Booking CM Punk vs. The Rock, No Title Match At Survivor Series, Overdoing Gimmicks, Raw Announce

If WWE goes ahead with CM Punk vs. The Rock for the WWE Championship, how do you seeing it being booked?

Even if CM Punk defends the WWE Championship at WWE TLC in December, I’m under the impression he will defend it against The Rock at Royal Rumble. This has been the plan and given the fact Punk isn’t defending the title at Survivor Series, we can say with more confidence he’ll be Rock’s opponent next year. As for how I book Punk vs. Rock, it’s a tricky situation but Rock has to go over if he is going to have any value for Wrestlemania. We can debate the message putting a part-timer over a regular roster member sends for the title but the fact of the matter is Rock has to look strong going into Wrestlemania. A loss wouldn’t hurt CM Punk and even if it did, WWE is banking on Rock, Lesnar and John Cena to sell Wrestlemania.

What’s your opinion of there not being a WWE Championship match at Survivor Series?

Given the current predicament WWE is in trying to book a competitive feud between CM Punk and Ryback, neither of which they want to lose, I understand there not being a WWE title match at Survivor Series. My problem is Ryback is no longer undefeated and they are going to have to do something at Tables, Ladders & Chairs to blowoff Punk/Ryback before moving on to The Rock. So while the traditional Survivor Series match gives them time to come up with something, there is no desirable outcome in sight.

What is the point of the gimmick pay-per-views of the gimmick isn’t used for the entire pay-per-view. One Hell in a Cell match?

The gimmick pay-per-views are a result of WWE surveying fans a couple years ago about their interest in pay-per-views that revolved around the concepts you see today. WWE has handled the gimmicks well by using them as a promotional mouthed to make B-level shows “matter” without overdoing the gimmick. Eight Hell in a Cell matches is too many and kills any significance of a main event. I am high up on how WWE has incorporated the gimmicks into the B-level shows without taking them too far to the point where the gimmicks hold little significance.

Will Jim Ross continue to be on the Raw announce team when Jerry Lawler returns in two weeks?

Unless I hear otherwise, I’m under the impression that Raw will return to its normal announce team of Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler in two weeks in Columbus, Ohio.

To be honest, i'd like to see Lawler as Raw gm, then keep the announce teams as they are(Ross/Cole on raw, JBL/Matthews on sd).

  • William Shatner

As glad as I am that the King is alright, and as much as I repsect both King and JR, I wouldn't mind if neither of them stayed around on commentary. Both have been around for donkey's years already. Jr's out of practice and makes a fair few mistakes regarding names and mumbles and slurs a lot (understandable, considering, but still…) and King is a caricature of his former self. I know most of the IWC has a massive hardon for these two but really I'd like to see an announce team like Michael Cole and Matt Striker, or Cole and Matthews, or a pair/trio who don't seem like cartoon versions of themselves ten years ago.

    • Sam The Man.

Your right on King. He was far better and funnier as a heel when working with JR. Just as JBL is doing or Bobby henan.

      • BigMike

I can see everyone's point about having a change at commentary BUT leaving Cole in there as well? NO JBL has been great back on commentery BUT Cole has always been horrible in there he has ZERO personality at least King and JR have personality Punk was great when he does commentary. ity is very difficult to find a good dynamic between 2 people Like Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan, they were perfect and IMO the best announcing duo EVER.

        • justsomeguy

Vince and or Gorilla with Jesse Ventura was golden too.

    I see

what i wanna kno is, will Michael Cole go back to being that annoying heel announcer that he was b4 King had the heart attack? JBL is exactly what a heel announcer should be. Cole takes things way over the top!

  • Rayner Chee-bai

Lawler should return and turn heel by slamming JR. That will be pretty awesome. King should be a heel announcer again by then.

  • Tom

Rock only needs to go over if they are doing Rock vs Cena 2. They could go the route of having Brock come in cost Rock the match and do Rock vs Brock, and Punk vs Austin. I really hope Dolph cashes in at elimination chamber and they do Dolph vs Bryan for the world title.

    • Lee

We don't need Rock vs Cena 2, Plus it can't be done if Rock wins at RR they're not going to have a single match at Elimination Chamber. When the WWE title has always been defended inside the Chamber.

  • Blake

No jr has to stat hasn’t Vince treated him badly enough!!!!????

  • Kevin

Everyone at the announce table should move over one spot to their right when the king returns.

  • MikeElliott94

Richard, you addressed TLC, but what about Elimination Chamber? How are they going to book the Elimination Chamber PPV because there almost has to be a WWE Championship Elim Chamber match, right?

  • Snap

The chamber match doesn't need to be for the championship, as the 2011 match (as well as both matches in 2008) was for a WrestleMania title shot at the WWE championship. So, if Rock is WWE champion at the time and a SmackDown guy wins the Rumble, they can use the chamber to determine the #1 contender again.

  • unknown

i hope when King returns that Cole stays to announcing the way he has been. much better this way than the over the top heel. plus keep jbl as smackdown commentator cause he just flourishes in that role

  • Lynx

WWE are turning from worst to worsen..how possible WWE let no WWE title defense in Survivor Series?it doesn't make any sense to let that pathetic PUNK prolonged his title for longer period than CENA ..It's not worth of doing it..people are sick with that Lame PUNK proclaim that he is the Best in the world yet all victories that he get always with controversy and with others help..do WWE really think PUNK is the best..if these keep on continuing the rating of WWE audiences will continually going down..trust me..

    • Evon Reese

@Lynx you are so right. Punk doesn't draw ratings and people are so sick of him. It's the same old whiny crap.

    • Liamg90

He is a heel champ thats how they always get booked like this, finding an other way to hold on to the title. Plus why would you want to see cena as champ goin into the rumble when punk vs rock will be better

  • Adamtrace

Please fix the wrapping on the comments, after a couple of lengthy ones they are off the screen in the app and can’t be read.

  • Razmos

All you hating on Punk means he is playing his character well, he is a heel, he is ment to annoy you, he is ment to moan and get cheap wins!!!

    • http://www.blog-time.webnode.com Adam

Agree, I am not a punk fan, and never have been. I always respected him though

  • John

I don't think anyone should have an issue with The Rock going over CM Punk and carrying the WWE title into Wrestlemania! The Rock & Cena carried WM 28 to a record breaking buyrate on there own.. They deserve the spotlight again.
