Big E Langston Working, Lesnar At Rumble?, Secondary Titles, Part-Time Talent vs. New Talent

When will Big E. Langston have a match? The last few weeks he’s been very much in the background of the storyline, when will be his chance to shine?

So far the idea has been to get Big E Langston on television to expose him to the audience. I’ll be honest I haven’t studied his in-ring work and no one really knows what you’re going to get until you put him in a WWE bout. However, we’re told his in-ring work isn’t going to blow anyone away but it’s not bad either. He’ll get his opportunity soon enough but WWE wants to use the current angle to get eyes on him.

Has Brock Lesnar’s name been mentioned with regards to the Royal Rumble? Any other big names floating around?

I have not heard Brock Lesnar’s name for Royal Rumble and would be surprised if they burned through one of his dates considering they already have The Rock confirmed. The show where all the big names are going to be is featured is Wrestlemania 29. The use of Lesnar at Royal Rumble would be somewhat of a waste considering the limited nature of his contract. Surprises are likely for the 30-man Royal Rumble match but none of which are going to surpass the drawing power of The Rock.

With the IC and US titles being meaningless at this point (the titles change hands on non live TV events and haven’t had a decent storyline, champion, or meaningful title defense in a long time) in your opinion would it benefit WWE to just drop one or both all together or drop those titles in favor of a gimmick title(s) like say the Cruiserweight title or create something new?

I would be in favor of eliminating the WWE United States Championship but do not think both secondary titles should be scrapped. I am against introducing any new titles as they have a hard enough time showcasing the belts they currently have, as you mentioned. Title changes on taped shows are actually beneficial for the live audience as they maintain the illusion that “anything can happen.” It would not be wise to change a major title on tape but as long as the titles are being defended, there isn’t a scenario that’s necessarily bad.

What do you take on the veteran talent that WWE chooses to utilize such as The Rock, Mick Foley, Triple H and Brock Lesnar? Yes as long as it is booked well it is a breath of fresh air, but at the same time it takes the opportunities away from the younger/greener talent that are struggling to make a name for themselves. Personally I prefer to see the influx of veteran talent returning because the business at times is very stale and as long as it isn’t booked as bad as TNA used to be booked where the 45-60 year old guys seemed to be always going over the young talent.

My stance is I want to be entertained. Whether that’s with guys like The Rock and Brock Lesnar or The Shield, I want to enjoy what I’m watching. It’s very complicated to book part-time talent because the question is always raised, what are the long-term ramifications of putting one of these guys over one of the up and comers? My hope, which I will discuss in detail in Friday’s Premium Mailbag, is WWE uses the latest run of Rock and Brock to get their audience back and at least one name emerges as a new top talent. WWE cannot keep relying on older talent to bail them out although it’s much easier said than done to create the next Rock or John Cena.

I really think Kofi's run as IC champion really brought back a lot of the prestige that the title used to have.

    • Skyrim

I think you are mistaking Kofi for Cody. Codys reign with the IC title actually had meaning. Kofis was ehhh

Big E should use his five count on shemus, ryback, orton and del rio!

  • Robert

I disagree with the title question antonio cesaro is a awesome wrestler and champion

Brock Lesnar is the most expensive investment that are wasted. All money goes to Lesnar but no impact on the WWE Universe at all. Lots of money spent but lack of time to expose to the audience a lot more. Instead of using the money on Lesnar, they (WWE) should've put their investment in younger talents.

Hahaha now u want seth rollin to sell extreme rules!

  • Jman72485

I don’t think the mid card titles should go away. Just like the WWE and whc belts, it creates more opportunities for the midcard. I mean the Kofi/Miz feud was decent and so was the Cesaro and Truth feud. I like how the IC belt is being used for the more established guys and the US for the younger/ lower card talent (sort of like the European belt). Now if WWE decided to bring back the CW or light heavyweight belt back, I’d be happy….

    *should not*

Titles are as relevant as the wrestlers who wear them. For example, consider how the Intercontinental Championship became so relevant in the 80's. Randy "Macho Man" Savage had such a strong run (not necessarily in duration, but in quality of matches), culminating in his epic match with Ricky Steamboat. Honky Tonk Man was a very compelling heel as everyone awaited a face to beat him. Ultimate Warrior dominated his opponents as IC champ while waiting to take the top spot in the company. Then Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels stepped in. My point is that the WWE can make the U.S. Championship and IC Championship relevant again by building great champions. Barrett and Cesaro are PERFECT starting points. Let them be hated, give them free reign to really build a following (as heels), and then patiently wait for faces who truly have staying power to unseat them (after a lengthy buildup). And if nobody emerges within a year, there's no harm in keeping the straps on Barrett and Cesaro. Richard, it's not the championship belt itself that is faulty, it's the storyline.

    • Kevin

I totally concur, Jeff. WWE creative needs to do with Barrett and Cesaro what they did with all those others you named: let them have a long reign as mid-card champs, then let an up-and-comer unseat them and move them up to top-card status, giving them a run at one of the 2 big championship belts. The up-and-comer rides the midcard belt scene for awhile, then he moves up after being beaten by an up-and-comer. This scenario could continue, with the time frames varying in each case. It would be a good way to build a character one way or the other (either heel or face) until he becomes popular enough to move up to the top of the card.

Dolph Ziggler, A J Lee, Big E reminds me of another trio from back in the day that was pretty darn good. Shawn Micaels,Sensational Sherry, Big Daddy Cool Diesel.

    • Rayner Chee-bai

I think Ezekiel Jackson should take Big E's place as the bodyguard of Ziggler. To me, it seems like Big E is still green as a grass and out of place with Ziggler and AJ. Re-debut Big Zeke as a bodyguard type character and give him a new finisher.

"’ll be honest I haven’t studied his in-ring work "

Richard… dude… why you no watch NXT? (Insert appropriate rageface here)

Just because it doesn't have US TV clearance doesn't mean it's not available to the US wrestling fans. Why Vince hasn't got that yet is beyond me, unless he's holding it back for his *cough*WWE network*cough*.

Seriously, grab it off the inturwebz somewhere. There's plenty of 'free TV' sites that'll have it, or torrent sources, Pirate Bay, whatever, wherever. Source it from behind a proxy service or VPN or something if you need to.
Surely it would only be a benefit in your career to be more familiar with up and coming developmental talent.

      Piracy is a crime.

      • Ken

        And? Your point is?

        • Batman

My point is the last time someone spoke about piracy Richard rightly pointed out you shouldn’t be bragging about breaking the law on his website that tracks IPs.

Pay for your content or don’t watch it. Stop being a self-entitled brat.

Vince isn't holding it back it's on Hulu Plus.

      • Ken

I stand corrected then. I don't live in the US so I don't know anything about Hulu.

  • opie

I was just thinking, doesn’t it seem like a huge waste to have the rock “pass the torch” to john cena at wrestlemania? I mean, wouldn’t that just be entirely symbolic and not really functional? He’s already been the face of the company for years, so wouldn’t it be better for rock to put over someone new?

  • Batman

"I am against introducing any new titles as they have a hard enough time showcasing the belts they currently have, as you mentioned. "

Because there's no point to the US title. It's just another belt for the midcard lot. The IC belt does that job. If you scrapped the US title and replaced it with a Cruiserweight, THAT belt would have purpose. It would give them something to showcase; the cruisers. It would fill a gap that is there, while the US title doesn't.

Does it really matter how good Big E Langston is in the ring? Jack Swagger is a phenomenal wrestler and he gets buried at every opportunity.

  • LeBron James

So they paid Brock 5 Million Dollars to work less then 4 Pay Per Views? (Assuming he works The Royal Rumble). How the hell was that a good investment? Vince got robbed! Horrible business decision.

No time soon on WWE (Raw/Smackdown) TV now that he's NXT Champ. Rollins had to drop the belt to work on the road.

What do you think of the idea of having Rock defend the title at Mania against the winner of the Rumble and then passing the torch, with the winner not being someone like Cena or Orton but rather someone like Daniel Bryan or Ryback or somebody else that really needs the torch passed to them?
