More Details On The Contract Issues With Bobby Roode & Why They Weren’t The First & Aren’t Expected To Be The Last – Backstage News On Major Change In The Way TNA Wrestling Is Paying Their Talent & Why It Is Being Done

The big story coming out of the weekend was the contract status of Bobby Roode with TNA Wrestling. While his future was unclear on Saturday, he ended up working Lockdown on Sunday as advertised.

We’re told this isn’t the first contract issue that has come up since Bruce Prichard took over as Senior Vice President of Programming and Talent Relations but they’ve been kept quiet for the most part. We still don’t have full details on what specifically happened with Roode but were able to obtain more information.

There has been a major change in a lot of the new contracts TNA has been offering. The new deals provide weekly guarantees opposed to talent being paid per appearance . The company has slowly worked to renegotiate existing deals with this as well. It’s good for rarely used or undercard talent because they’re still getting paid even if they don’t appear.

However, for workers that are routinely on shows and main event talent, the new structure ultimately puts less money in their pockets. My source says there was some type of hangup with Roode over the amount of money he was been offered per week as he wanted to remain under his per appearance deal (even though he had an appearance minimum but he was working far more than that minimum). This makes me believe the fifth year of Roode’s contract he signed in 2009 was a company option that they declined and attempted to restructure.

The situation was ultimately rectified with Roode working Lockdown but this is expected to be an ongoing issue for the next year or two until all the contracts have been converted or old deals are completed to their expiration.

The reason for the changes are to make sure there are less people under contract, make sure they use who is under contract and end up with fixed salary costs so it’s not so unpredictable how much they’ll be spending each year on talent.

There’s no crime in this, and frankly I’m surprised they didn’t do it earlier.
