RAW is Blogged: The Animal Runs the Show
By Luke Parks on June 30th, 2009

Welcome to the longest running blog on the WNW Blog Spot…RAW IS BLOGGED!!!

I promise not to Big Daddy V this blog.

As most of you know, I was not in the Live Blog last night. One of the pains of living in an apartment complex is sometimes the internet just up & goes down for a while. I had everything ready around 6:45 or so and then it started messing up. It didn’t become fully functional until last night around 11:50. Pisses me off. I hope everybody had a fun time during the blog and I’ll be back for “Night of Champions.”

The Bash is in the books and from what I’ve read on the results & commentary, it wasn’t a good show.

Now, before the whine birds start complaining about me running down a show, if you honestly think The Bash was good last night, me & you need to talk so I can show you the difference between a “good” show and a “bad” show.

CM Punk pretty much turned heel last night with his DQ and referee shot. I really hope they let him start his “I’m straight edge and I’m better than you” stuff that he did when he was a heel in ROH. That was some of the best heel work I’ve seen this side of Edge.

Tommy Dreamer surprisingly retained his title. I figured this would be the time they took the title from him.

Rey Mysterio kept his mask in the Match of the Night when he beat Jericho for the title. I thought the double-mask thing was cool.

Michelle McCool and Dolph Ziggler won their respective matches. I don’t think I could handle a Kane-Khali feud though.

Chris Jericho & Edge somehow won the tag titles. I don’t know why they did that but at least it will elevate the titles somewhat. DiBiase ended up walking out on Orton, which is teasing the break up of Legacy. I think that’s complete bullshit.

Legacy hasn’t been together for a while and even the start of the group was shaky. I think we all remember how DiBiase & Rhodes jobbed a few times and had to “fight” their way in. Now that they’re in, they jobbed like crazy. They got built up, at the expense of the Colons, only to lose the tag title match and then tease a break up. It’s like TNA. A tag team gets together and it’s no time before they’re either teasing a break up or they turn on each other.

The 3 Stages of Hell match was rushed mainly because instead of getting straight to the match, they aired one of those long video packages. Now, I don’t mind those whenever there is plenty of time and a match will have time to breath. Orton of course retained and I honestly don’t know where this feud goes from here. You can do Hell in a Cell at Summerslam, as I mentioned in the preview blog, or one of those “Champion Challenge” matches, similar to what they did in 2007. Other than that, the feud is over.

And now that brings me to my last point on the Bash and I know nearly all of you are anxious to hear what I have to say about John Cena-Miz.

I will start off by saying that they had a shot to continue this feud and potentially create a new star in The Miz. With the proper booking, the angle could have continued and Cena could have given Miz the rub that would have put him over as a legitimate star.

But, what did they do?

They buried The Miz. They buried him under a giant pile of bullshit, complete with flies and a neon arrow pointing down with “GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS!” flashing. I mean, The Miz might as well hand in his notice because he’s done. I have not one freaking clue as to why they decided to have John Cena DESTROY the Miz. It’s like the big, bad established team scheduling a cupcake team, then beating the living hell out of them.

Are you kidding me? They are in need to create new stars. Vince wants to create new stars and elevate guys who could potentially bring in revenue. And what do they do with a guy with a bright future? They bury him. They destroy him. They make him into a laughing stock. They make him tap like a “pussy,” as one guy said it.

How hard would it be to give a win to the Miz by a roll up or have him get DQed for using a chair? How fucking hard is that? This is the type of stuff that sends me up the wall and makes Cena look like a super hero, at least to the kids and women who still love him. This is the type of match that happens that drives me AWAY from the product. Hell, Miz has more credibility from doing the Diva Search or beating fake opponents on The Real World than feuding with Cena. Oh yeah, that shitty movie “12 Rounds” comes out tomorrow on DVD & BluRay so get ready for it to be shoved down our throats tonight.

Brand Blog Writers Challenge:
Luke Parks (RAW) – 4-4 at The Bash, 21-27 overall
Paul Smith (ECW) – 5-3 at The Bash, 24-24 overall
Chris Jacks (Smackdown) – 5-3 at The Bash, 23-25 overall

As you can see, the Brits tied each other with me one behind from last night. I think whenever I was going through the results, Chris Jacks started off with no missed picks. I’m still within striking distance. Jacks remains one behind leader Paul Smith. I’m two behind Mr. Jacks and three behind Mr. Smith. Not all is lost, America. Let not your heart be troubled, I will come through!

No, I don’t think “Bruno” nor “Borat” are funny movies whatsoever.

RAW is Blogged:
RAW is LIVE from San Jose, California…home of the NHL regular-season best record, the San Jose Sharks! Somebody ask them their thoughts on Sid the Kid please!

The Skinny:
Instead of creating new stars, they decided to bring in the Spandex King to take down the Mighty Viper.

Opening Segment: Vince McMahon, Batista, Legacy
Vince came out & teased giving the people their money back and a commercial free RAW but said he wouldn’t. He then said that Trump had executed 15 trades between RAW, ECW, and Smackdown. He said that he would keep Trump’s “guest host” thing and that tonight’s guest host, who has the same power as a GM, would be Batista. Batista came out with a big brace on his arm. Besides his crappy promo, he said they’d have a four man tournament to determine Orton’s opponent for Night of Champions. He announced Miz against Cena and MVP against Triple H. It wasn’t long before Legacy came out. Legacy talked and Batista said if they looked at him the wrong way, he would fire all 3 of them. Batista said that RAW had acquired 5 new Superstars but only 3 of them would face Orton.

I’m curious as to why we have these “trades.” Is it because Vince thinks it will “shake things up again?” How about getting some new writers or shaking the writing teams up? I bet that would shake things up. It would definitely cure the shitty storylines. There’s so much inter-brand competition they might as well dissolve the brand extension. I like the brand extension & think it’s the best idea they’ve had. However, if they keep on doing this same crap with guys going to whatever shows and having random trades & drafts, it becomes pointless. Let’s not forget to point out that all of the trades make Tiffany & ECW look like total crap. Now that the Hart Dynasty is on Smackdown, all of my favorite wrestlers are on Smackdown. I hate you Chris Jacks!

Match #1 – Night of Champions Tourney Match: Triple H vs. MVP
Triple H played up his injured leg during this match. MVP got some considerable offense, including a Figure Four and a running kick. Unfortunately, Triple H reverse the Playmaker into a Pedigree to pick up the win. Yeah, MVP may be making an impact with Sherri Shepherd but here in the world of wrestling, he’s not doing too much.
Winner: Triple H

Match #2 – Unified Tag Team Championship: Chris Jericho & Edge © vs. The Colons
Jericho & Edge cut a promo prior to the match. They demonstrated how heels properly cut a promo and gain heat, despite Jericho claiming to not showing up on RAW when he’s been on here the past few weeks. I’ll be glad whenever they change the belts and get a new set. This was a pretty good bout. They did a cool spot where Jericho was going to catapult Carlito into the corner. Instead, Carlito hit Edge in the process, and then hit a springboard on Jericho. Primo distracted Edge, then Carlito hit a Back Stabber on Edge for a near fall. Carlito went for a springboard elbow but Primo hit the ropes, barely, which cause Carlito to screw up. Carlito turned around and got hit by a spear from Edge to give the victory to Edge & Jericho.
Winner: Edge & Chris Jericho

After the match, Carlito & Primo talked and it seemed as if they were teasing a break up.

They put up a factoid about females watching RAW more than some other channels. I had to laugh at that.

Match #3 – Night of Champions Tourney Match: John “Deere” Cena vs. The Miz
It seemed that Miz got in a little more offense than his match last night. There were audible “CENA” and “CENA SUCKS” chants. Miz got a lot of offense in, which shocked me. You would have thought that he would have done that at the PPV instead of on RAW. It wasn’t long before Super Cena made the come back. He hit the 5 Moves of Doom, if you count that crappy leg drop, and won with the STFU.
Winner: John Cena

So next week, it will be John Cena against Triple H to see who will face Randy Orton at Night of Champions. I mean, damn. It brings back memories of when your average WCW PPV main event always involved Hogan, Nash, Goldberg, or a combination of some old guys.

It was revealed that the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase would be the “guest host” next week.

Match #4 – #1 Contender’s Match: Divas Championship: Kelly vs. Mickie vs. Beth vs. Rosa
Maryse came out right after Mickie’s entrance. I’m not sure why considering the champ usually comes out AFTER all of the contenders have made their entrances. One cool spot in the match was all of the Divas got each of them in headlocks with Kelly not having one placed on her. This was longer than I expected. Some decent moves among the competitors but nothing to write home about or stuff that would make me want to get excited. I mean, I get excited seeing the Divas. Mickie hit the implant DDT for the victory.
Winner: Mickie James

After the match, Mickie & Maryse had a mini-staredown.

Match #5 – The Big Show vs. Kofi Kingston
After being buried by John Cena for months, Semi-Show took on Kofi Kingston. Semi-Show dominated most of the match…nearly 95% of it. Kofi hit a few moves but the action spilled outside. This resulted in a double count out of both men, further weakening Semi-Show. I guess they needed to fill time?
Winner: No contest

Main Event – Randy Orton vs. Evan Bourne, Jack Swagger, Mark Henry
The first acquisition by RAW, as if the Draft wasn’t enough, was Evan Bourne. While I like seeing Evan Bourne on RAW now, I didn’t like the fact this was pretty much a job session for Orton to look good in until the last guy. Orton hit a running RKO to put Bourne away. The next Superstar to debut on RAW was the All-American American Jack Swagger. I wouldn’t mind seeing a tag team of Miz & Swagger. Swagger, presumably playing up being a heel, stood outside the ring and got counted out, giving Orton a victory. I actually liked that move. Protects Swagger but furthers Orton being in the fire. Swagger & Orton shook hands before Orton’s last opponent, Mark Henry, was introduced. Well, I’m not excited about Henry as I was Bourne & Swagger. Henry said he too was going to make an impact just a different one. Henry hit some offense, as well as Orton, then the World’s Strongest Slam for the win.
Winner: Mark Henry

Henry posed and the crowd actually cheered his victory. This is how they get “new” stars into the mix?

I give this RAW:
3 out of 4 ring posts

The Final Word:
For the most part, this was an entertaining show in the short-term. In the long term, not one damn thing was accomplished. If you look at the big picture in the past few years, there’s only been a handful of guys still in the company that are in the main event picture on a consistent basis. These include: Edge, Batista, John Cena, Triple H, Randy Orton, sometimes the Undertaker & Shawn Michaels. Yeah, Jeff Hardy, CM Punk and Chris Jericho have been put into the mix but that’s on the Smackdown side of things. You could even argue that Jericho is enough of a star he wouldn’t need to be elevated. There are some guys that could possibly get over on the main event stage but they’re being held back.

For years during the Monday Night Wars, WWE was THE company that was elevating new talent and creating new stars while WCW held down their talent roster, see Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, Chris Jericho, etc. So, these guys bolted to WWE in hopes of being pushed into new stars. Jericho debuted with a bang & eventually became the first Undisputed Champion. Benoit captured the World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania 20. Guerrero won the WWE Championship. Mysterio had a good run with the World title. Malenko even had success. But for the most part over the past few years, nobody has been elevated on RAW. You can’t really argue that point. Even with John Cena out, it’s been the same guys in the main event picture: Orton, Batista, Triple H, sometimes Jericho, sometimes HBK. They’ve tried guys like JBL or Kane but fans don’t really see them as main eventers who are hungry for title gold. When guys like CM Punk get thrown into the mix on RAW, like last summer, not enough is done by creative to make them a legitimate threat.

It’s not like we’re dealing with Chris Masters or Big Daddy V or the Shockmaster here. MVP is a legitimate threat. Matt Hardy isn’t as good as Jeff but he can still kick ass. Mr. Kennedy was considered injury prone but hell, our special guest host last night is just as if not more injury prone. Kofi Kingston could become a threat but he’ll need a change, maybe turn heel. The Miz has tremendous upside but his credibility has been destroyed by Super Cena. If they want to, they can keep this same main event picture and turn fans off. They might make consistent money but it will never spike unless there’s something to intrigue fans. On RAW, we got a taste of what might be happening. Vince wants new stars but at the same time, he’s burying them left & right. Then, they bring in Mark Henry who hasn’t had upside since his time in the Nation.

Are they trying to make themselves look foolish? Is it too much to ask to have NEW guys instead of older guys who can’t get over?
