Orton/HHH, MSG Incident, Kayfabe, Tazz's Replacement

Written by Richard Gray on Apr 1, 2009 - 11:08:26 AM

Does the Randy Orton/Triple H feud remind you of the Attitude Era days?

There have been parts of it that have reminded me of WWE's golden days. I have been very high up on the work that Randy Orton and Hunter have done on Raw the past several weeks. The amount of realism in the angle has been compelling and added an element of drama that seems to be missing in wrestling nowadays. The final segment of Raw that included the return of Vince McMahon was awesome.

I was reading on Triple H on Wikipedia and there was a picture of Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall and said something about the MSG incident. Can you shed some light on what the MSG incident was?

The incident happened at a WWE house show in 1996 at Madison Square Garden where Scott Hall and Shawn Michaels were working as babyfaces and Triple H and Diesel (Kevin Nash) were working as heels. At the end of the show, all four embraced as Nash and Hall were leaving WWE to go to World Championship Wrestling. All four were (and still are) very close friends and were known as the Kliq backstage in WWE. They are infamously known for their political stroke to be able to get in Vince McMahon's ear.

Maybe I'm being a little too dramatic but don't you think it kind of spoils the mood slightly when wrestlers make light of current storylines and don't take them seriously anymore outside of the ring. Like for example Jeff Hardy joking in a magazine interview that he's fighting Matt because he didn't support his art career? I remember when wrestlers had to take kayfabe to the extreme. I remember Bret Hart saying he used to stay in character even when he was in bars and other public places.

I am all about being old school but I don't think it's that big of a deal today. For those that do not know, the comment this question is regarding is where Jeff Hardy jokingly told Royal Flush Magazine that he was fighting his brother Matt at WrestleMania because he didn't support his art career. I don't really even consider this comment breaking kayfabe as it was being said in a joking context. Nonetheless it's very hard in today's business to remain in kayfabe 24/7. There are so many resources out there such as WrestlingNewsWorld.com; anyone above the age of 13 can easily figure out the difference between what is storyline and what is not. There will always be an endless debate on whether smart fans help or hurt the business, but I think as long as people are interested in the business, it will continue to thrive.

With Tazz not renewing his contract, who do you foresee taking his place next to JR?

I haven't been given specific names but I have talked to people in WWE who have said it will probably be someone with experience. Matt Striker will be available at WrestleMania with the lack of ECW's presence on the card and I would imagine Jerry Lawler will work with Jim Ross at some points . If the rumors end up holding true and JBL does retire, I could see him moving back to the announce table. I posted more on Tazz, WWE, and his replacement on Wrestling News World Premium at this link.
