Excess – Night of Champions Preview
By Luke Parks on June 28th, 2008

Before I get to my picks and predictions, I would like to give some more of my thoughts on this past Monday’s draft.

Concerning the Draft:
I think some of the smart moves would have to be the resurgence of Smackdown. Every year, Smackdown gets destroyed by the Draft. This year, they got top-notch guys and even the best announcer in the business. I told Richard Gray that JR looked pissed but professional for the rest of RAW. In other words, JR’s a class act and should be commended for how he handled it. While I don’t mind having Michael Cole on RAW, I will miss JR. He can sell just about anything that goes on in the ring. This shakeup will certainly be great for the announce teams. It will undoubtedly take them a few shows to get their chemistry down. I still think it’s kind of bullshitty (is that a word?) that they’re taking the best announcer in the business and putting him on Smackdown, a show that I won’t be able to see in a few months. Shitty. Bullshit. Fucking bullshit. BS.

As far as everything else is concerned, I liked the big moves they made. The main even side of things certainly looks good, even though I wish they had sent John Cena to Smackdown. Certainly with Deuce on one show and Brian Kendrick on another show, that’s two tag teams that have been broken apart. As you all know, I hate random guys in tag teams but I guess that’s what we’ll have for a while unless Cryme Tyme & the Highlanders get a push on RAW. Over on Smackdown, they’ve got Hawkins & Ryder and Jesse & Festus. I guess they’re going to make some new tag teams.

On the mid-card side of things, they made some good moves to give guys a fresh start. On some of these though, like Matt Striker or Chuck Palumbo, if it doesn’t work after a while, they need to cut them loose. You can only repackage a guy so many times. It should be interesting the next few months!

On the Vince McMahon Injury Angle:
After watching that crap on Monday, I got the feeling we were in for another few weeks of “who done it” followed up but a shitty conclusion like last year. I know this is television and this stuff is scripted. However, you blur that line when you give out money, when you interact with fans, etc. I know this isn’t a TNA blog but they had a screw member get killed after falling off of scaffolding after a PPV a few weeks ago. Now, Vince does this shit with him falling off the stage and barely getting a scratch on him? Isn’t that the biggest bullshit you’ve ever heard? A rival company has someone die and you’re going to do a fake angle & try to imitate it. I didn’t exactly feel this way when I saw it Monday night. It took me a little while to get good & pissed off. But this is complete bullshit. Last year’s angle backfired with the stuff with Benoit. This year’s is already backfiring with a rival company’s crew member dying. If something legit happened to Vince, I would be concerned and show sympathy. But every time I get to thinking he’s a decent guy, he pulls this shit. Death is something I don’t like to f*ck with. This isn’t “Rescue Me” (one of my favorite shows) where we know it’s characters and stuff. This is live, humans moving around like their almost-real-selves entertainment. Vince’s “injury” angle is fucking classless, plain & simple. That may be a little over the top but after a while, I get sick of bullshit.

Special Note Concerning RAW is Blogged:
Due to my current job and the amount of time I have each night after RAW, I will start publishing my blog sometime on Tuesday afternoon. I know the quality of blogs has been poor the past few weeks. But, when RAW gets over at 11:05 or so, I sit down to write a blog. When I’m getting up at 6AM the following morning, the last thing I want to do is elaborate on the show. With me rushing, it results in a semi-decent blog. So, from here on out until I return to school in August, I’ll post the blogs on Tuesday afternoons. This way, you guys get my best work possible.

Now after all of that, it’s time once again for another WWE PPV! This time, it’s Night of Champions! This is my type of event where all of the titles are on the line. It’s only 8 matches but it’s still a good idea. They could do this every month with a few more non-title feuds. I really don’t know why they don’t. I’ve also included which brand each guy is on in my header. If two are fighting for a belt and they’re on the same show, I didn’t include it. Without further ado, let’s get to the previews & picks from the writer of RAW is Blogged…..the Straight Edge, Rated R Superstar of The Blog Spot…ME!

World Heavyweight Championship
Smackdown’s Edge © vs. RAW’s Batista
Well, there’s no doubt a championship will change hands at Night of Champions. I’ve heard a few things concerning the Money in the Bank and CM Punk. Whether that’s true, I don’t know. I sure hope the hell it is because I’m ready for a CM Punk heel turn like you wouldn’t believe. Regardless, with Triple H on Smackdown, I don’t think Edge will be the main player anymore. As much as I hate it, Triple H will have stroke. That’s one reason nobody wants him on their brand or they hate working with him. Yeah, he’s good but for the most part, he seems power hungry. On the match side of things, we’ve seen something involving Undertaker, Batista, or Edge for almost two years now. Am I sick of it? Yeah. Has Undertaker-Edge run it’s course? For the most part, up until the banishment angle. However, with Batista heading to RAW, I don’t really think he’s going to win the belt this time. Batista needs a good upper mid-card feud with somebody. Get him out of the title picture for the meantime. Edge via pinfall but ending in a swerve maybe.
My Projected Winner: Edge

WWE Championship
Smackdown’s Triple H © vs. RAW’s John Cena
Well this sucks. Let’s get some stuff out of the way before I go any further. Both the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships will not be on the same show. Somebody’s going to lose. Triple H just got the belt a few months ago but his title run has been lack luster. He doesn’t have the “it” factor like he’s had. Most of you know how I feel about the other guy. I really wish he was the one that was sent to Smackdown instead of Triple H. I get that he draws big money and he’s the face of the company. HOWEVER, I think and Vince knows that they can make a whole lot more money with Cena chasing the title rather than him running everybody over. Then again, didn’t we sit through a year long bore fest with Cena as champion? As I’ve said before, I wouldn’t mind it if the titles changed shows for a while. It’s been what, 3 years since the WWE Championship was on Smackdown? I’m thinking Triple H retains.
My Projected Winner: Triple H

ECW Championship
RAW’s Kane © vs. Smackdown’s The Big Show vs. ECW’s Mark Henry
I guess ECW will now be the Land of the Big Guys instead of the Land of the Misfit Toys. I don’t necessarily mind Kane having the title. I think he deserves something for his years of hard work and putting sub par guys over. I remember when I was little, I was scared shitless of Kane. Now that he’s heading to RAW, he won’t retain his belt. If he does, unless they come up with a good reason to get the ECW belt back on the ECW show, it’s some more bullshit. By a flip of the coin, Mark Henry will win.
My Projected Winner: Spandex King Mark Henry

World Tag Team Championship
Cody Rhodes & Hardcore Holly © vs. Ted DiBiase & ???
It pisses me off more than ever that you can put a guy in an angle, give him a title show, and most likely have him win without him doing anything. I mean, it’s like playing ball and the new kid gets a starting spot but never having practiced. Now, I don’t see the heel turn for Cody Rhodes coming at NOC. I figure that might be the next night on RAW. As far as Ted’s partner, since DH Smith and Carlito got moved to Smackdown, it probably won’t be them. I mean, how do you explain a guy showing up from Smackdown to partner with a RAW guy when they were drafted earlier in the week? My guess is it will be Deuce under a different name. He’s used Jimmy Snuka Jr. as a ring name before. So, I figure he might go with Jim Snuka or Jimmy Snuka Jr. With DiBiase’s promos, his team should win.
My Projected Winner: Ted DiBiase & ???

WWE Tag Team Championship
The Miz & John Morrison © vs. Finlay & Hornswoggle
I’ll keep this short and simple. They’ve shit all over the Cruiserweight Championship last year with Midget Man winning. If these two win the tag belts, I won’t watch Smackdown or ECW ever again. I don’t give a shit who’s on it.
My Projected Winner: The Miz & John Morrison

Intercontinental Championship
Chris Jericho © vs.
Well, I put this one in here thinking we would have a match. I guess we won’t unless it’s inpromtu. So much for Jericho being a fighting champion. But, anytime I’ve played against nobody, I’ve always won. You can write that down and use it later, free of charge.
My Projected Winner: Chris Jericho

United States Championship
Matt Hardy © vs. Chavo Guerrero
With Matt Hardy on ECW now, I have a reason to watch the show, since I’m a Hardy fan. But, with the exit of CM Punk, Shelton Benjamin, & Kofi Kingston, I might not be so keen to tune in now. Where’s Elijah Burke by the way? I don’t see Chavo Guerrero winning the belt. Like I said in my draft preview, I wish they had brought back the Cruiserweight Championship so guys like Chavo could fight for a title that better suited them. Either way, Matt Hardy, Version 1.0 retains.
My Projected Winner: Matt Hardy

Women’s Championship
Mickie James © vs. Katie Lea
This is one of those “wtf” moments. Why Beth Phoenix & Melina are involved in this is beyond me. I get that Katie Lea is an up-and-coming star. Regardless of that, Beth & Melina had something going. It seems silly to take those two out after their match at One Night Stand and plug these two back in it. At Judgment Day, it was a three-way between Beth, Mickie & Melina. Why not include Mickie in One Night Stand? Then, have some interference from Katie Lea. Then at Night of Champions, make it a Fatal 4-Way. Damn, I need a creative job. In any instance, it’s too early for Katie to win.
My Projected Winner: Mickie James

Special Note Concerning RAW is Blogged:
I’m posting this again in case somebody missed it at the beginning. Due to my current job and the amount of time I have each night after RAW, I’m going to start publishing my blog sometime on Tuesday afternoon when I get home. I know the quality of blogs has been poor the past few weeks. But, when RAW gets over at 11:05 or so, I sit down to write a blog. When I’m getting up at 6AM the following morning, the last thing I want to do is elaborate on the show. With me rushing to get it done, posted so I can sleep, all of that results in a semi-decent blog. So, from here on out until I return to school in August, I’ll post the blogs on Tuesday afternoons. This way, I have time to collect my thoughts and you guys get my best work possible. I hope everybody understands this. Just save your comments for Tuesday afternoon. It won’t kill you!
