RAW is Blogged - Another Leaderless RAW
By Luke Parks on July 22nd, 2008

Pre-Show Notes:
The Great American Bash is in the books!!! We had the US title change hands between Shelton Benjamin and Matt Hardy. I think they should have feuded until Summerslam before the title changed hands. The WWE tag titles changed hands to a team that’s lost every match, up until last Friday night, since May 2nd when the Edgeheads defeated Jesse & Festus. Michelle McCool won the first-ever Divas Championship to a quiet crowd.

This was probably the match of the night. It wasn’t as good as their previous encounters, wrestling-wise, but the story telling was fantastic. As I said in my posts during the PPV, if that had been a UFC fight, they would have stopped it because of the blood that could get in the fighter’s eyes. You would think if Vince & Co were trying to use more MMA expressions/moves, they would have figured that out. Either way, the storytelling was pretty good. My only problem is the whole detached eye or whatever Jericho said. If they play it up but HBK returns for Summerslam, it’s complete BS because he heeled to fast. I know logic and pro wrestling sometimes don’t mix (see Vince Russo’s career) but when things are blatantly obvious, it’s an insult. The match was good and I’m interested in seeing where they go from here.

The NYC Parking Lot brawl was the worst. It reminded me of playing Smackdown vs. RAW. No announcers, the guys fighting around the cars, just pure crap. Cena had his head sent through glass. No blood. He survived a burning car unscathed. Bastard came out with some blood on his elbow at the end but not blood from having his face smashed through the glass. What’s more funny is despite being “ran over” on Monday, Cena had no scratches on him Sunday. I know they said he got out of the way but it “grazed” him. I was “grazed” by a vehicle once and it bloodied me up something nice. For them to do that angle and this match the way they did is complete bullshit.

Triple H and Edge had a good match but I thought it could be better. It seems as if Vickie Guerrero has turned face now. Either way, this feud should continue. Now, enough of the crap. Let’s get to RAW is Blogged!!!

RAW is Blogged:
RAW is live from the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut!!

We start off with a recap of Kane’s actions at the Great American Bash. Batista is shown watching from the production truck. It was eerily similar to the nWo controlling Nitro. No mention of Stephanie or Shane to start off the program.

Opening Segment: Batista, JBL and CM Punk
Batista arrives to a nice pop and talked about how he thought he would be champion. He said the McMahon’s weren’t there and he was now in charge. Monday Nitro anyone? He then made a match between himself & Punk for the World title. JBL then came on screen and talked about how he beat John Cena & he’s the #1 Contender! CM Punk came out and said he still needed to prove himself. So, he accepts Batista’s challenge. JBL then started whining and Batista had his mic cut out as we headed to commercial. Quick opening segment but it got the ball rolling.

At Saturday Night’s Main Event at 9PM on August 2nd on NBC, Jenny McCarthy & Generation Rescue are teaming up to fight Autism. I guess the organization I’m apart of, Wrestling Autism, didn’t float the WWE’s boat.

Match #1: Lance Cade vs. Paul London
HBK’s music hit but it was short lived as Lance Cade made his way out. He called out HBK and said he knew he was at the arena. Paul London came out with the same shoes he had on last week, so I guess it’s a permanent thing. They mentioned that London looked up to HBK but didn’t mention that he was trained by him. Cade dominated London’s quick moves and won with the Rock Bottom Power Bomb.
Winner: Lance Cade

Post match, Cade continued to call out HBK. He then brought out the man that “ended” HBK’s career, Chris Jericho.

In-Ring Segment: Chris Jericho & Lance Cade
Jericho talked about how HBK wasn’t at the arena. So much for communication between Cade & Jericho. He then showed the graphic footage from the Great American Bash. HBK’s eye looked fine to me. Jericho said the “injury” was on the fans and that HBK paid for our sins. He said we didn’t deserve to be saved. He said he’s not the same guy. He’s matured and he’s proud of what he did. Please bring in Bryan Danielson to team with HBK!

After the commercial break, the recapped Santino’s loss to Beth Phoenix.

Match #2: Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix
They gave Kelly enough offense so it wasn’t a total squash. Her offense though was very sloppy. The match even had a faint “Let’s go Kelly” chant. Beth won with the Grand Slam in a short match.
Winner: Beth Phoenix

In-Ring Segment: Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Jerry “The King” Lawler, Cody Rhodes, & Ted DiBiase
Hacksaw Jim Duggan came out and talked about retiring. He said that Rhodes & DiBiase might be right. Lawler got in the ring and told him there’s no age limit and to do it as long as he wanted to. Look at Ric Flair. He got a U-S-A chant going before The Priceless Dream (my new name for them) came out. Rhodes said he was 2 ½ when Duggan won the first Royal Rumble and he wasn’t even born when Lawler slapped Kaufman. In other words, it’s time to step aside. King then slapped Rhodes as JBL made his way down. They all shined in this one. Made Duggan look like a sympathetic old guy, Lawler the one standing up for him, and Priceless Dream the biggest young punks ever.

Match #3: JBL, Cody Rhodes, & Ted DiBiase vs. CTC
JTG got worked over most of the match. They did this last week too and I hope they don’t keep on and make him look weak. I don’t know if anybody saw this but a few times the hard camera started shaking. I don’t know if it was because the fans were jumping up and down or what. One point in the match, the referee missed a count and JBL got all over him. It could have been real because that ref has sucked sometimes before. JBL ended up walking out on his team and left them for a Double FU, which pissed me off. You guys know how I feel about one guy destroying a tag team, let alone the tag team champions. I know they want Cena to look strong, God forbid he look weak at all. But if JBL is going to leave, why not have Cryme Tyme get in on some of the action? That Double FU makes me sick. They’re pushing Rhodes & DiBiase but after that, it makes them look extremely weak. Call it over reacting but that sucked. Let’s not forget Cena not selling any injuries from the night before or last week until he was walking out. PATHETIC!!!
Winners: CTC

Backstage, Lance Cade & Chris Jericho were leaving but before they could get out the door, the Big Red Machine, Kane, made his way in.

Match #4: Mickie James & Kofi Kingston vs. Paul & Katie Lea Burchill
This match was extremely fast paced. Kofi did a bunch of jumping moves, a crossbody and then a missed kick that ended up hitting the post. Burchill then hit a neckbreaker for the pin. This is my gripe about RAW. They have great performers to just have them wrestle for maybe 4 minutes at the most.
Winner: Paul & Katie Lea Burchill

Backstage, Jamie Noble & Layla were talking when Batista came up and told Noble he was looking for Kane. Damn Layla looked good.

CM Punk was talking backstage with Todd Grisham. He said he didn’t want to be a champion that held onto his belt by technicalities. He said if he goes down, he’ll go down swinging. JBL then came in and said he wanted to face the champ at Summerslam. Punk told him his first successful title defense was against him. I thought Punk came off great here.

Match #5: Santino’s Open Challenge - Round 2
Santino came out talking about last week. He said he “doesn’t fight people with fallopian tubes.” The returning D’Lo Brown came out to accept his challenge. I wonder if he’ll team back up with Teddy Long. He got a decent reaction and even a “D-Lo” chant during the match. He ended up hitting the Lo Down for the win.
Winner: D’Lo Brown

Post match saw Beth Phoenix, who came down before the match, attack Santino. They exchanged holds before Beth “whined” her way out of one. They stood there for a second before they kissed. They backed off somewhat confused by what had happened. Santino’s a lucky bastard but a weak-looking one at that. Who will he lose to next week? Michael Cole?

Main Even: World Heavyweight Championship - CM Punk © vs. Batista
Prior to the match, Kane came out and botched a chokeslam on Batista. Punk came down and made the save before the commercial. When they came back, they played it up as if the chokeslam was devastating. It wasn’t. Punk got some good offense in and he tried to wear down Batista. It reminded me of his matches with Samoa Joe in Ring of Honor. JBL came in and hit a Clothesline from Hell on Batista to give him the win by DQ. Cena then came in and nailed Batista by mistake. The Animal in turn tried to give him a Batista Bomb but Cena countered into the FU. The show ended in a pull apart with Cena having a terrifying look on his face. What the f***?

Winner: Batista

I give this RAW:
2 out of 4 ring posts
They tried to build stuff towards Summerslam but it was just weird. It seemed like they did just enough to get by. It wasn’t a bad show but it wasn’t a good show either. It was like an “eh” show. They need to do something with Punk to get him over more. This whole getting lucky to win isn’t working for me.
