Media Coverage, CM Punk, RVD/Sabu, WWE Title, HBK
Written by Richard Gray on May 7, 2008 - 10:31:48 AM
With more and more media outlets covering everything the WWE does these days, do foresee a future where title changes and matches are covered in the daily sports section like they are in Japan?
I do not see the mainstream media in the United States ever covering professional wrestling like that it is legitimate. The only stories that are covered now by the national media are stories such as suspensions for steroids or tragedies such as what happened with Chris Benoit. Personally I do not think that pro wrestling should be covered by the national media because the outcomes are predetermined. Some regional media outlets cover pro wrestling such as the Baltimore Sun or the Miami Herald but their coverage is on the legitimate aspect of the business and not so much storyline developmental and title changes.
CM Punk has looked very weak since winning the MITB. WWE did not do him any favors when he was part of the ECW roster vs. HHH/Kennedy match, let alone being busted by HHH with a chair. What is your opinion on Punk looking like a jobber?
I am just as confused as you are. They let him go all of the way to the King of the Ring finals (with clean wins from Chris Jericho and Matt Hardy) only for him to job out to Chuck Palumbo on ECW last week. Last night on ECW they made him look legitimate again. Your guess is as good as mine right now but I am confused with the direction of CM Punk.
Why have we not seen either RVD or Sabu in any other wrestling company since leaving WWE? I thought their contracts would have expired by now so they could wrestle again, any information on this?
Sabu has been working the independent circuit since leaving WWE. He has not worked a lot of dates because of an injury but he is scheduled to work later this month in the main event of XPW's "Cold Day In Hell" show on May 24th. As for Rob Van Dam, he has been taking some time off from the business because of burnout and his wife Sonya was recently diagnosed with cancer.
Have you seen the WWE Night of Champions PPV promotional poster? It shows Randy Orton with the WWE Championship on his shoulder. Is this a Judgment Day spoiler?
Yes I have seen the poster and no it is not a Judgment Day spoiler. WWE does the pay-per-view promotional posters several months in advance and since things changes so much, it is hard to get things right. The feeling is that it is better to make a poster with the current champions and change it later than give away a possible result. With that being said, MVP is also featured in the poster wearing the United States Championship belt.
Why is Shawn Michaels faking that knee injury? It's perfectly clear that he's not hurt. If he was, there is no way he could have pulled off Sweet Chin Music on Raw in the win over the ECW tag champs (why The Miz is still under WWE contract is beyond me). So why doesn't he just admit that he's faking it?
It is a storyline! You have to understand that professional wrestling is scripted and everything is preplanned. Michaels is selling the knee as part of his program with Chris Jericho which will build to Judgment Day. I am unsure of the direction they are going to go but I think that this program will end with either Jericho or Michaels turning heel. Also I disagree strongly with your comment about The Miz. The Miz is one of the most improved wrestlers in WWE and has gotten himself over not only with WWE management but the other superstars. The Miz is a great story because he came in, wasn't very good, and worked hard to get to where he is today. You must be watching a different Miz than I am because not only do I think that he looks good in the ring but his mic work has improved significantly.
