Taker's Title, ECW's Future, WWE Divas, Hardy's Return

Written by Richard Gray on Apr 21, 2008 - 10:35:47 AM

Last year the Undertaker was supposed to hold the World Heavyweight Championship for a very long time but those plans were scrapped due to his arm injury. My question is now that he's champion again, how long do you see The Undertaker holding the World Heavyweight Championship this time around providing that he stays healthy?

From what I understand the Undertaker's current run is the run that he was supposed to get last year meaning that this current run will be an extended one. The Undertaker is 43 years old and many within the company feel like that this could be his final run as World Champion before retiring. Personally I could see Undertaker holding the title all the way up to WrestleMania; however, I am not able to confirm anything at this point.

Do you ever seeing the WWE getting rid of the brand ECW? Not in the sense of dropping the show on Sci-Fi but like renaming the show? I think it's silly they call the show ECW?

No, WWE would lose their Sci-Fi deal before they dropped the ECW brand. I wish more people would understand that the ECW brand was never meant to be like the original ECW. Vince McMahon attached the name on the brand because he wanted a third brand and knew by calling it ECW that fans would know what he was talking about. The company had some very successful ECW One Night Stand pay-per-views so McMahon capitalized on the popularity of the name to launch another brand. With the One Night Stand pay-per-views being similar to the original ECW, everyone thought that the brand was going to resurrect the hardcore action of the old ECW. While many feel like that idea would have worked, Vince McMahon had his own vision of what he wanted his third brand to be. He did not want his new brand to be like the old promotion that so many loved but wanted it to be a WWE brand with a name that wrestling fans already recognized. As of today, the ONLY thing that the ECW brand has in common with the original ECW promotion is the name.

Hey Richard. You have said in the past (and I do agree) that at the moment the WWE Divas are about looking good while the TNA Knockouts are about competing in the ring. I just wonder if you think that WWE is trying to push their Divas a little more in this direction, given the matches between Beth & Mickie which looked OK, the fact that Melina can pull off a match and etc. I just feel that, with a little more emphasis on training, some of the other Divas could pull off a good match, and I know that WWE doesn't really consider TNA as competition, but I think it would be good to see WWE taking the hint from TNA on this one.

No I do not feel like WWE is changing the direction of their women's division. The company is doing a Beth/Mickie program on house shows and it will be interesting to see if that carries over to television. The only reason why the company did a title change last Monday on Raw was because of an overseas incident that happened involving Beth; it was not because WWE all-of-the-sudden wanted the Women's title to have value. Like McMahon's vision with ECW, he has his own plan of what he wants his Divas to be and that is sex appeal. McMahon has never been one to push serious women's wrestling and I don't think he ever will be. A lot of hardcore wrestling fans are going to criticize that, however, I truly believe that McMahon is focused on offering something for everyone. WWE is a mainstream promotion that is focused on appealing to the masses. In order to appeal to the masses you have to have storylines and characters that appeal to every aspect of your fan base.

When is Jeff Hardy coming back to WWE and what does the company have planned for him?

Jeff Hardy should be back to WWE sometime next month. Upcoming house show cards have him in singles matches against Lance Cade. All indications are that he will not return as a main event caliber superstar like he was when he left but he will be an upper mid-card worker. If you are Premium Member you can read my detailed report on Hardy's return at this link.
