Hey everyone and welcome to this week’s edition of Chris Reviews Smackdown. In this weeks blog I will be discussing the injury to John Cena, Creative Team stupidity, why R-Truth had one of the most memorable debuts in some time and more. Please feel free to leave me some feedback via the comment board or drop me an email to: a_agreement_called_forever@hotmail.com
I think it is such a shame that John Cena has suffered such a severe injury as a herniated disk so soon after coming back from the torn pectoral muscle. Good news for Cena is he should be ready to return in around three months time. People can say what they like about Cena but since winning the Rumble I have been nothing but impressed with the his phenomenal work rate and attitude. During this time he has put on some incredible matches (vs Triple H at Judgement Day & Batista at Summerslam to name two) and as long as he is not dominating the title picture I really enjoy him as a wrestler. I would like to take this opportunity to wish Cena a quick and healthy recovery and look forward to see him returning to our screens as soon as possible hopefully with a modified gimmick as I think that is still what lets him down as he is fed some truly awful lines to say by creative and made to look awful none of which can be attributed to the man himself.
Speaking of creative stupidity Cena’s replacement for Unforgiven is none other than Rey Mysterio. The same Rey Mysterio who supposedly had his body crippled and broken by Kane some weeks ago. Erm ok! Seriously who is booking this angle? They need firing faster than a highlander showing up to a TNA TV taping! This angle with Kane had the potential to be great, I was looking forward to Kane returning to his old masked self and being truly evil again. However this has been truly fouled up but even in my worst nightmares I could not have predicted just how bad this storyline was going to go down. Thank god I don’t write the RAW blog as I would really have NOTHING good to say about this. If Mysterio had been held off until say Cyber Sunday and then come out and attacked Kane during a big match this would have made much more of an impression. People can say well who else could have been put in the match, well you have Kofi, Regal and Santino who all could have made a big statement but no instead we get a storyline that was already ruined being made even worse. Not impressed!
Ok with that little rant over it is on to this weeks Smackdown
We open with The Undertaker making his way to the ring to a huge reaction from the crowd. The Undertaker gets on the mic and actually gives a speech about how he is not the forgiving kind and tells Vickie he is coming for her soul and she will burn in hell. Amazing how someone who barely speaks these days can make such an impact with only a few words. We cut to Vickie locked in her office looking very afraid! I am sensing we are going to be seeing Undertaker vs La Famillia at Unforgiven. Very powerful opening segment and hopefully a sign of a good show.
Next up we get to see an R-Truth vignette as it is the moment we have all been waiting for as R-Truth makes his way to ringside for his Smackdown debut. Rather than facing some random jobber he found himself facing Kenny Dykstra who cut an excellent heel promo about he has been ignored and deserves better which really fires up the live crowd and gets R-Truth mad and he immediately goes on the offense hitting some impressive moves including a unique pin attempt. Dykstra however fights back and shows signs of why he is one of the hottest young prospects in WWE. Incredible corkscrew flying elbow followed by and awesome scissor kick by R-Truth finished off Dykstra and gave him the debut win. So good to see someone debut and immediately face someone that means something rather than local jobbers. This wasn’t the most amazing match ever but Truth certainly made an Impact! (see what I did there) And I look forward to seeing him again next week.
We get to see a very badly acted backstage segment between Michelle and Maryse next talking about the Diva championship. Spot on from Michelle when she said Maryse had no talent though! Michelle was teaming with Maria to face Maryse and Natalya. There is no way that Maryse should be pushed over Natalya! That is just insulting! Natalya and Michelle showed exactly why they should still be feuding over the belt as this match began with Michelle hitting a powerful Russian leg sweep. The match took a turn for the worse as Maria ended up in the ring with Maryse who hit a lame DDT for the finish. After the match a fight ensued between Maryse and Michelle with Natalya helping Maryse to beat Michelle down. So I guess it is on for the divas championship between Maryse and Michelle then, that has bathroom break written all over it! I thought after last week Maria was feuding with Maryse. Oh well more creative stupidity.
Next up we see the best WWE promo video I have ever seen giving us the history of Jeff and MVP’s rivalry. The match between the two tonight should be something special. Jeff cut a pretty intense promo backstage with Eve as we head to ringside for what could well be the best TV match this year. Jeff comes out to an enormous pop as always and MVP was drawing some major heat form the live crowd. This feud has really helped bring MVP back to his heel roots as prior to this he had certainly become something more of a tweener character. Jeff has the advantage early on with MVP doing his usual time wasting much to the crowds disgust. Jeff hit some solid arm drag take overs using MVP’s technical style against him focussing on MVP’s arm and sending him into the ring post. MVP once again tried to take a time out but Jeff hit an incredible dive taking MVP to the floor. This was certainly a different more aggressive Jeff as we return from commercial as MVP knocked Hardy into the turn buckle and then hit some brutal moves including a nasty looking kick to the head which sent Hardy flying from the ring. MVP locked in a solid abdominal stretch which Hardy somehow managed to counter into a unique drop. Hardy hit his leg drop in the corner followed by an impressive face buster. Jeff went for the Swanton but MVP was able to get his knees up to counter. Awesome match! MVP then went to work on Jeff hitting some incredibly powerful kicks which Jeff sold so well. These two seem made to work with each other. MVP tried to mock Jeff and then locked in the camel clutch. Jeff always impresses me but MVP similar to Shelton Benjamin really has stepped up his game in recent months and is ready to take his career to the next level. So many near falls for MVP but Hardy always was able to kick out as the crowd were transfixed. Great suplex form MVP but it still wasn’t enough! As Hardy charged forward MVP countered into a powerful slam but Hardy once again fought back and went for a Whisper in The Wind but MVP used his speed to drop Jeff to the mat in a very nasty bump with Jeff landing on his neck. MVP went for a suplex from the top rope but somehow Jeff was able to turn in mid air and bring his weight down on MVP in one of the most unique moves I have ever seen. Jeff finally connected with the Whisper in The Wind followed by The Swanton for the pinfall and victory. Wow what a match! This was just as good as their Summerslam match if not better! I was gripped from start to finish as were the live crowd. After the match Shelton Benjamin hit the ring and laid out both wrestlers with his Paydirt finisher showing that there are no allies when championship gold is concerned. I am enjoying how Shelton is being built as such a big deal and this push is long overdue!
Whilst it is very unlikely we will see anything better than the previous match all night the show must go on and next up we had Jesse and Festus in tag team action against Hawkins and Ryder. As the bell rang Festus destroyed the former Edgeheads but out came Big Show who proceeded to destroy everyone other than Festus who has returned to his placid state on the outside of the ring thanks to the disqualification bell. Big Show cut a promo after the match warning Vickie never to overlook him again and this was just an oversight. It sucks to be Vickie right now! With two of the biggest guys in WWE gunning for her!
Next up we had another divas match with the lovely Victoria taking on the debuting Brie Bella. I have heard very positive things about this diva in FCW and was hoping she would not disappoint. Brie certainly did enough to dhow early in this match that she is certainly a serious wrestler. The crowd were dead but it did not stop from Victoria showing why she deserves far more than what she is currently getting hitting a beautiful standing moonsault. For some reason Brie tried to crawl under the ring and then was thrown back in the ring by Victoria who went for the set up to the Widows Peak only to be caught in a roll up by Brie for her debut victory. This was good to see some proper wrestling from a debuting diva and I will be looking forward to seeing her again over the coming weeks. I wonder when her sister will be called up?
Next up we see ‘the’ Brian Kendrick cutting an awesome backstage promo telling everyone how he doesn’t feel the need to fight amongst other competitors, instead he chooses to read the Art Of War. This guy is awesome and I really hope he brings his A Game to Unforgiven!
It is champion vs champion next as Triple H was taking on Shelton Benjamin. This should be a very solid match. Shelton came out very cocky but Triple H did not look impressed. Shelton hit some big arm drags grounding the Game early on. Shelton showed plenty of confidence trying to focus to Triple H’s arm who did not exactly do a good job selling this as the match continued. Triple H took control of the match focussing on Shelton’s arm but Shelton battled back but found himself dropped by a DDT. Shelton was able to drive Triple H into the corner and hit a flurry of aggressive strikes but then caught in a phenomenal counter as Triple H went for the pedigree only for Shelton to escape MVP style for a time out. As we return from commercial Shelton truly had the advantage hitting an awesome neck breaker as Triple H made his way back into the ring. A phenomenal show strength from Shelton locking in a brutal neck vice on the Game. Shelton was then able to lock in a finger four leg lock around the neck of Triple H who was somehow able to counter into a pin attempt. Amazing counter from Shelton as Triple H went for a suplex only for Shelton to land on his feet and execute a perfect neck breaker. This was great from Shelton and I believe truly shows he is ready for the next level in his career. Anyone who can wrestle toe to toe with Triple H and look good is something special. Shelton was driving Triple H into the turn buckle but the Game was able to evade the next charge and both men ended up on the mat. Benjamin attempted to leap over Triple H shortly after this only to have it caught and turned into a running power slam! What a match! BIG kick from Shelton dropping Triple H but somehow the Game kicked out, this was followed by a big spine buster from Triple H but Benjamin was able to counter the pedigree into a back breaker. For some reason The Great Khali appeared at the ramp but rather than being distracted by Khali, Triple H was able to counter the Pay Dirt into the Pedigree for the victory. Bizarre finish as the Khali interference would have been the perfect time for Shelton to pick up a shock win. Khali then got in the ring and delivered a Khali Bomb. I think someone needs to remind him that he is not in the Championship Scramble at Unforgiven! At least we didn’t have to see him wrestle this week!
As the show goes off the air we see Vickie still shaking in her office and the lights go out and she starts screaming. Ominous…
This was a good edition of Smackdown that built Unforgiven very effectively. We saw two good debuts from Brie and R-Truth and other than the divas tag match there was no part of the show that I did not enjoy. I think Big Show is going to have a major role to play in whatever happens with Vickie and The Undertaker over the coming weeks and that should be good to see as those two work very well together. Pity he had to bury the tag division in the process but that is something I am unfortunately used to seeing in WWE programming these days. We had to outstanding matches tonight with Triple H vs Shelton and Jeff vs MVP. I would have really liked to see Shelton pick up a shock win but I guess Triple H needed to be looking strong heading into Unforgiven. Jeff vs MVP was match of the night hands down. A truly awesome wrestling encounter between the two brightest stars of Smackdown.
This weeks Smackdown scores an excellent: 9/10
That is all for this week. I will be looking for this strong run of programming to continue as we continue to head towards Unforgiven. With so many injuries to some big names on Smackdown it has really given guys like MVP, Shelton and to an extent Kenny Dykstra the opportunity to step up and all I can say is it is a great thing to be a Smackdown viewer right now. cool, i’m first. I loved Smackdown this week. The show was very well down with the exception of the Victoria/Brie Bella match. My Lord, the arena was dead as hell for that match. I loved how they gave a lot of time to Hardy/MVP and HHH/Shelton. I also love how Shelton loss but still looked strong after knocking out Trips.
Guess we’re not rid of Khali yet. That sucks. And we didn’t get our The Brian Kendrick fix this week :-(. Great show. And wow, Vickie can be the next Jamie Lee Curtis. What a friggin’ scream to end the show.
August 30th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
oh i forgot to mention how I enjoyed R-Truth’s redebut with the E. I was so ready to see him face some random dude from FCW but out comes Kenny Dykstra who got some good heat from the crowd for his mic work. As I said last week, I knew something was in the works for Kenny and he’s playing a heel upset about lack of respect. Wonderful.
August 30th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Actually, Nicole Bella has been called up, too. When Brie went under the ring, she switched places with Nicole. It was Nicole who pinned Victoria. It you pay close attention, you’ll notice that Brie was wearing a belt, and Nicole wasn’t.
August 30th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
i kinda figured that Chris. good catch. guess their doing that Basham Bros stuff where they would switch under the ring. Not really face-type material if this seems to be the case.
Just want to clarify the not getting the Brian Kendrick fix this week. Guess I was in the bathroom and missed the backstage segment.

I really enjoyed most of SD especially the MVP and Jeff Hardy match…when Jeff took that nasty fall it made my stomach turn. Everthing just seems to make sense on this show unlike Raw.
August 30th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
ECW and Smackdown are really showing Raw up. The supposed B & C shows were outstanding and beat Raw by a mile and a half. Hardy and MVP was just fantastic. The Brian Kendrick’s promo was great. He’s reading Art of War while Eziekiel is reading Hop on Pop. R-Truth was overflowing with charisma but he sold way too much for someone making their debut. Benjamin showed that he has what it takes to play with the big boys in the main event. I either expect Big Show to turn heel and help VIckie with Taker or they reunite as a tag team to take on La Familia.
August 30th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
I dont know if you know but I read that the RTruth match was heavily edited 3 minutes worth I guess it was pretty bad.
August 30th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Damn fine show this. I already wrote a blog somewhere else, so I’m not gonna bother to make a long comment.
Pretty good blog too, long and descriptive. I like that. By the way, you got something wrong - Cena fought Triple H at Night of Champions, not Judgment Day.
And hbk, go throw yourself on a landmine.
August 31st, 2008 at 5:06 am
hbk, you need to change your name to y2j, because you sound like a complete assclown right now. I’m not bagging on you calling the blog 5/5, because it was. I’m bagging on you for calling what was, once again, the show of the week a 2/5. You probably think the ladder match for SoCal Val is genius.
Chris, if Nicole and Brie are that good(I didn’t actually get to see it this week. Stupid DVR.), I would’ve loved to see a Divas tag feud between them and Victoria and Natalya.
August 31st, 2008 at 5:36 am
How good was Shelton Vs Triple H? I think that it has to be part of your top ten. It was definately one of the best TV matches of the year.
Great Blog Chris. I like how you are the play by play man, the color annalist and you give your opinions as well.
The Undertaker’s promo was legendary. The more promo’s I hear from Taker the better.
R-Truth was good, didn’t hear much of the crowd though. As everyone has pointed out, it was nice to see a debuting superstar wrestle an actual wrestler rather than a local jobber. I didn’t like how he used his TNA theme, I thought Jim Johnston would have written him something special.
How much fun has Big Show been having since his return. His smile gets bigger every week. Sad to see him bury the tag team division but it was entertaining seeing him do it. I liked how Festus “got thrown out of the ring”, thus keeping his credibility. The promo Big Show gave afterwards was fantastic. Finally creative are giving him something after all this time.
Jeff Vs MVP was excellent. After the match finished I got the feeling that this wasn’t a blow off match. I liked how Shelton made both Superstars pay dirt.
Why the hell is Maryse being pushed over Nattie Neidhart??????????????????
Kendrick’s promo was classic Jake Roberts. He didn’t have to raise his voice once, and yet everyone heard him loud and clear. (If you get what I’m saying).
I’m liking the switch between Nicole an Brie.
I didn’t notice it so thanks for pointing it out Chris.
The main event was classic. Shelton couldn’t have looked more credible. The slow paced action made me feel like I was watching something meaningful. I cannot praise this match enough. Suprisingly I’m actually liking how they are inserting Khali into the title picture. I could live with how they did it this week.
Where was Kozlov??
Tazz needs to work on his story telling rather than his wrestling knowledge in my opinion.
August 31st, 2008 at 8:42 am
Anthony’s blog is good. All four here pretty much are.
Smackdown’s show this week was actually pretty good, and probably the best of the week. Everyone here was made to look pretty good, but I disagree with the praise for what creative is doing with Big Show. I remember him first being in WWF and being built to a monster heel and since then I can’t say he has progressed storyline-wise rather regressed. I prefer the whole big nasty bastard shctick to him effectively killing the tag division. They need to get him doing something bigger in upper midcard rather than just wandering around destroying other mid-carders.
Even the diva’s matches were bearable this week even if Maryse’s promo wasn’t. I mean seriously. What the fuck was that? Looks like she doesn’t just botch all her ring work.
And it’s a shame they didn’t gve Kenny Dykstra and K-Kwik (i’ll always call him that regardless of whatever gimmick they give him, just for my own personal lulz) longer. They looked good even if they weren’t looking so compatible as opponents.
But yeah scramble wise the matches were awesome. Given the right time, appropriate pacing and despite both having clean finishes everyone looked strong. Very impressed by that build. Kendrick’s promo was very very good too. A very interesting character they’re building, I definitely prefered that promo to his in-ring ones before matches.
I enjoyed SD this week, nice show.
August 31st, 2008 at 11:10 am
Did I miss something about Maryse’s promo that made it SO bad? That’s pretty much how she always talks. Smug as can be and kind of hard to understand with the heavy French accent.
She’s not out of this world on promos, but you can practically hear the conceit in her every word. She’s a solid heel.
Plus, I’m guessing they want Michelle to have some successful defenses before she loses the title (likely to Natalya).
August 31st, 2008 at 1:54 pm
So nice to be on a blog where there’s no drama. Whoever was the one who pointed out the belt thing with the twins was right. And Ziek was actually reading Cat in the Hat
August 31st, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Well I only caught some of the show but it sounds like it was good.
August 31st, 2008 at 4:05 pm
I thought SmackDown was great this week. Raw was definitely the worse show of the week. Every match was good even the divas matches weren’t as mmuch of a snorefest this week. Jeff Hardy and MVP put on a PHENOMINAL match,Jeff’s flip off the ring apron was great. Shelton and Triple H put on a great match and it really showed that Shelton Benjamin is headed for big things. The Brian Kendrick’s promo was awesome i kept trying to figure out was Ezekiel reading then i finally saw the Dr.Sesus logo. In the end a great Smackdown this week and a great blog Chris.
August 31st, 2008 at 7:47 pm
I definately agree with you this weeks smackdown was excellent. Jeff Hardy Vs MVP was great and I love the push Shelton Benjamin and Brian….excuse me THE Brian Kendrick are getting and Kendrick is quickly proving that a small guy can definately get over. But one thing i wanted to comment on is the Brie Bella vs Victoria Match I think the reason she went under the ring was to do the old switcharoo with her twin that they love to do with twins
August 31st, 2008 at 8:42 pm
WOW what a great show this week! It really delivered and pretty much every segment was good.
- Takers promo was great. Good to hear from him and know that he is STILL gold on the mic. I’m guessing a handicap match next week with Taker vs the Edgeheads. Great way to start the show.
- R-Truths debut was definetely a great one. Sure glad to see him facing a credible opponent. I have high hopes for this guy. I didn’t know him in TNA but he looks to be a treat to see. And I am really enjoying the whole Dykstra “being a joke and no one taking him seriously” angle. I wonder where this may go. I see a big push for this guy. These 2 had a good match. Overall great segment as well. Nice debut by R-truth!
- Since the crowning of Michelle as Divas champ at NOC I haven’t even been paying attention to whats been happening to the divas. I’m wondering when the next time will be when Michelle actually defends her title ever since she won it let me see…..2 months ago?!? But I will say one thing…whether she sucks in the ring or not Maryse IS HOOOOOOT!!! So yeah I never really watched the Divas segment.
- WOW is all I gotta say. Jeff and MVP put on a great match. Jeffs promo was good too and I am definetely glad that this wasn’t the blowoff match as this is easily one of the best things on SD! right now. This match had quite a few sick spots but the one that made me cringe was his fall from the top rope on his back after the attempt to do the whisper in the wind. I think it was botched seeing as how it was done. Major props to Jeff for taking that bump. MVP is so impressive in the ring and shows that he is a future main eventer. I loved Shelton coming in and making an impact on both of his Championship scramble opponents. This segment flowed so beautifully and also showed that these 3 competitors are a big deal and just made me look even more forward the scramble match at Unforgiven. Great match here and great ending too.
- Where was Kozlov this week??
- Hawkins and Ryder have done nothing since their win. These guys really showed me that the tag division blows big hairy nuts right about now and guess what? I STILL can’t tell these 2 apart. Hell I doubt most of us can. Jesse and Festus are the ones who should have been next in line for the title. Anyway Festus displayed how amazing he is in the ring by destroying the crappy tag team. I just have one problem. How come we rarely see Jesse in the ring? It seems to be all about Festus. Jesse is filled with talent from what I have seen and he should have more time in a match instead of just starting things off imo. Big Shows showed us again why he is so dominant and pretty much destroyed the Edgeheads and poor Jesse. Glad to know that Festus still looked credible at least. Big Show cut a very nice promo about how he was overlooked. I’m wondering if he might reunite with Taker and take on the Edgeheads for the tag titles. Yeah sounds far off seeing as these 2 guys are miles ahead of that but it can still happen you know. I would personally love that and seeing those 2 bring up the dying tag division would certainly be awesome in my honest opinion.
- Unfortunately I missed the new divas debut so no comment on that. I’ll go check it out on youtube =)
- THE Brian Kendrick definetely impressed me with his promo. It was so intense and so good. I never knew this guy had it in him. And just think only a few months ago this dude was getting buried along side poor Paul London on Raw. Now hes one of the fortunate guys headlining a PPV. This guy is certainly a treat to watch and I have just become a fan of his seeing his ring work AND after watching that promo. Good job creative on the way u built this guy. He is becoming into a very big deal and I would love to see this guy feud with Jeff Hardy. What a spectacle that would be! FANTASTIC promo here. And are you guys serious about Ezek reading a Dr Seuss book? Sounds outta place don’t you guys think? (lol)
- The main event kicked as much ass as Jeffs/MVPs match. The ending kinda ruined it for me seeing Khali coming out and burying Trips. I thought this rivalry was over! Shelton Benjamin definetely showed he has what it takes to hang with the big dogs and I am glad the guy is finally getting a push. His mic work seems ok to me too. I hope to God that Khali doesn’t get involved in the championship scramble. That would really blow.
- The ending reminded me of a scary movie. Frikin badass!
SD! is really raping Raw in terms of quality. The draft has definetely done wonders for the show. I wonder when Raw starts getting good again? The buildup for Unforgiven was definetely well done. Can’t wait to see whats happening with Taker/ La Familia next week. Cliffhanger endings ftw!
This show scores a solid 9.2/10 from me. Slightly better than last weeks show imo.
BTW great blog Chris!
September 1st, 2008 at 4:06 am
Can’t the creative come up with a storyline not so plain for the debuting Bella Sisters. Brie officially makes her debut while Nicole hides under the ring and pulls the switch on poor Victoria for the surprise win .
September 1st, 2008 at 7:51 pm
You know that Victoria is gonna be pissed when the twins get caught swapping lol
