HBK's Return Angle, More Titles In WWE, Guest Hosts
Written by Richard Gray on Aug 12, 2009 - 12:45:45 PM
You stated that the HBK return was horrible, but I couldn't disagree more. It came off as VERY funny to everyone I watched it with, and it stays with the spirit of Degeneration-X that was established when they first reformed in the mid 2000's. A PG DX is what they gave us then, mostly due to HBK's faith, and so it came off as hilarious that he kicked a little girl. One of the best promos they did back in that time was when HBK was mad and he started superkicking people in the hallway. My question is...What exactly was so bad?
I have received emails from readers that agree with you in that Shawn Michaels' return was well done. However, I still completely disagree. Shawn Michaels has not been seen on WWE television since having one of the best matches in the company's history at WrestleMania 25. They setup a perfect tease two weeks ago to book a surprise HBK run-in on live television. Instead, Michaels makes his return to WWE television in a series of pre-taped vignettes where he is working as a cook in a cafeteria. Not only did the set look fake, the segments made no sense. Why would HBK be working in a cafeteria after coming off one of the greatest matches in WWE history? It would be one think if they would have done an angle where Shawn was "fired" from WWE but with no explanation, he is working in a fake cafeteria flipping burgers. The part where the old lady said "suck it" was funny but I'm not sure how people could think Shawn superkicking a little girl could be funny. One person even emailed me and asked me if I had ever walked through a Wal-Mart and wanted to kick a kid in the face?! Absolutely not! I wasn't even offended at the kick, it just made no sense. Michaels should have made his returning superkicking Ted DiBiase or Cody Rhodes then followed it up with DX humor. There are a thousand different ways WWE could have brought Michaels back to television but I feel the way they did it on Monday was the worst possible way.
Do you think ECW needs a secondary championship on the brand?
No I am against adding more titles to WWE. The company has a hard enough time utilizing the titles they have, adding more would make them nothing more than props.
Since this week's Raw with Sgt. Slaughter as host did a rating near enough the same as "Raw is Shaq", and was also in my opinion was the best Raw since the guest host thing started with Ted DiBiase a close second. Do you think we'll see more former ex-wrestling hosts instead of having a good 30 minutes taken out of an already advertising packed show to promote a second rate film?
Monday's edition of Raw did a good rating and proved to WWE officials they do not need a celebrity to garner a respectable number. I'm not sure if it means we are going to see less celebrities but it gives the office confidence when Vince McMahon decides to scrap the guest host gimmick.
