Match Outcomes, HHH's Influence, Flair, CM Punk

Written by Richard Gray on Apr 1, 2008 - 2:26:23 PM

All the good complementary things said about your site – I would just like to say ditto. My question is – generally, how far in advance does the in ring guys know exactly how the match will be booked? For example – when did Randy get told he was retaining or when did Edge hear that he was dropping the strap?

Thanks for the compliment! It is hard to give you an exact answer to this question because the match outcomes are changed so frequently up until they actually happen. Randy Orton could have been told two weeks ago that he would be dropping the WWE Championship and got to Raw the week before WrestleMania and they could have told him that he was retaining. I don’t know if that actually happened (as I was giving you a hypothetical situation) but I do know that there was serious talk of putting the title on Triple H. Match decisions are finalized at the shows as usually the wrestlers involved get together with a road agent who gives them the outcome from creative and they draw it out.

Given the fact that Triple H did not win the WWE title as we thought he would at Wrestlemania, and given the rumours that CM Punk is likely to move to Raw to cash in his Money in the Bank opportunity at some point, would you say that perhaps his pull backstage is not as great as was previously thought?

No. Triple H is in the McMahon family and has significant creative pull. The decision was made that it was not the right time to take the WWE Championship off of Randy Orton. The fact that the ECW Championship and World Heavyweight Championship were booked to change at WrestleMania could have played a factor in the decision or WWE could have decided to go in another direction. As we say all the time, things in WWE change so much that it is impossible to project exactly what is going to happen.

Do you think Ric Flair will ever return to the ring?

I think that Ric Flair will continue to do Public Relations work for WWE and make an occasional cameo appearance on television but I do not think that he will wrestle again. I could be wrong (and I hope that I am), however, it really does appear that we have seen the last of Flair in the ring.

Before Wrestlemania I read that the favorites for the MITB were Jericho, MVP, and Kennedy. Why did WWE decide to go with CM Punk?

The original plan was for Jeff Hardy to win the Money in the Bank ladder match. When he was suspended the match was pretty much wide open and I the decision for Punk to win was probably made based on the company wanting to give him a bigger role. MVP is expected to continue his feud against Matt Hardy, Kennedy won last year, and Jericho is already an established superstar. WWE used the match to somewhat legitimize CM Punk as a WWE superstar.
