Taker/Retirement, WWE Pay Over TNA, Contracts, Williams

Written by Richard Gray on Mar 6, 2009 - 12:07:02 PM

My question involves the Undertaker. My wife and I are huge fans, but we're worried about his possible retirement. Have you heard any whispers about Taker hanging it up? It seems HBK is quite adept at giving wrestlers a fantastic sendoff at WrestleMania (Ric Flair). Any insights?

We've actually had this question a lot and I can tell you I have heard nothing. While this is speculation and nothing I have heard, I would imagine WWE will give The Undertaker a sendoff much like they did for Ric Flair. What I mean by that is a Hall of Fame induction the night prior to his final match at WrestleMania (speculating that he hangs it up after a future WrestleMania which in my opinion would be the best way to do it). However, as far as I know, The Undertaker plans to continue on working.

I've read a lot of things as to why TNA wrestlers would prefer WWE and one reason commonly used is the pay. How much more does WWE pay then TNA?

WWE is a much bigger, more profitable company; therefore they are able to pay their workers more. I do not have the comparable show figure payouts but workers get their downside, bonuses for appearances, bonuses for TV, bonuses for PPV, and bonuses for merchandise. While TNA could technically match WWE in their downsides, the bonuses from WWE are going to be more because more fans attend WWE events and WWE sells much more merchandise. Workers get cuts from everything which is why WWE is a more attractive option from a financial standpoint for most people.

When the WWE fires a superstar with time left on his contract, do they get paid for the balance of his contract?

No, but this is a good question. Downside guarantees are paid out on a weekly percentage, not in a guaranteed lump sum. If a worker has a $60,000 downside, the money is broken down in a weekly percentage and they are paid that no matter if they work or not. This is what allows them to make a living regardless of injury or being a sporadically used enhancement talent. When a worker is released, obviously the payments stop and the termination conditions (such as non-compete clauses) go into effect.

After his departure from TNA, what's the future like to Petey Williams?

Petey is working the indies and as far as I know, plans to continue a career in professional wrestling. A lot of readers are curious if WWE will take a look at him but I haven't heard that yet. We'll see but I think Williams is a talented worker and do not agree with TNA's decision to cut him loose.
