More On CM Punk/Rumored Raw Return, When Rumors Began Heating Up

The Internet is blowing up with rumblings regarding the status of CM Punk with this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw emanating from the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois. There is already plenty of speculation out leading to misinformation, however, I’ll recap everything I know so you can tie this story together.

On Saturday evening I communicated with one of my sources who was led to believe that Punk would be returning to WWE on this week’s episode of Raw. We talked about it at length, however, I decided against running a story until I gathered more information. Early Sunday morning I spoke with another source that confirmed that Vince McMahon has been working around the clock to get Punk back for Wrestlemania XXX. This source had no knowledge of my conversation on Saturday evening, thus I was able to double source that Punk working for WWE again is something that is relatively widespread. This is a change from last week, when I classified a Punk return at Raw as doubtful.

That’s where the story stops. The rumors started heating up on Saturday evening that Punk could be returning and on Sunday morning we confirmed there were extraordinary efforts being made to bring him back for Raw in Chicago, leading to a spot on the Wrestlemania card.

With that being said, there is no confirmation that Punk is returning to WWE on Monday night. If you heard that, or believe that, please realize that is based on an assumption and not a fact. The first I was made aware of the rumblings was on Saturday evening just after 7:00 PM EST.

I have heard Dave Meltzer cited as being nearly 100% certain that Punk returns on Monday. If he doesn’t WWE needs to be proactive and address the situation with the live crowd and turn it into an angle, even if it means burying him to forward the Bryan-Triple H story.

    • Bob’s Diner

      Meltzer isn’t a trustworthy source of information…

      • Mysterion

Right. I just reread the premium article and at no point did Richard suggest Punk is back. So are you just trying to stir s***? Or are you too cheap to pay for premium and make assumptions based off titles if articles?

      • IncoherentRambling

Meltzers been doing this for 30 years. He’s one of the most trustworthy guys in the business.

        • Bob’s Diner

He also has a rep for sharing complete misinformation. Remember the Ashley Massaro saga when he was trying to say there were two different models using that name, despite them clearly being the same person?

Go back and listen to his reports around Royal Rumble last year. Not a single thing he said came to fruition, other than The Rock/John Cena rematch that everyone in the world could have predicted

        • Bob’s Diner

So… that Meltzer guy was spot on again, huh?

  • BIG M

I almost hope this doesn’t happen.
I mean as much as I would like to see Punk back in WWE (which is still unlikely) it would be worth it to see the well lets call them “passionate” Chicago fans hijack the show.
That would be MUST SEE TV LOL.

    • Bob’s Diner

      Think of the ovation though…
The funny thing is, the fans rejecting Batista so badly has actually played into CM Punk’s hand a bit; now they have a heel vs heel match, they could add Punk so he gets his WrestleMania main event and the fans get someone they like so they don’t completely destroy the match. And they can still have Batista go over without causing a riot

      • BIG M

I don’t think even having Punk return and being placed in the main event at Mania is enough to stop rioting if Batista goes over in April.
I mean DB’s so bloody over right now and even if its guys fans like such as Punk in the match instead of him they would riot.
People are so invested in a Daniel Bryan title win payoff I honestly think they would boo the crap out of anyone even in the mix for a title storyline instead of him.

        • David F.

If Punk does come back you can do Punk v Orton v Batista with Batista winning title and then persuming Bryan beats Triple H have Hogan give Bryan his title shot right after the match thus Bryan beats Batista for the belt. I agree though having Batista walk out with belt would cause fans to riot and chant for refunds

          • Snap

I may have missed something, but how does Hogan being the “host” of WrestleMania give him any authority to make matches or give title shots? The Rock was the host of WrestleMania 27 and I don’t recall him being in a general manager or commissioner type of role.

          • David F.

WWE likes pretend fans forget details like that such as Big Show’s ironclad contract storyline. You can always have Hogan tell Trips and Steph that the board gave him power to give fans what they want and that is Bryan getting chance walk out of WM with the title. Plus a triple threat can hide the face Batista is out of shape. You can have Orton and Punk do most of the work

          • Bob’s Diner

Absolutely – they are going to need someone in there that can really go in the ring but I don’t think having Daniel Bryan go under is going to help the crowd at all. It needs to be someone people like but losing won’t destroy everything. Having CM Punk in with them would make it a more interesting match and if he lost you can still do Daniel Bryan beating HHH to close the show

Though I just made sense, something WWE creative don’t like to do. They’ll probably just add Big Show or Bo Dallas

          • the great one

To be fair he did restart the miz and cena match so would of had some authority to do that.

          • Bob’s Diner

I think people really are missing the point – it is most likely in Batista’s contract that he wins the belt. No way he would have returned otherwise. WWE or at least HHH figured he would be super over on his return… they completely underestimated the popularity of Daniel Bryan.

          • David F.

you are probably right on that one and I guess we will just have to deal with it lol

          • Bob’s Diner

I’d love to be wrong but Daniel Bryan’s promo on Monday pretty much sealed it for me. He never once talked about being champion – it was all about proving himself to the authority and against HHH. If they were going with the whole ‘win a match to get a shot’ thing, they’d have him saying he wanted a shot and then have HHH say ‘you have to go through me first’ or something… instead he was trying to sell the crowd on the idea that beating HHH is his ultimate goal

    • Snap

I honestly don’t want to see any more needless hijacking by “fans” who just want to engage in such hijacking to seem “cool.” I thought it was a perfectly acceptable reaction when WWE gave them the middle finger by rejecting their app vote the RAW after WrestleMania but crowds ever since then have tried to copycat it every chance they get and have generally come across looking like idiots in the process. The crowd is meant to enhance the show not “hijack” the show.

  • http://www.Twitter.com/wwediva87 Mrs. Ambrose

Thank goodness! because the fans hijacking raw would’ve been a dumb idea.

  • Danny_Boy

Like I’ve been saying. Punk quit b/c he realized that his trusty sidekick Daniel Bryan had surpassed him as a wrestler and in fan popularity so the only thing Punk could do to steal it back was to quick so he could get the focus back on him. Punk is easily one of the biggest phonies I’ve ever seen in the 37 years I’ve been watcging wrestling

    • Bob’s Diner

Maybe if you paid less attention to wrestling and more attention to the English language in those 37 years your comments wouldn’t come across as those of a 10 year-old

    • RKM_13

Surpassed him as a wrestler? When has Punk been the better wrestler out of him and Dragon?

I love him as a wrestler, but he’s nowhere near in Dragon’s league.

  • disqus_HZkhbeFufx

This is a great time to be a wrestling fan.

    • Paul

Is it? Because wrestling is virtually dead due to companies inability to progress into the future. WWE can’t do it hence them ignoring what the fans want and have the same boring people headline ppv’s. Orton, Batista and Cena. The reason fans are hijacking is because they are desperate for something new! That’s why they were cheerin for Roman and Royal Rumble.
If it’s him or batista they wanted him to win. The reason TNA is dead is because the same idiots have been doing the same old things for years and the company has slowly shrivelled up and died. What wrestling needs is a New Everything. New company, new match types, new stars, new everything it must evolve. UFC is just pro wrestling camouflaged and that’s why it is ruling the roost of ppv. It’s new, it’s exciting and it stands out.

      • disqus_HZkhbeFufx

I agree entirely. It is a great time. We are on the precipice of a revolution or destruction of a whole industry which in itself may occur in the next few years. and we the fans get the front row seats to these events.

        • Bob’s Diner

WWE will never die. No chance of that happening now.

          • disqus_HZkhbeFufx

A lot of people said that about wcw and that died slow and horrible. The product will just stagnate and die due to lack of interest and growth. It can happen any company really.

          • Bob’s Diner

WWE has too many revenue streams. Even WWE Studios finally posted a hefty profit last year. They now also have their own channel, so even if they ever lost their weekly TV times they would still be able to air them.

You and I will die before WWE. I guarantee it

          • disqus_HZkhbeFufx

And what if the studio has a flop the tv sales fall and investors lose confidence. The network could easily fail due to lack of interest and the product being underdeveloped by not feeding into what the fans want. I know it’s not likely but bigger companies have fallen a lot faster. Equally they could do amazing either way my original statement stands. It’s a great time to be a fan.

      • Bob’s Diner

I firmly believe TNA needs to die. In order for pro-wrestling to progress and improve, the so-called number two promotion needs to end so something better can take its place. Until then, WWE will not be challenged and good talent will just be squandered in terrible storylines by both companies

        • Paul

I was praying that TNA could be a direct competitor to WWE so wrestling could be rejuvenated like the old Monday Night Wars days. Since Hogan and Bischoff sent TNA further back into obscurity I lost hope. I watched TNA last night and have given up watching, possibly forever. The stupid Abyss is Joseph Park storyline, repackaging Jeff Hardy as a stupid fantasy Willow character. I’m done. WWE is putting in a similar effort so frankly I believe WWE should die too. Wrestling needs 5-10 years to heal and should be rebooted in my opinion.

  • Tim

People are threatening to hijack the show. Plus he had more buzz than just about anybody on the show. Do you non iwc people still think punk isn’t that big or popular. Fans never tried to hijack over Daniel Bryan. No hate to Daniel Bryan tho. I mean who could.

    • Bob’s Diner

      EDITED
Sorry didn’t read your comment properly. Totally misunderstood it to say people weren’t chanting CM Punk at Daniel Bryan. Which they have. Because he is missed quite a lot…

  • Bill Krow

Clobbering time starts again on monday!! BEST IN THE WORLD!

    • Bob’s Diner

I can’t even begin to imagine how nuts the crowd would go if the show opened with Cult of Personality…

      • Bill Krow

Yea would be epic, especially for the people for the fans that knew it almost didnt happen and all the backstage stuff surrounding the situation if in fact that all the talk was legit.

  • Anon

Vince is trying desperately to save WM…but I do’t believe it until I see Punk with my own eyes…

  • Winston N. Wordsworth

I noticed Richard just deletes anything anyone says that’s even slightly negative (and in some cases true) about him or the site. Even the garbage dirt sheets don’t do that. This will probably be deleted too.

    Tell the world my story!

    • Bob’s Diner

Not true. He only moderates comments with offensive language, as far as I know. There have been numerous negative comments on here directed towards him and this site. Heck, I’ve even been a jerk to him on a couple of occasions. Go post something on WrestleZone about how much an article sucks and see how far that gets you… or even tell Meltzer something negative. Bet that would go down well

      • Winston N. Wordsworth

I saw two comments on here earlier that weren’t offensive and I know I’ve questioned speculation on the site before, nothing offensive, and it was removed.

        • Bob’s Diner

          Interesting… my apologies, then.

    • http://www.wrestlingnewsworld.com/ Richard Gray

We moderate comments on a case-by-case basis. I don’t mind criticism as long as it’s constructive, respects the site and respects other readers. When a red flag gets raised and I run a search on a user’s IP to find the only comments they have made are “trolling” in nature, I delete them and ban the user. We want everyone to enjoy the website and give EVERYONE a chance for their voice to be heard. However, when you comment it’s important to follow the rules of respect. Also, more leniency is given to regular contributors. For example, someone that has a good reputation on the site for offering well thought out comments is given more “open reign” than someone such as yourself that has two comments, both of which are looking to start a fight/drama.

  • Jasont2300

Vince turned Batista heel and continued Bryan vs HHH because Punk will return and compete in the main event

    • Bob’s Diner

It actually makes sense, I won’t argue. Anyone who actually thinks after last Raw that Daniel Bryan will be added to the main event is setting themselves up for disappointment

  • Jasont2300

If Batista wins the title over Punk and Orton at wm30, Do you know how bad ass of a heel he can be??? He can be the best heel of this decade because of how people hate

    • Bob’s Diner

This. And then Daniel Bryan is even more of a hero when he finally beats him

    • Anon

Once again people are confusing heel heat with X-Pac heat…
