler working stiff would be Bob Holly taking on Tough Enough 3 winner Matt Cappotelli on the MTV reality series. If you saw the episode, Holly was very tough on Cappotelli, and was widely criticized by many writers on the Internet.

What does kayfabe mean?

Kayfabe is a wrestling term that refers to the portrayal of events within the wrestling industry as real, but are actually staged or worked. In other words, it means something is “staged” or part of a storyline. Often when we write about something that is kayfabe on the Internet we put it quotation marks. For example, the Vince McMahon “death” angle.

Who is Eugene? Is he really "mentally challenged" or just playing a role?

Eugene’s real name is Nick Dinsmore and no he is not “mentally challenged”. I, along with most Internet wrestling writers, despise the storyline. Dinsmore is a very good wrestler and the whole “mentally challenged” storyline is something that I feel should not be joked about. I’m not sure what Dinsmore thinks about it, but I heard a fan told him at a WWE house show a few years back that he deserved better, in which Dinsmore allegedly agreed. However, that is noting more than rumor and hearsay.
