TNA Ratings, WWE Travel, Daniel Bryan, HHH vs. Sheamus

Written by Richard Gray on Mar 17, 2010 - 11:36:34 AM

Should TNA be worried about their 0.8 rating, even when Stone Cold Steve Austin was guest host of Raw this week?

My email box has been flooded with TNA supporters defending the abysmal 0.8 cable rating Impact did on Monday. I know there is a transition period; I know TNA has to "walk" before they "can run". However, we are talking about TNA posting their lowest cable rating of the year before a pay-per-view. Eric Bischoff and Hulk Hogan came in and said it was absolutely essential to get on Monday nights head-to-head with Vince McMahon to be competitive. They claimed it would grow their audience. In two weeks, not only has their audience not grown but it's dropped! People that were watching are not watching. So now not only are they not growing but loyal TNA fans are not watching. That's a big problem regardless of how you spin it. I want TNA to do well. Competition is a great thing for the industry and a great thing for this website. TNA is not getting it done and while it's early there is reason for concern. People that say "it's Wrestlemania time" or "how do you expect them to compete against Bret Hart and Steve Austin" are creating false arguments. Think Wrestlemania time is tough? Try factoring in Monday Night Football which blows Raw out of the water each and every week. TNA Wrestling did a 1.5 cable rating against the return of Bret Hart on January 4th. Remember that show featured Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels in the ring burying the hatchet in the most-public storyline gone wrong ever in the Montreal Screwjob. TNA should have at least ran in the 8-10 PM timeslot as their 8:00 hour on January 4th was the highest rated hour of the show. It gives them an hour without competition and a chance to hook the audience. They have no shot airing a taped show against a live WWE broadcast head-to-head. Furthermore their product is inferior and it doesn't matter who they bring in or how many anti-PG segments they shoot. They have to create a product that people are interested in before they are going to make anyone at Titan Towers nervous.

I was just wondering how the WWE roster gets to various cities. Is it by a tour bus or by private planes?

WWE workers have to fly commercial. It is not only their responsibility to get to city to city but they have to pay for it as the company does not cover travel expenses. WWE has an in-house travel agency where they are able to book flights, hotels and rent-a-cars at better rates than the average person but they do not travel together like professional sports teams. Vince McMahon has a private jet he uses along with top company executives, Stephanie McMahon and Triple H.

I think talent-wise Daniel Bryan is head-and-shoulders above the rest on WWE NXT, having watched him in ROH, yet it seems they are trying to "bury" him. Do you know why, and how is relationship is with the other superstars backstage?

It seems like Daniel Bryan is receiving "the Christian treatment". Pairing him with The Miz (who is much less-experienced than Bryan) was on purpose and it seems like the storyline has followed suit. Vince McMahon wants to prove that no one is a big deal until they are a big deal in WWE no matter how much success they've had elsewhere.

Do you feel like the angle between Triple H and Sheamus feels a little rushed, it feels like WWE have just put this match together because they had nothing else for Triple H and Sheamus at this time.

While the program may seem rushed, Triple H vs. Sheamus has been in the Wrestlemania plans for as long (if not longer) than all the other programs. The match was originally scheduled to involve the WWE Championship but WWE swerved and put the title in Batista vs. John Cena. Hunter is the reason for the monster push of Sheamus so it's only fitting they face off at Wrestlemania.
