Raw Rating Plummets Under CM Punk Angle, Bella Bullies, Season 2 Of Tough Enough, Finlay's Firing

Written by Richard Gray on Jul 13, 2011 - 9:09:41 AM

Ok.. So this is what I don't get. CM Punk cut one of the best promo's in years yes.. But he's leaving. Why? Because he never got full support for his character? I don't know. But why give it him now? Why give him a title shot when he's leaving? Why not try and elevate someone else who they can make a longer program with? I don't think I've ever seen a worker get this kind of push when they are about to leave.

While the last I heard CM Punk has not signed a new WWE contract, I have to believe company officials thought he was staying when they originally booked this angle. If Vince McMahon thought without a shadow of a doubt he was leaving, why would he give him a title shot? CM Punk wants a commitment to his character and the money that goes along with it (although he says it's not about the money). One thing that may seriously hurt his case is this week's Raw rating (2.9). I know everyone is going to point out stiff competition with the MLB Home Run Derby amongst other things but WWE officials are going to see the lower number with Punk being the center of attention. It's not necessarily a fair way to evaluate it but while the Internet has raved about Punk's work, it hasn't caused a spike in viewership and that may "ease the blow" to WWE officials if he does end up leaving. Also I wanted to note that when Bret Hart was headed to WCW, he was actually WWE Champion and booked in a title match on pay-per-view (the infamous 1997 Survivor Series).

Can you please tell me how the character booking of the Bella Twins picking on Kelly Kelly is not considered bullying? I mean, I honestly have no feelings toward the characters one way or another. However, I do feel that it's hypocritical to have an anti-bullying campaign, but then show on TV ways to bully people, specifically females. Females that happen to be prominent IN promoting the bullying campaign too.

The Bella Twins are being booked as "bullies" as part of their heel gimmick. Remember the controversial stuff they did with Kharma before she was written off television because she is pregnant? Kharma's too big, Kelly Kelly's too small. They are making fun of other Divas to portray bullies as being bad. This is the argument that WWE will give to anyone that says it's hypocritical because of their anti-bullying campaign as they will argue the bullies are heels.

Have you heard any talk of a second season for Tough Enough? If not, how likely is it there will be one?

Bill DeMott recently said on Twitter if there is another season of WWE Tough Enough it will be the same trainers but he reiterated that would be if there was another season. So far no plans have been announced.

I think the firing of Finlay is completely ridiculous. He was just trying to get good heat on The MiZ. What are your thoughts on the decision to fire him?

WWE wanted to send a message in the firing of Finlay and the message was sent loud and clear. I think a suspension or fine would have been more than sufficient but the company made the decision to let him go. Like Finlay said, he was given a lot of power in WWE and with that comes a tremendous responsibility and he paid the price for a spur of the moment call.
