Did Daniel Wyatt Fail?, Orton/Cena Booked Backwards, WWE Network Impacting Current TV, Jeff Hardy's Status, All WWE PPVs

I totally popped for Daniel Bryan turning on Bray Wyatt on this week's Monday Night Raw but I must know. Was this the plan the whole time or did WWE realize what an epic fail it was to kill his momentum?

Was it an epic fail? I'll argue Daniel Bryan is more over today than he was before he was paired with The Wyatt Family. The brief moment of outrage seemed to do nothing to "cool" Bryan's momentum and actually increased it when it was thought he had peaked. I'll have more details on the creative side of things online later on Tuesday but there's one thing I always urge readers to do - that's to have patience. We have to see how things play out before we label something as an epic fail or resounding success. The paranoia within the IWC regarding Bryan isn't unjustified but there's one thing I've been saying since this summer - Vince McMahon realizes he was wrong about Daniel Bryan and sees him as a top guy.

Do you think WWE could have done something more with John Cena vs. Randy Orton now that Orton has "attacked" Cena's father?

The booking of this program between John Cena and Randy Orton for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship is unique in that it's been booked backwards. What I mean by that is they started with the TLC gimmick match and are reverting back to a traditional singles match at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view in a couple of weeks. There are multiple reasons for this but the build to the match at WWE TLC was great and they can now blow the program off in the shadow of the 30-man Royal Rumble match in a pay-per-view featuring a Brock Lesnar singles match and the return of Batista. I have no problems with the backwards booking in this specific case.

What will happen to Raw after the WWE Network launches in the United States? Will it still be watchable outside of the US?

All WWE television contracts will remain in place following the launch of the WWE Network. Vince McMahon said in a conference call on Tuesday morning that WWE and the USA Network feel the Network will improve television ratings because it's going to increase interest. The USA Network does not currently air any replays of Raw so the company doesn't expect the fact that replays will air on the WWE Network will result in any cannibalisation.

What's Jeff Hardy's contract status with TNA Wrestling?

Jeff Hardy signed a contract extension with TNA Wrestling in February 2013, believed at the time to be a deal that was for two years. Even if the second year was an option year, he's locked in through next month. Hardy was written off television to avoid problems with the upcoming European tour (he was advertised last year, then pulled when he couldn't get clearance to travel because of a past drug conviction).

With WWE announcing on Raw that every pay-per-view they along with WCW and ECW ever produced, does that include WWF Over the Edge 1999 (the show in which Owen Hart died on)?

As I noted here on WrestlingNewsWorld.com, I do not expect WWF Over the Edge 1999 to be available on the WWE Network. The show was never released commercially on VHS or DVD, nor should it have been. Some readers suggested WWE could air it with an advisory but I don't see WWE touching that and think it will be left off the forthcoming Network.

From the Ask WNW vault...

June 2010: At the end of Fatal 4 Way everybody was chanting Daniel Bryan! Do you see WWE bringing back Danielson soon? - I had a very similar question last week. Out of all of the workers that have recently been released, I think Bryan Danielson has the best chance of being brought back because of the support from the fans and the locker room. A lot of people were upset with how he was let go and the fans made their opinion very clear to WWE officials at the end of Fatal 4-Way last night. Bryan commented on the chants this morning. Read what he said at this link.

The next installment of Ask WNW is scheduled to run on Wednesday, January 15, 2014.

Remember questions that are legible stand the best chance of getting answered. Check out the Ask WNW archive at this link.

I don’t like Orton V Cena being booked backwards, It’s the ONLY major title at the minute, now they’re trying to hide it behind other matches? it should be the main event.

    • They aren’t really hiding it. It’ll be a main event on the show, it just doesn’t have to carry the buyrate as it did with the PPV last month.

      • WrestlingFan4Life

Richard, I am curious to know your thoughts on this scenario: Eventually, both belts will have to be combined into one; otherwise, the Unification match makes absolutely no sense. The writers have been slowly leading to a break-up of The Shield, with Reins apparently being groomed to become a singles wrestler. I think that the two events are going to cross paths. Roman Reins will go rogue from The Shield, challenge the champ, and win the belts. Those belts will then be combined into one, and Roman Reins will be the first to wear the new belt.

        • opie

Do you remember Ultimo Dragon and the J-Crown? Pretty sure having one guy carry two belts is entirely manageable.

          • WrestlingFan4Life

What was your name again? IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT YOUR NAME IS!!!!! My question was directed at Richard, and has nothing to do with Ultimo Dragon or the J-Crown. Or you!

          • Mysterion

Richard has also addressed how stupid your question sounds in previous Ask WNW. So stop bashing people for realising your idea is just a fan boy wishing for the world.

          • Bob’s Diner

OMG you quoted The Rock so funny hahahahahahahaha*

*sarcasm, in case you couldn’t tell

          • WrestlingFan4Life

You thought that was funny? Check this out: I know why you don’t post a picture of yourself: It’s because you look like 10 pounds of monkey crap stuffed into a 5 pound bag! Now shut the hell up before I bitch slap the taste outta your mouth!

          • Venom

Usually when a tag team or stable breaks up they tend to give them new gimmicks/personality. Right now the Sheild is kinda like a swat team. I can’t imagine any of them wearing those ring gears when they break. Probably back to tradional tights. I never saw Roman Reigns on nxt/FCW yet I’ve seen photos and he doesn’t look that intimidating like he does in the swat clothes. I dunno maybe it’s just me. Wwe has to be careful when breaking the shield since technically it would be a new gimmick for all of them. I mean dean Ambrose can still have the personality he has now but I dunno about the others.

          • Bob’s Diner

More quotes from The Rock? Oh you ARE fun!
Thanks for brightening my day 🙂

        • Bob’s Diner

          That sounds… ridiculous.

How many singles matches has Roman Reigns even had in the last year? I imagine they will try him as an actual singles wrestler before making him world champion, so even if he is successful it isn’t happening any time soon. Look at the main event right now – it is full. The guy is young and has a long career ahead of him. Ryback is proof of the bad results of hot-shotting someone into the main event scene. Be patient

        • BIG M

Even if Reins was ready for a singles run (which I don’t think he is) he wouldn’t be given “A” belt so bloody soon that’s just setting the poor bugger up to fail.

        • Mysterion

Thank God you don’t book WWE. #SuchAThingAsPushedTooSoon

      • BIG M

Isn’t the Rumble match usually the main event of the Royal Rumble PPV.
If that’s not the case this year that kinda sucks tradition wise.
I mean I wouldn’t say anything if it was a huge highly anticipated match but its Cena vs Orton for the hundredth time I not paying to see that I’m paying to see the Rumble match like most fans.

        • Mysterion

It didn’t main event last year…

          • BIG M

Well yeah because it was The Rock vs CM Punk for the title that’s a huge match.
If its a match that big than you can give tradition a pass.
But seriously mate what are you more interested in Cena vs Orton (AGAIN) or the Rumble match.

          • Bob’s Diner

I’m pretty sure it will be the main event this year. I don’t think there is nearly enough interest in Orton vs Cena part 2,762 to warrant it closing the PPV. They have barely even featured the guys on Raw the past few weeks.

          • JR Texx (Jamie)

I don’t really want to see Cena V Orton again, but it is what it is. The WWE World Heavyweight Championship, it should be on par with the Rumble.

          • John

Let’s be honest, when was the last time there was a good Royal Rumble match? Sure it’s got that nostalgia feeling to it and it’s something I always look forward too.. But it has sucked for years now.

          • Rachel Miller

In the WWE’s eyes, Cena and Orton are two of the company’s top draws.

      • JR Texx (Jamie)

Just would have thought it being the only major title, it would be up there, they could have at least add a stipulation.. even though Orton & Cena has been in every stipulation there is.

I mean they could have even added Lesnar to the match to make it interesting.

      • Rachel Miller

With Cena vs. Orton presumably closing the Royal Rumble PPV, does not mean the Rumble match will be an undercard match this year?

  • SMMN

USA plays AM Raw, which is like an edited down replay of Raw.

    • JakShowtime

Was just going to say that. Thank you sir.

  • pete

If the WWE network is going to be over the internet then how come people in the UK for example have to wait till the end of the year maybe even next year?

    • Bob’s Diner

Because they still need to sort out a lot of issues with it internationally – they expect to have 2 million people streaming their site from day one, so I’m sure you can imagine once you add international bandwidth to that it takes a lot of work.

  • Venom

I liked the ending if raw and even predicted something like this would happen especially when it was another loss in the beginning of the show. I think it would have been better if the match never happened and it turned into Bryan and the Usos attacking Bray Wyatt while Harper and Rowan are forced to watch outside or try to climb up and usos not letting them.

Now the question is was Brian pretending to be with them all the long or was he really brain washed? Cause if he was pretending then it’s like Russo wcw booking all over again where a person would take a beating or a persons finisher and turns out there on the same side kind of thing. I think it would have been cooler instead of Bryan joining them he would have lead them on and before Bray gave him the Sister Abigail Bryan could have low blowed him. That would have made more sense.

But again great ending to raw.

I do want to add that while I do think Cena should have won since he his wrestling for the title on the ppv, when they showed him beating sandow when he cashed in back in October I said this in my head…”yes kids, this is how we make new stars in the wwe, we have them win a ladder match, lose matches to make them underdogs, have them destroy the recently injured arm of there opponent then have a match with them, then have them kick out of your finisher and lose clean!”

  • Bob’s Diner

Well I am happily saying I was wrong – it looks like everything the do to try and keep Bryan down only makes him more popular. Pretty sure WWE have no choice now but to have Daniel Bryan win the Royal Rumble and go on to win the title at WrestleMania XXX. Could possibly even come off bigger than his win at SummerSlam (again, happy to be wrong about that).

    • Steve pritchard

I never thought for a minute it would bring his popularity down . If anything I thought it would make him even more popular , like we seen last night. My problem was the gimmick had no logic or reason to it when they did it. It might have worked months ago , when the authority was more involved. Now the only way to go with Bryan is up. Let’s just hope they don’t screw it up again. But I have to admit. That I could care less about seeing Bryan/orton for the hundredth time . Hope he main events mania against someone different. IMO Bryan/punk at mania would be the way to go. But we all know that’s not going to happen. But one could wish.

      • Bob’s Diner

Agree – no interest in watching Bryan and Orton go at it again. Orton’s whole reign has been uninteresting and he has seemed unmotivated for the majority of it. If Bryan wins the Royal Rumble I could certainly live with him facing Lesnar at WrestleMania – that would be something different

        • Steve pritchard

Agreed . I m with anyone but orton. Lesnar/ Bryan is a very intriguing match up . Especially with them being submission specialists . I was hoping Bryan /Punk would happen at mania . With they’re history and the fact they know each other like the back of they’re hands. I just don’t think it will happen. Just doesn’t make sense at the moment. But man that would be some good tv.

          • Bob’s Diner

Totally! Bryan VS Punk to close WrestleMania would be brilliant, but I don’t want to get my hopes up for that. With rumours they are building towards CM Punk vs HHH and with Lesnar getting a title shot after the Rumble, Lesnar vs Bryan could be a real possibility though. Maybe a triple threat with CM Punk? Bah gawd I am just getting ridiculous now…

But yes, the main point you make is bang on. Daniel Bryan vs someone not named Randy Orton will be the way to go. I’d even accept John Cena because their first match was great. And beating him twice? Who does that?

  • Christen

I remember watching Over The Edge seeing the part where Owen Hart died. It was confusing at first cause i thought it was part of the show. Until i saw the look on the crowds face and saw Owen wasn’t moving at all. I cringe watching the replay of it. If WWE Network does have Over The Edge most likely they will either have a warning on the ppv or they will cut that part and edit where they are talking about it. Most likely it will be edited because we all know if it shown Martha Hart will want to sue WWE for that.

  • WrestlingFan4Life

My wife actually called the end of the Steel Cage match the moment they announced it was going to take place as the main event on Raw. I told her there was no way Bryan would be separated from the Wyatts this soon into the storyline of his joining them; boy was I wrong. To make matters worse, I’m the wrestling fan in the family, as I’ve been watching wrestling since I was a kid. She’s just an occasional viewer; by that, I mean that she either goes to another room to watch a different program when wrestling is on, or she falls asleep on the couch within the first hour of it starting. Awkward!

Richard, I totally agree with you and the WWE on the Over The Edge 1999 PPV being neither released commercially nor aired on the WWE Network. It just wouldn’t be appropriate. I honestly do not believe the WWE Network should air any Benoit matches either, in light of the way his life ended. I respect what he did for the business, but his final acts on this earth are reprehensible. If I decide to subscribe to the WWE Network, rest assured I will not watch any Benoit matches.

  • Matt

I think they could do WWF Over the Edge PPV as it was a huge moment of professionalism in their sport. seeing Lawler and King handle the situation moved them up in my book a lot. The next night on raw, their final words before Stone Cold came to close the show makes me cry every time I look at it. It’s a horrible day in their history, but the way it was handled….fans of this generation don’t know about that. Good opportunity here…but then you have the problem of “exploiting” it in that way. Probably best to just leave it alone.

    • BIG M

If over the edge 99 were to be played on the network WWE would have hell to pay from Owen’s widow.

    • Bob’s Diner

They exploited it enough in 1999. And I don’t call continuing a show after someone died in the ring very professional – it was stupid and I am sure they regret it. I mean, they announced his death and then showed a video package where HHH attacked a casket with a sledgehammer…

I once read a review that pointed out a very disturbing thought – for the rest of the PPV you can see Owen’s blood on the mat in the corner of the ring. Think about that for a minute. No one wants to see this PPV. It was terrible and involved a terrible tragedy.

      • Venom

Either way you can actually watch the ppv on YouTube. If its still there I saw it a few years ago and it also has the part where he fell off camera and the camera is on Ross and Lawler and they describe what happened. While I agree they shouldn’t sell the DVD or show it on the network. At the same time it’s a piece of history it taught a lesson that companies went too far into try to compete against each other. The only reason he was gonna do that stunt was because of Sting doing it in wcw. Just like the only reason edge started doing the spear is because at the time Goldberg was popular and edge at the time was young and smaller and used it as a finisher.

I remember the when Owen died it was during Victoria day weekend so we went back to school on Tuesday. We discussed the current events in my home room class and my teacher was talking about the incident. Then he said “what was he even doing up there he’s a wrestler.”

  • WrestlingFan4Life

Ya know what? All of you can GO TO HELL!

    • Mysterion

Grow up you pathetic ass clown.

  • TheBigKing1

Bryan is way way over. My only criticism regarding him joining the Wyatt family, is this should’ve happened later…and not this pas Monday night. They could’ve stretched it out a little more.

  • Johnny Del Tierro

How about the Royal Rumble in 2004? Chris Benoit was in there. Will they ever air it again?
