WWE vs. WCW, Kozlov Squashes, Kennedy, Papering

Written by Richard Gray on May 27, 2009 - 11:11:00 AM

I was just wondering how life for a WWE superstar now compares to one back when WCW was the opposition in terms of days on the road and performing. The logical answer would seem that with three separate brands, instead of just one company, the wrestlers now travel and perform less than in the past, but can you offer any more specific detail to this?

I don't have the exact figures in comparison to the amount of shows of a particular WWE superstar today compared to a WCW star back in the 90s but I do not believe there is much of a difference. The reason there are three brands in WWE is because there are a lot more workers on the WWE roster than there was in WCW. The brand extension was setup to create internal competition in WWE after the WCW buyout. WWE workers are still on the road as much as WCW workers back in the day. As for differences, the biggest differences are backstage. WWE is much more organized than WCW was and the locker rooms are cleaned up. Alcohol is banned and you'd never see the out of control atmosphere that existed in WCW.

What is the point of WWE having Kozlov destroy jobbers every week on ECW? It doesn't appear to be doing anything for his character and seems like a waste of time.

WWE is doing it to make him appear dominant. This is the same strategy the company used to build Umaga up a couple of years ago. It worked for Umaga as he is now established. There is hope the same can work for Vladimir Kozlov but based on what I've seen, I wouldn't hold my breath.

If WWE wanted to put Kennedy in tag matches to not get him worn down why was he in the match so long?

They wanted to give Kennedy work; however, it takes a lot of pressure off him to be in a tag match rather than a one-on-one singles match. He could always tag out if he needed too. My biggest concern is Kennedy getting shaken up again as he has proved to be a very vulnerable worker.

I was just wondering how exactly does "papering" work? Do they hand out free tickets outside the venue or give them to radio stations and other companies to give out for free?

I heard they were handing out free tickets outside the Staples Center on Monday. Usually whenever papering takes place, they have staffers go out in the streets and get people in the arena. There are always certain tickets set aside for radio station giveaways but papering is usually something that takes place at the last minute because they want to sell as many tickets as possible.
