Title Changes, Short Reigns, Hardy, Punk, Cena/Show
Written by Richard Gray on Jun 8, 2009 - 10:30:41 AM
Why did WWE decide to change four of their titles at Extreme Rules last night?
I can't give you an exact answer behind the thinking of WWE creative. However, the title changes were done to keep people surprised. Extreme Rules was considered by many to be a throwaway gimmick show so creative made it newsworthy. There's been talk of Rey Mysterio dropping the Intercontinental Championship to Chris Jericho since they started their program. Tommy Dreamer might be signing a new WWE contract as the company made his goal a reality when they booked him over Christian and Swagger. The World Heavyweight Championship changing two times was a creative swerve to get the belt back on CM Punk. The only change that surprised me was the WWE Championship with Batista going over and being injured. For those that missed it we have exclusive news on the injury of Batista available at this link.
I'm sure after Extreme Rules you'll be flooded with emails about title changes and how quick they have come, my question is directed more at the value of the title, I feel that with as many title changes as we have had the pursuit of it is not as intense or anticipated any more. When Cena had the belt for a long time fans could NOT WAIT until he lost. What are your thoughts?
I like longer title reigns as I feel they give the belts more prestige. WWE seems to think differently as they have changed their belts quite often recently. The one good thing is it keeps people guessing and gives the illusion anything can happen. I like what Mick Foley said Thursday on Impact - it's a world championship not a menstrual cycle.
Hi Richard I was at the Extreme Rules PPV last night and the ending really disappointed me. I am a huge Jeff Hardy fan and to have him finally win a world title again and lose it that fast was crazy, but left me with a question that I hope you can answer since they had him win only to job to CM Punk does this mean that he hasn't signed a new WWE contract.
Jeff Hardy has not signed a new WWE contract and might be leaving the company after the summer. That could change at any time but going into this past weekend; I was not working under a new deal as originally thought.
My question has to do with last night's "Extreme Rules" pay-per-view. I just don't understand it - why was Jeff Hardy given a push to finally win the World Heavyweight Championship, only for WWE to allow CM Punk to practically steal it from him? To me, that should only have happened if Edge was to retain the title. To me, that one move completely ruined a perfectly decent pay-per-view.
WWE creative pulled the swerve as a major surprise. It was inevitable CM Punk was going to cash his shot in and win the title; it all just depended on when. Now Punk will have another title reign going into the summer like last summer. I'll be interested to see if Punk is pushed a babyface or a heel based on what happened last night.
My question is do you think Big Show losing to Cena again undermines Show's size and strength?
I hated the way that match was booked. Big Show dominated Cena yet he overcame the odds again and made him tap. That was unrealistic to me and absolutely the wrong call from creative.
