Batista's Return, Orton's Push, Budget Cuts, Matches

Written by Richard Gray on Mar 16, 2009 - 1:26:00 PM

What is the latest on Batista? When is he scheduled to return?

According to the documents that leaked on the Internet a couple of weeks ago, WWE officials are expecting Batista to return from his hamstring injury in May. Batista has been telling people both privately and publicly that he will be ready to return next month, in fact, he has said he feels he will be ready in time for WrestleMania. Due to the fact he has been out for the majority of the build to WrestleMania, I do not see him working the show but anything is possible.

What are your thoughts on the current push of Randy Orton?

I have been high up on the stuff Randy Orton has done with Hunter on Raw the past couple of weeks. Orton is working on an entire different level and in my opinion is the best thing going in WWE right now. Orton has elevated every aspect of his work - he's in great shape, his mic skills are as good as anyone, and his ring work has followed suit. It will be interesting to see how WWE keeps his momentum, especially if a WWE Championship change happens at WrestleMania.

With WrestleMania 25 in April and no PPV in March was this a strategic move included with the $20 million WWE budget cuts?

No, WWE is doing a lot of things to cut spending but they have not reduced their pay-per-view schedule for 2009. WrestleMania has varied from year to year whether it happens the final Sunday in March or the first Sunday in April. Next year the event will move back to March as it is scheduled to take place on March 28, 2010 from Phoenix, Arizona. WWE is running the same amount of pay-per-views this year as they did last year unless something unforeseeable happens.

How much of a match is pre-scripted and how much is decided by the workers themselves?

It just depends on the call from creative. Any interference (such as a run-in) is obviously scripted but a lot of the specific spots are worked out by the people in the match. Neither the WWE creative team nor the producer for the match give the workers spot by spot instructions, but they do tell them the goal of the match, what is going to happen, the outcome, etc.
