CM Punk Walks Out, Build To Wrestlemania XXX, Sting Gone From TNA, Favorite Moments

Has your opinion changed at all over the last two week as to whether or not CM Punk walking out is a shoot or a work?

We’ve reported that CM Punk walking out was a shoot since the beginning. We did highlight how it could become a work and that is what WWE had initially hoped for. The hope was they would be able to convince Punk to come back only to return in a program that had a lot more hype around it. However, since then, WWE has moved further and further away from CM Punk. I opened the week by reporting WWE was moving on under the assumption Punk was gone and wasn’t coming back and that’s exactly how we’ll close it. The new piece of information we were able to confirm this week was he left Royal Rumble banged up with an apparent head injury.

Does the Road to Wrestlemania XXX not seem as interesting or appearing as it has in years past?

WWE blew a major opportunity with Daniel Bryan at Royal Rumble. He was the guy everyone wanted to see go over in the 30-man bout and challenge for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania XXX, however, the decision was Batista was getting that match and WWE didn’t waver from it. The company paid for their own stubbornness as the fans turned hard on the show and they’ve been in damage control mode since. However, Bryan opened and closed Raw the next night and went over Randy Orton clean in a main event match this week. While I still wonder if Bryan is going to get a protected run as a top guy, it does seem like the message has been received. As for the build the pay-per-view itself, it’s still very early with no matches announced. Things got off to a disappointing start with a bad Rumble pay-per-view but with the WWE Network coming, I’m still looking forward to it.

Is Sting finished with TNA Wrestling?

The overwhelming belief is Sting is finally headed to WWE. As I wrote earlier in the week, TNA has moved on under the assumption he is gone and not coming back. However, I’ll tell you there are those in TNA Wrestling that still believe there’s a chance he does in fact return. I can also confirm there was interest in Sting in the new Jeff Jarrett/Toby Keith project although I would be surprised if he chose to join a startup this late in his career.

What are a few of your favorite moments in professional wrestling?

When I think of my “favorite moments,” I like to think of the moments that had a long-lasting major impact. Hulk Hogan’s body slam on Andre the Giant at Wrestlemania III, Scott Hall showing up on WCW Monday Nitro, Hogan turning heel on Team WCW at Bash in the Beach 1996, Steve Austin’s bloodied face while working Bret Hart, Shane McMahon showing up on Nitro in 2001, Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle at Wrestlemania 19, Shawn Michaels retiring Ric Flair at Wrestlemania XXIV, Undertaker retiring Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania XXVI, CM Punk’s pipe bomb promo in 2011 and The Rock vs. John Cena at WrestleMania XXVIII. I’m sure I missed more than one but can you tell I’m excited to go back and watch the tape library with the WWE Network?

From the Ask WNW vault…

March 2012: How does The Rock vs. John Cena compare to Rock vs. Hollywood Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania X8 a decade ago? - I actually think The Rock vs. John Cena is a bigger match and has more hype surrounding it than Rock vs. Hogan. Hogan was already out of his prime by the time the Wrestlemania X8 match happened and this isn’t the case with Rock and Cena. Rock is not even 40 yet (Hogan was 48) and can still compete at a very high level. The Rock vs. Cena is unique in that you have one of the biggest stars of the Attitude Era versus the biggest star of today yet the former is still young enough to work at a top level. I’m not saying it’ll be the best Wrestlemania match ever, it might not even be the best match of the night, but I do not recall another bout having as much build and hype as Rock vs. Cena.

I’ll be traveling next week so the next installment of Ask WNW is scheduled to run on Thursday, February 13, 2014.

Hey Richard I think there is a mistake in your favorite moments.

Steve Austin never tapped to Bret Hart at Survivor Series 1996. He was pinned in similar fashion like Bret Hart pinning Roddy Piper for IC title. I think you meant Austins bloody face at Wrestlemania 13 in the sharpshooter but never tapped out. He passed out.

    • AlphaMale

Beat me to it! Kudos sir lol

      • Venom

I have OCD where I check wrestling sites on my iPad when not busy. I happened to go on here once this was posted.

    • Mysterion

      Damn you got there first!

    • BigMike

Austin and Hart wrestled more than once and when Hart did the reversal into the pin, was when Austin challenged Bret when Bret took time off after his loss to HBK in 1996 same year AUstin won the King of The Ring but it was WM 1997 that Hart bloodied him up and Austin never tapped

      • Venom

Yeah that’s pretty much what I said.

Hmmm maybe Ambrose Rollins turn on Reigns at Elimination Chamber setting up 2 v 1 handicap match at Wrestlemania and then have Sting come out as surprise to help Reigns. I wouldnt mind this scenario if Sting were to appear at Wrestlemania 30 and then Sting v Taker WM 31

    • Venom

It sounds good but I personally hate handicap matches as it makes the wrestlers with the advantage look weak. If they lose, they lost while having an advantage. Of they win then it took 2 of them to beat one wrestler. Sadly, WWE does it too often.

Remember when Legacy feuded with John Cena and they’d always challenge him in handicap matches? Or when Undertsker wrestled half the year and would feud with one of Heymans wrestler like Heidenreich, always ended in a handicap match. Or just recently Rybck/Heyman vs. Punk.

Na I think if they break up The Shield it should be a complete break-up, but I am still against The Shield breaking up, still think that they can be used for alot more, they’re clearly stating that The Shield is one of the better factions in WWE history, 1 time WWE Tag Championions doesn’t do it for me.

& still kind of against Sting V Undertaker, it means one of them has to lose, and they both have had amazing careers. Neither of them deserve to lose against the other.

      • Rus

I think they should turn the shield babyface instead of breaking them up. If it doesn’t work out it would be pretty easy turning 1 of them heel to break them up

        • Jimmy

I think its clear that in the long run Ambrose will be a top heel, Rollins will be a top face and reigns is gonna be the next big thing either way. He can pull off heel or face.

      • Mysterion

Thing is, against it or not dude, the seeds are being sewn. Every gimmick has a shelf life. Ask John Cena. Shield have reached theirs last year. They’ve literally taken everyone out so much that I’m little over a year they had feuds with Punk twice. It’s time to disband the Shield and see where the wind carries them as all three have tremendous upsides they SHOULD all be given huge runs. Or, alternatively as we live in the McMahon mind machine, Roman Reigns will continue to break records holding the WWE Title for 9 years in one run.

        • JR Texx (Jamie)

The Shield could last alot longer if they where booked better :)

    • opie

I think a triple threat between the three members would tear the house down at Mania. Give them 10-15 minutes together, all kinds of craziness could ensue.

  • JR Texx (Jamie)

I still want CM Punk to come back, think most, if not all of us can agree on that, but I just don’t think he’s coming back. I still can’t believe people are spamming WWE pages like their facebook page saying We Want Punk. I’m just like “urgh” at this point.

Honestly, I didn’t want D.Bryan to win the rumble, he’s gonna get on the card and a main event either way, I think the Royal Rumble would have just determined whether it was for the title or not. I still think D.Bryan V HHH is a great match up. D.Bryan will get his chance hoping VERY SOON.

People maybe saying Sting is headed to WWE, but I am still at the case where it’s like Cena turning heel, I’ll have to see it to believe it.

I have to agree the Streak V Career match. That would have always been a good match. Rock V Cena.. would have been better if Cena didn’t work injured.. I mean you could tell, it kind of made some parts of the match look sloppy, take The Rock’s sharpshooter for example.

    • Bob’s Diner

      Cena was injured?
The Rock has always done a very poor sharpshooter

      • JR Texx (Jamie)

I’m pretty sure Cena was the one injured going into WM28 with his back.

    • Venom

You mean The Rock was injured going in.

Personally I don’t care if Bryan won the rumble or not or was in the rumble. Fans even chanted for Roman Reign when it came down to final 2 so it’s not they’re just pro Punk and Bryan they donnish don’t wan the predictable same old same old.

I just wish WWE made better use for 75% of the roster so that anybody could win the rumble. The last few rumble winners were predictable, maybe when Del Rio won it was rumored but still a surprise. Then again his rumble win didn’t mean much since he warns Sheamus the following year were match openers.

I mean WWE never advertised Bryan for the rumble so they didn’t false advertise anything. But last years rumble was way better then this year just horrible ending like this year. Same predictable people winning it.

I think at the end of the day it’s Vince’s show and he can do whatever we want and we have the choice to pay to attend his show (so he makes money) and cheer or boo him. Just like reality shows where producers like to manipulate the game for their favorites. It’s their show in the end.

  • Rus

Ok in a true conspiracy theorist term, this is a false flag……… Just the fact that we have not heard a peep from CM Punk makes me believe it and this is my reason. With all the hype the WWE universe has been showing towards Daniel Bryan the authority were backed way into a corner in the most important time of the year. Now CM Punk does this and it has given a major storyline to replace the Yesmovement. Richard had in an article the other week that WWE are going to bring the yes chants under control and in the last 2 weeks on raw you can see it happening with giving Daniel Bryan the spot light but not the ball to run with it & I think Im crazy but even in the match against Orton he didn’t do much of the yes chant at all. But back to Punk, he has still remained silent, the focus has been taken off Bryan and I think Batista actually got threw a promo without a single yes chant…… that in itself is proof enough

  • Jonathan Salcido

I’d absolutely, positively love for this to be a work, Punk return at Chamber, turn on Bryan, giving him so much heat people wouldn’t have any choice but to vilify Punk, then go on to a major co main event match against between himself and Bryan. That would be great and it would finally give wwe a top heel, even though they don’t want to generate “heels or faces.”

    • Jimmy

This is now the fourth edition of Ask WNW that talks about Punk, it’s pretty clear that he gone and not coming back.

  • Jason Bagemehl

i heard a rumor rock will be back for mania next year and one of stings conditions was to fight rock

    • Mysterion

      This

  • BigMike

I could see Sting helping Jeff out in the new Promotion.. Sting is a very loyal person and has always credited Jeff’s father for his start in wrestling. and People also forget that before TNA had its weekly time slot, Sting appeared in TNA a few times, when it was still in Nashville

  • _JIM_

If Sting has really signed with WWE, and they plan on putting him in a match at Wrestlemania, they are going to have to get him on TV really soon. Same thing with Hogan and Piper. If all of these big names are really going to be a big part of ‘Mania, the next 2 months prior to the show is going to be insane. There could literally be a major debut or redebut every other week. Oh yeah, and let’s not forget they also still have to get The Undertaker back on TV and involved in a feud with somebody. If they have really signed all of these big names, and plan on using them at ‘Mania, this years “Road to Wrestlemania” will be the best one ever. That’s IF they can actually pull it all off without blowing it. Which I have serious concerns about due to their recent track record. For a company that claims to rely on giving their fans what they want. They haven’t been doing such a good job of it at all. So keeping that in mind when I think about all these names coming in, I’m not very confident that we fans are going to get what we want out of it. It would just be way too many big and popular names for WWE to put into situations that will make the fans happy IMO. Never the less I am super stoked to see who shows up on TV, and what is done with them once they arrive.

  • Jimmy

Richard, does it really take the World Championship to make someone a “top guy”? In my opinion Daniel Bryan is already considered a top guy.
