Truth Smokes, PPV Buys, Pro Wrestling/Lucha Libre, Wolfe

Why did WWE let R-Truth light up and smoke a cigarette on camera?

I am surprised at how many readers are shocked that R-Truth lit up a cigarette and smoked it on camera at yesterday's WWE Raw taping. People have emailed in outraged about it and clearly pointed out it is illegal to smoke inside a public place in London, England. I'm sure Truth cleared the spot with WWE (although I don't know if they cleared it with local event staff) but it was done to turn him heel. WWE has considered turning R-Truth heel for months now, with there being ideas pitched since at least November that I know of. The company even changed his entrance music at one point to dim the babyface "what's up" chants. As for my thoughts on last night's segment I've noticed readers either loved it or hated it. I thought it went over well and hope Truth finds a spot as a heel in WWE be it on Raw or Smackdown.

How many buys do TNA pay-per-views buy? Do they make a profit?

When TNA was considering stopping pay-per-views and airing three-hour live specials on Spike TV they were drawing less than 10,000 buys per show. This is a tremendous loss and makes it impossible to make money. Buy rates climbed up following the Hardcore Justice show they did last August so it was determined to continue to run on pay-per-view. TNA is not a public company so they do not release their buy rate numbers so it is impossible for me to give you exact numbers as they are kept secret. However, we can look at some of the percentages for conversions and I'll give you some numbers to think about. A well-watched edition of WWE Raw does an average audience of around 5,000,000 viewers. A well-watched edition of Smackdown does close to an average audience of 3,000,000 viewers (last week's Smackdown featuring the send-off for Edge did an average viewing audience of 2,982,000, a very strong number). The average pay-per-view buy rate for the three WWE pay-per-views in quarter four of 2010 did 197,000 buys (click here for the breakdown of numbers). Last week's TNA Impact did an average viewing audience of 1,540,000 viewers. There are several variables to factor in when considering how well a pay-per-view does but hopefully those figures will give you an idea. It should be noted that Wrestlemania is a different animal as WWE's goal is to do at least 1 million buys each year for their biggest show of the year but it's a mark they've missed over the past few years. The numbers for this year's Wrestlemania XXVII are not yet available.

A lot has been said about WWE newcomer Sin Cara adapting to the WWE style of wrestling. To us novice fans out there, what are some of the major difference between the WWE style and the style used in Mexico?

Professional wrestling in America compared to professional wrestling in Mexico (known as Lucha Libre) is very different. In America, workers are traditionally taught to work the left side of their opponent's body while in Mexico they are taught to traditionally work the right side of the body so the styles are essentially complete opposites. While the style in America relies on power and flare, Luchadores are traditionally more agile and work more high-risk spots. The Lucha Libre style was introduced to the mainstream in WCW when Eric Bischoff brought guys in such as Psicosis to open shows. However, critics will say a lot of the Luchador work in WCW was watered down to what it is in Mexico. The father of Alberto Del Rio, Dos Caras, is known as one of the greatest submission Luchadors of all-time. Del Rio has a long way to go before he's in that breath but you can see some of that Lucha Libre submission style in his work.

Any new news on Desmond Wolfe?

Things have been very quiet regarding the status of Desmond Wolfe. Rumors continue to circulate but he isn't telling anyone what's wrong with him. As I reported numerous times here on WrestlingNewsWorld.com, his issues are said to be career-threatening.
