Trouble For ROH?, Washington, Orton, New WWE PPVs

Written by Richard Gray on Sep 10, 2009 - 11:15:59 AM

With WWE signing (and thankfully pushing) talent like Sydal (Bourne) and Punk, and recently Danielson and McGuiness I have heard people refer to this as "The Death of ROH". While I do not agree with this, what are your thoughts?

I've talked about this before and I don't think this is the beginning of the end for Ring of Honor. It is going to be hard to replace these top workers but ROH officials understand they are overmatched when it comes to retaining talent. WWE and TNA (to a much lesser degree) are the "major leagues" and have deeper pockets than Ring of Honor. This is why ROH pushes their workers different. Every worker is billed as a big deal superstar, with little distinction between undercard and main event talent. This is done so when one worker leaves, another is ready to step up and take their spot. These aren't the first big losses ROH has suffered and they won't be the last. Ring of Honor will continue on because of the way they push their talent. If anything, the signings help their reputation for taking workers from the independent scene and turning them into superstars. Speaking of Nigel, I spoke to him after he was signed and he is very excited about the opportunity that awaits.

What is the background on Abraham Washington? Is he a wrestler or just on on-screen character?

Abraham Washington is both, however, the reason WWE officials called him up from Florida Championship Wrestling is because of how over he was on the mic. Officials raved about him week after week while in FCW which is why he was given a spot on ECW. He's received mixed reviews from fans since his call-up although I personally feel he hasn't reached his full potential.

Will Randy Orton become a face in WWE anytime soon?

I doubt it and I think it would be a tremendous mistake to try and turn Randy Orton babyface. Orton is one of the most over heels in the business and has carried Raw for the past several months. My guess is it will be Ted DiBiase that will turn babyface but I think they'll turn DiBiase or Rhodes or both babyface before they touch Orton.

First off, I just want to say that I just got Premium, and it's worth every penny. Any, we all know WWE is changing the names of PPVs lately. First One Night Stand went to Extreme Rules. Then Unforgiven was changed to Breaking Point. Then No Mercy became Hell in a Cell. Finally, they change Armageddon to TLC? Why do they do all of these name changes?

I'm glad you are enjoying your subscription! We really appreciate your support and encourage everyone to become a Premium Member for the ultimate browsing experience. The reason WWE is changing the pay-per-view names is because they are toying with new concepts that might help buyrates. The feeling from the office is there is little distinction between B-level pay-per-views and there is no real incentive in purchasing them. WWE has been surveying fans over the past several months seeing which concepts they are high up on. They are taking the data and making it a reality by making the appropriate changes. With the tough economy I think it is a good move to mix things up and offer something different. Some ideas work, some may not but it doesn't hurt to try.
