RAW is Blogged: The Road to Survivor Series
By Luke Parks on November 18th, 2008

Pre-Show Notes:
As you may have heard, Brock Lesnar won the UFC World Heavyweight Championship over the weekend. Lesnar dominated one of my favorite fighters and UFC Legend, Randy “The Natural” Couture. Lesnar is a beast. He could potentially dominate the UFC for months & years to come. He’ll defend his title later on against Frank Mir or Antonio Nogueira once they have their title fight. By the way, I was 3-1 on my predicted fights with the main event as my only incorrect pick.

Now, some people e-mailed me last week and asked why I didn’t comment on the presidential election, if I was a “sore loser” or something. Well, to be honest, I’m not mad or happy. It’s one of the “eh” deals. I read some of the comments on the comment board about how great Obama would be. I usually keep politics out of this stuff, hints why it’s in my “Pre-Show Notes” section. But to tell me, someone who follows politics & knows what proposals will screw up & will do good, that Obama will be good for us?

One thing I need to clarify before I move on is my comment about Regal devaluing the IC title. Now, for those that have been reading my blogs since I started here in 2006 it’s that I think William Regal is one of the more underrated workers on the WWE roster. In my opinion, he’s the best technical wrestler in the WWE right now. I always wanted him to work a longer program with Jamie Noble, since Noble is also a great technical wrestler. What I meant with my comment was how the title switch was done. I was a bam, bam, bam, and we had a new champion. I thought the squash match took away from the title switch. In other words, they could have handled it differently. They gave them the big time introductions. In my opinion, they could have cut out some of the other crap on the show, like the Mickie-Beth match or the Mike Knox-D’Lo squash match and given Regal & Santino time to put on a great match. I think if they had been given longer to develop a story in the ring, Regal’s pop for winning would have been bigger.

Now, let’s get to RAW is Blogged!!!

RAW is Blogged:
RAW is live from Atlanta, Georgia!!!

Opening Segment: Stephanie McMahon & the RAW Superstars
Stephanie came out for a Q&A session. Randy Orton was up first and he asked why he wasn’t getting a title shot and why John Cena was. Stephanie gave some BS answer and Orton seemed satisfied. Cody Rhodes got on the mic and asked why Orton wasn’t punished for attacking Ted DiBiase and why he’s on Orton’s team for Survivor Series. She said they could be adults and deal with it themselves. Ah, that’s where the UFC is better than WWE. If two guys hate each other, they fight. She then made Orton against CM Punk in a 30-man Lumberjack match. Santino then got on the mic and highlighted that Akon was in the arena. He looked to be a few rows back. I guess he couldn’t afford the “right at ringside” seats. Santino pulled out some crapped rap and said that William Regal wasn’t in a restaurant but he just got served. Santino = comedy gold. JBL got on the mic and asked where Vince was. Stephanie said that Vince was out of the picture for now. I guess he’s dead again? JBL isn’t happy about the match with HBK. HBK got on the match and talked about what would happen if he didn’t wait 6 days. He then jumped off the platform and attacked JBL. A good way to get Survivor Series built between these two & their teams is to have their members get involved. But what do I know, I’m not a writer. What happens? Everybody clears the ring. This whole segment seemed like an ego boost for Stephanie and made the Superstars look like pawns in Stephanie’s evil game.

Match #1: Kelly Kelly vs. Victoria
Cole & Lawler talked about a Divas Survivor Series team match. Yay! Instead of filling the spot with a title match, they’re making a pointless match between 5 Divas from RAW and 5 Divas from Smackdown. Kelly Kelly started us off before Victoria made her way down. It was a quick match will Kelly picking up the victory. Yawn.
Winner: Kelly Kelly

Post match, Victoria attacked Kelly before the RAW Divas ran down to the ring. As Victoria left, Beth Phoenix attacked her. What’s funny is how these Divas couldn’t get along and now they’re working as a team. I know girls who argued years ago and now, they still don’t talk to each other. Don’t you just love pro wrestling?

Match #2: Batista vs. Manu
They noted this was Manu’s debut. Well, what a great debut it was for Umaga Jr. as he got destroyed. I want to take this opportunity to voice my displeasure in the burial of younger stars by main eventers. I know Batista is the main event guy and it’s Manu’s singles debut but this is ridiculous. Do a double DQ or something. Have Rhodes interfere or something. This is ridiculous when a guy who looks like a monster gets killed by Batista.
Winner: Batista

Post match, Batista told Orton that he was tired of hearing him whine for 3 years. He told Batista not to worry about him but to worry about Sunday. YAY!

After the break, Stephanie McMahon was on the stage and she introduced Chief Jay Strongbow. How should I put this…what the f*ck!?

Cole & Lawler then went down the Survivor Series cards. Lawler called the Casket Match one of the most terrifying matches in the WWE. Well, I would put Hell in a Cell, Steel Cage, Inferno, TLC, and Ladder in front of Casket as well as I Quit, Falls Count Anywhere, and even a Tables match.

Meanwhile, Orton found Rhodes backstage and got on him for backing down from Batista. He threatened to kick Rhodes off his SS team. Rhodes told him to keep talking since that’s what he’s best at.

Back in the arena, Todd Grisham introduced a package on Evan Bourne. It basically highlighted his injury, bringing the crowd down, before Grisham brought Bourne out to “update” us on his condition. He came out with a boot on his right leg. Bourne talked about picking up where he left off before Mike Knox came out. Can’t he get released…please? He stared Bourne down before walking off. Did Bourne take Mike Knox’s beard comb or something?

Rey Mysterio was making his way to the ring and he ran into Shawn Michaels in the hall. He told them to cut the music and talked about the people he had walked to the ring with. He joked about walking to the ring. Just think ladies and gentlemen, a few weeks ago, he was in a heated battle with Chris Jericho. Now, he’s crackin’ jokes! Dolph Ziggler showed up and HBK highlighted again his & Mysterio’s match before walking off.

Match #3: The Miz & John Morrison vs. Rey Mysterio & Shawn Michaels
As your typical tag match would have it, the action started off quickly. They both executed a dive on their opponent before we headed to the first commercial break. The heels worked over Mysterio before HBK got the hot tag. They had a cool finish where Mysterio hit the 619, HBK hit the Sweet Chin Music on Miz, then Morrison hit a Superkick on HBK so Miz could get the pin. It was good that at least one young team got over.
Winner: The Miz & John Morrison

Another John Cena package aired. Then, Chris Jericho told Stephanie McMahon that when John Cena returned, chaos would reign on RAW. Yeah, and we had a calm scene during the Adamle Administration. Elsewhere, Kane met up with JBL. JBL said he was a great leader because he could relate to his men. Last political related comment but Obama doesn’t relate to me at all. Anyway, Kane mentioned that JBL’s hobby was financial analysis while his was electrocuting men’s groins with car batteries (an ode to Shane O’Mac).

Elsewhere, CM Punk went down how frustrating the last few weeks had been. Yeah, winning the tag titles and being left off the show will do that to a man. He said that Orton’s kick was a statement but with the lumberjacks, he wouldn’t be able to escape. Punk said he didn’t get everything handed to him like Orton but he would get payback. Punk once again proves that he’s a great talker. I just can’t wait until they turn him heel and they get awesome heel promos that guys could take notes from.

Match #4: Cryme Tyme vs. JBL & Kane
This was basically a squash. Kane was about to nail JTG with a chokeslam before JBL stepped in and hit the Clothesline from Hell for the win. There ya go! Bury a formidable tag team!
Winner: Kane & JBL

Backstage, Kofi Kingston was talking with Evan Bourne before Mike Knox ran in and took out Kofi. Knox then pushed over Bourne with his leg before hitting Bourne in his hurt leg with a crutch. By a show of hands, who would rather watch Mike Knox over Evan Bourne? That’s what I thought. Not a damn one of you. By a show of hands, how many of you think it’s wise to bury a Tag Team Champion for a guy who will never draw (Knox)? That’s what I thought. None of you again.

After the break, they recapped Knox’s assault on Evan Bourne.

Match #5: William Regal vs. Matt Hardy
Regal talked about how Atlanta displayed what was wrong with the United States. He then cut a pro-British promo. Matt Hardy then made his way down to the ring. The action spilled outside and they both got counted out. They brawled after the match which is always fun to see.
Winner: No Contest

In-Ring Segment: Chris Jericho
Lillian Garcia introduced the World Heavyweight Champion, Chris Jericho. Cole mentioned his title defense at Survivor Series. Man, this thing has gotten a lot of build! (Sarcasm intended). Jericho then said we’ve all heard Cena’s story so he thought he would tell us his. He then talked about winning the Undisputed Championship after beating The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin. He said that’s bigger than anything John Cena’s done. Wait, didn’t he hold the WWE Championship for a year? He mentioned all of the stuff he’s done since he’s returned. He then mentioned that Cena’s never beaten him. Just wait, Jericho.

Main Event - Lumberjack Match: Randy Orton vs. CM Punk
Randy Orton came out first followed by CM Punk. Did you know that Orton wanted Punk’s music and actually used it one time? Vince & Co. said it didn’t fit Orton’s character. Could this be the end of the potentially great feud between Orton & Punk? We’ll find out! During the match, Lawler explained how the Lumberjack Match originated from actual lumberjacks fighting within a circle of other lumberjacks. Sure, and the Casket Match originated from Ancient Mayans fighting during the Winter Solstice. Punk did a plancha towards the end of the match that was cool before Orton got in the ring and hit the RKO for the win. Well, your tag teams champs have officially been destroyed.
Winner: Randy Orton

After the match, all hell broke loose as predicted.

I give this RAW:
3 out of 4 ring posts
They did an alright job of building towards Survivor Series. The thing that bothers me is they wanted until 6 days before the event to really try & build it. Once again, the WWE doesn’t do a great job of getting us ready for a big PPV as far as long term build is concerned.
