Punk's Win, Morgan A Gladiator, DiBiase/Rhodes, Hardy
Written by Richard Gray on Jul 22, 2008 - 10:31:09 AM
My question is in regards to how Punk retained his title at The Great American Bash. What do you think it says about WWE's faith in Punk that he had to win his first title defense on PPV by double DQ? They wouldn't put him over Batista clean, yet they didn't want to take the title off him. To me, they picked too important a match to have Kane interfere and continue his "is he alive or dead" storyline.
I think that it showed that WWE is still unsure of the direction that they want to take with CM Punk as World Heavyweight Champion. If Punk would have gone over Batista clean then it would have killed a lot of momentum for a possible rematch at SummerSlam. The World Title picture is jammed packed right now with JBL, Batista, Cena, and Kane so it will be interesting to see what WWE decides to take at SummerSlam. However, if you are a CM Punk fan, I would not be disappointed because at least it appears that they are going to give him an extended run as World Heavyweight Champion.
I was watching American Gladiators last night and they introduced a new male gladiator named: "Beast". Either I'm going crazy or this Beast Gladiator is Matt Morgan. I am crazy or what? And if that is Matt Morgan why would TNA let him do this if they are starting to give him more air time and a push.
You are not crazy! The Gladiator named Beast is Matt Morgan from TNA Wrestling. It took awhile for the negotiations to be worked out; however, Morgan was able to agree to terms to appear on the show in addition to his contract with TNA Wrestling. TNA even broke the news that Morgan would be appearing on American Gladiators on their official website. I do not have full details on how Morgan is allowed under his TNA deal to appear on the show but he obviously got permission to do so. TNA contracts are not as strict as WWE contracts as they still allow wrestlers to compete in the Indies but on a limited basis.
Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes are young and obviously have lots of potential. What do you think of a heel turn for Jim Duggan as a manager to DiBiase and Rhodes for one last run in a legitimate role on Raw? It seems like it could be fitting, but then again just a bad idea. What are your thoughts?
I have no problem with "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan working occasional house shows and dark matches or even doing a job every now and then on Raw, however, I am completely against him getting any kind of major role on WWE television. Duggan is a guy that gets a good reaction from the fans that is great for nostalgic purposes, however, he is not a guy that I want to see dominating WWE TV or on pay-per-view. A lot of people have suggested a manager for DiBiase and Rhodes and I'm not so sure why. Both are excellent talkers, have great looks, and enough credibility with who they are to prosper without anyone helping elevate them.
I have always been a huge mark when it comes to Matt & Jeff Hardy; my question is regarding Matt's future. Having just dropped the U.S. Title what does WWE management have planned for him?
While I have not heard details on what WWE has planned for Matt Hardy, they could have had him drop the United States Title to Shelton Benjamin to get the title back on SmackDown. Hardy is scheduled to work in a number one contender's match for the ECW Championship against The Miz, John Morrison, and Finlay on tonight's ECW on Sci-Fi so I do not think that it is too far of a stretch to say that he could be challenging for that championship. I will admit that I was surprised to see Hardy drop the U.S. Title to Shelton at The Great American Bash but I'm assuming that WWE has different plans for him. I seriously doubt that he is going to be buried.
