Responding To CM Punk's Promo With Answers, WWE & Impact Wrestling, How Divas Are Hired

Written by Richard Gray on Jun 28, 2011 - 11:57:40 AM

How legitimate is CM Punk's promo?

Obviously this was the most-asked question for today and I can tell you that CM Punk's promo was of the worked-shoot variety. He had a strong promo laced with legitimate claims and it came across very good. We actually received so much traffic at the conclusion of WWE Raw the site went down and that's something that usually only happens at the peak of WWE pay-per-views. The second most-asked question was did Punk go too far? That's a much harder question to answer because there were things he said that even caused my jaw to drop and given the way WWE is working the angle, we may never know. However, WWE took the restrictions off CM Punk and he hit a grand slam. The most successful characters are birthed when a worker can be who they are in real life (just turned up a notch) and do not have to worry about being tied down to a guideline. This is how the most popular gimmicks get started. Steve Austin made a great point last night on Twitter as he also pointed to Mark Henry. When is the last time Mark Henry has done anything as interesting as he did last night? Sometimes I feel if the creative team would "manage real-life gimmicks" rather than try and create their own gimmicks; we would have much more entertaining programming.

With CM Punk's contract apparently ending July 18, will he still have the 90-day no compete clause or would he be free to show up at the next Impact Wrestling tapings if he chose?

I am sure CM Punk has a 90-day non-compete clause attached to his expiring WWE contract. However, I wrote on my Twitter account last night that the current angle shows that WWE does not think much of Impact Wrestling because they are promoting Punk's expiring deal. Punk could re-sign with WWE at any moment but theoretically if he doesn't re-sign and walk, he could go to Impact Wrestling in 90 days. From what I have heard Punk has no interest in Impact Wrestling but anything is possible in this business.

What does WWE look for in Divas other than skills inside the ring?

WWE cares more about looks in hiring Divas than anything else. They find attractive women and make them wrestlers, not the other way around. Even Kharma was signed because of her look, which WWE feels is very marketable, and not as much about her superior in-ring abilities.
