WWE's Feelings On Kharma's Pregnancy, PPV Name Changes, Impact Wrestling, Wrestler Salaries

Written by Ryan Gray on Jun 6, 2011 - 11:01:57 AM

Please note: With Richard out of town all this week we'll be running a 'retro edition' of Ask WNW daily. Richard will return with the segment when he's back in the office next week.

How does WWE feel about Kharma leaving WWE TV due to her pregnancy?

It's more or less bad timing on the part of Kharma. She was given build and was getting ready to get "pushed to the moon" and she got pregnant. Given the fact Dawn Marie filed a lawsuit against WWE after she was terminated while pregnant in July 2005; I doubt we'll see Kharma get let go. What is sad to me is I felt Kharma's legitimate promo followed by the work of the Bella Twins on Monday's Raw was the most entertaining thing I have seen from the Divas in months.

Unlike TNA wrestlers who have to get side jobs to make ends meet, do lower-card WWE workers such as JTG make enough money to make ends meet?

It is very difficult to "make ends meet" for some of the lower-card workers and developmental talents in WWE. The downside guarantee to a developmental contract is only $25,000 and while there are show bonuses, it is not easy when workers are required to pay all their own travel expenses. A lot of people think just because someone is on TV or "famous" they are comfortable financially. That is not true in this business as it is not like other professional sports where even the lowest-paid athlete is guaranteed at least a couple hundred thousand dollars a year. One of the reasons the Tough Enough competition is so difficult is they are seeing who has what it takes and who does not. Professional wrestling is a tough business to make it because once you make it to WWE you have to battle to try and get a top spot.

Why does WWE keep changing the names of pay-per-views?

WWE continues to change the names of their B-level pay-per-views to try and make them more attractive to their audience so they do better buyrates. The feeling within the company is that some of the names and concepts had grown stale with their audience so changes are made to "spice" things up. Cynics often say WWE doesn't care what the fans think but several of the concepts have been generated after fans have been surveyed on the Internet.

Is TNA changing the name of Impact to Impact Wrestling because of WWE's abandonment from the term "wrestling" in their rebranding strategy?

Yes, TNA decided to change the name of TNA Impact to Impact Wrestling because WWE is rebranding by moving away from the term "wrestling." While WWE officials maintain they are not changing from their core and are doing it to expand their company-wide focus, TNA is trying to take advantage by collecting frustrated WWE fans. I have heard TNA has even talked about dropping TNA completely and making the entire company known as Impact Wrestling, however, right now they are still TNA Wrestling with their flagship show changed from Impact to Impact Wrestling. If anything else, it has fans talking about their product again but I personally feel there needs to be changes to their internal structure if they are going to compete with WWE.
