Randy Orton In 10 Years, WWE Salaries, Non-Compete, More

Written by Ryan Gray on Dec 22, 2010 - 9:56:30 AM

Today's edition of Ask WNW is a special retro edition. To submit your question for the next installment of Ask WNW, email: AskWNW@wrestlingnewsworld.com

Is Randy Orton finally getting his push as the top guy in WWE? How do you think Orton will rank in 10 years when you compare him to the legends in the business?

Randy Orton has been pushed as one of the top guys in WWE for the past several years. He and John Cena are the faces of the Raw brand and Orton has earned it. Orton recently signed a monster WWE contract (a 10 year deal) and will finish his career with the company. If he stays healthy I think he'll rank right on up with stars such as The Rock, Steve Austin, Bret Hart and The Undertaker. I'm not alone as I've had wrestlers that work for TNA send me emails raving about his work.

What's the average salary for the top WWE Superstars and Divas?

With the wide range of salaries in WWE, it's nearly impossible to give an accurate average. A main event talent (such as John Cena) has a downside guarantee that is going to be in the hundreds of thousands while a developmental contract includes a downside in the $25,000 range. Workers such as Christian have downsides in the ballpark of $75,000 and Beth Phoenix has one around $100,000. A worker makes a percentage of their downside each week they are with WWE and are paid it as long as they are with the company (regardless of being injured). The only time the pay stops is when a worker is suspended. Workers are then paid bonuses on show appearances, merchandise sold, etc.

Are there any current plans for Jim Ross to return to the broadcast table?

There are no current plans for Jim Ross to return to WWE as a broadcaster. This wasn't Jim Ross' decision as the company made it for him because of issues with his health. JR's new position in the company is a person that evaluates talent and helps out backstage at pay-per-views.

If a WWE Superstar is released, can WWE rehire them when their 90-day non-compete agreement is in effect?

Yes, WWE can rehire workers that are in the 90-day non-compete agreement. The agreement is placed in WWE contracts to prevent workers from getting fired then showing up with a competing company the following week. It was started when WWE and WCW were doing battle and workers would jump ship all the time.
