Sheamus, Dark Matches, Shelton, Harts, Swagger/Bourne
Written by Richard Gray on Jul 1, 2009 - 1:13:44 PM
My question is about Sheamus, I thought he looked great last night and in my opinion he has a very bright future in the WWE. What are your thoughts on him?
I'm a fan of the Irishmen gimmick and think Sheamus has all the talent in the world to become a main event caliber superstar. I like how WWE is utilizing ECW as a place to bring him up and get him over with the television audience before moving him to Raw or SmackDown. Sheamus is a talented in-ring worker although you couldn't tell much given his squash last night. Another interesting fact about Sheamus is he wears SPF 80 sunscreen to keep his skin as white as possible. That is dedication.
I understand why WWE does dark matches prior to shows, as it helps to warm the crowd up before they go live. But why do they do dark main events, after the shows are already over?
WWE does dark match main events to give the live audience a bonus for attending the show. The company often uses these matches to give workers who are in main event programs a little more practice without the match being filmed on TV. The biggest difference between a dark match and a match that is aired on TV or PPV is a worker can afford to mess up when the cameras aren't on, but only gets one chance when the cameras are shooting.
Why was Shelton Benjamin moved to ECW? I thought that he was one of the top workers on SmackDown.
Apparently WWE wants to use Shelton Benjamin to help develop the younger call-ups from Florida Championship Wrestling. I don't agree with it as I feel Shelton is one of the most talented in-ring workers in the company. I have more details available on the moves to ECW in a Premium update available at this link.
Now that they have been moved to SmackDown, do you see The Hart Dynasty starting a Canadian faction with Chris Jericho and Edge?
Anything is possible but the word I got on Edge and Chris Jericho is they are going to be floating heels for the foreseeable future. I think The Hart Dynasty was moved to SmackDown to see how they do on one of the major brands. If they get over, the sky is the limit for them. If not, I'm afraid they'll be buried. I've been a fan of the work of The Hart Dynasty so far, so let's hope it works out.
Do you feel that Jack Swagger and Evan Bourne's move to Raw is too soon?
No, I do not. Both Jack Swagger and Evan Bourne are extraordinary talents and have proved they can work quality matches. While it's unlikely either will be main eventing immediately, it gives them a chance to get exposure on WWE's most-watched program.
