Eric Bischoff Says He Won’t Be In TNA Much Longer, Calls Bret Hart Sad & Broken

Eric Bischoff was a guest on Inside the Ropes Radio where he responded to Bret Hart’s recent negative comments about him. Below is a detailed excerpt sent out by the show to promote the interview:

On Bret Hart’s run in WCW: I had spoken to and met Bret several times before he made the jump. I was obviously excited to have him but clearly Bret Hart was a very broken….and in my opinion still is, from the interviews I hear him do, a very sad, broken and bitter person. That was pretty evident when he first came over. He was a shadow or a shell of his former self. Wherever Bret was, the high point of his character, what I got was a kind of broken, sad shell of that and quite honestly I don’t think he’s ever come out of it.

On Bret’s recent comments saying he “knows nothing about wrestling” & calling him “an idiot”: It’s not unusual for guys like Bret Hart, from that era….the only way they know how to get over is to get over at the expense of someone else. Bret Hart’s trying very hard to stay relevant. Unfortunately, he’s no longer relevant. He was a big star, he had a big name at one point, he was an important character in the history of the business but he’s not any longer and I’m sure that’s hard on him. I know myself how it feels to realize that that your biggest and best days as a performer are behind you. I’m very comfortable with that, I’ve embraced it but it’s hard for a lot of guys who’ve never been anything other than performers. They have a hard time with that.

It’s not easy getting older in the wrestling business, believe me, when you’re surrounded by younger and younger people who in many ways aren’t as over or as skilled or as popular as you may have been or still are now. But this business is a business that’s served by youth and change. And for someone like Bret, that manifests itself in his personality, lashing out at others. It’s funny, when he came to me he hated Vince McMahon, he hated everyone in the WWE from the office to half the roster. He didn’t have a good thing to say about any of the McMahons. Then when he got the opportunity to go back and work for them, he had to shift that. Then his hatred was for someone else like Bill Goldberg for giving him a concussion and now it’s for me and for Hulk, there’s no rhyme or reason for it and as far as his opinion of my value and what I’ve achieved in the wrestling business, I’ll let my body of work and success speak for itself.

His future in TNA: I really don’t plan on being in the wrestling business too much longer and I say that in a very grateful and positive way. This business has been great for me and my family. It’s been almost 30 years. I’m still shocked to this day. My goal now isn’t to accomplish anything professionally, because I’ve kind of been there, done that. My goal now and this is gonna sound kinda corny, I really like teaching. I like watching guys like Matt Conway and Dave Lagana, watching them grow into new areas that they haven’t been able to get into before. Someday, hopefully, in the near future, I’m going to be able to walk away from this business and when I do, I want to be able to know that I was able to shape, in one way shape or form, guys who will carry on and be the future of the business.

I will say this, Bischoff is right, Bret Hart talks about a lot of people. He has his reasons, I know, but instead he could just take that time to talk about some of his favorite matches or story-lines, or funny backstage stories. Bischoff is also right in the sense that he will let his body of work speak for itself. Most of the time when we think wrestling, we think of the wrestlers. Of course we think about managers and announces too, but they are few and far in between. For Eric to be able to have longevity in a business that is not at all about longevity, does say something about him.

      announcers*

You have no clue what you’re talking about and clearly you’re a Hogan and Bischoff mark. Bret also doesn’t hate Goldberg, he forgave him a long time ago even though the man destroyed his career and almost paralyzed him. Bischoff just leeched his way into TNA with Hogan because they somehow convinced Dixie Carter they were competent enough to do a job while they weren’t. The ratings are still abysmal, it took them 3 years to get on the road, and now Bischoff’s on his way out. And as soon as Hogan’s done collecting a paycheck he will too.

        My name is not “Mark”

I hope you get that sarcasm. In no way was I taking up for either of, in fact, I am not really a fan of Hogan, Bischoff, or Bret Hart.

They haven’t accomplished half of what FANNNNDAHHHHNNNNGOOOO has in this business!

      Bischoff aka Hogan’s Enabler !!!

  • chris

This just proves Bret’s point. Bischoff IS an idiot who knows nothing of wrestling. Bret being ‘Broken and a shell of his fomer self?’ Hardly. After being politic’ed into irrellevance by Hogan for 2 years, Bret still put on one of the best matches in WCW history with Benoit. A match he practically only got through WCW because of the Owen tragedy. And funny how Bischoff accuses Bret of ‘not letting it go’, while he spends all his time catering to Hogan who hasn’t been relevant for over a decade. Last i saw Bret wasn’t on RAW every night trying to be the vocal point of the show as Hogan does in TNA. Bischoff really is clueless.

    • Cheddar

You are right about him catering to Hogan and the Hulkster trying to hog the spotlight in TNA, but I just sometimes wish Bret could let it go and be the better man.

Also, he is kind of right about Bret being a shell of his former self. Bret no longer is the best there is, best there was, or ever will be. He is still a character, but the Bret we knew that could have a 5-star match with just about anybody. Hogan is not a shell of his former self because Hulk Hogan has been doing the same thing for the past almost 40 years hahaha. Bret now cannot be what he was once, Hogan is what he always has been.

      • Cheddar

but not the Bret we knew*

I am sucking it up today on comments. Is there an edit button Richard?

      • chris

‘Hogan is still what he’s always been?’ Right.

        • Cheddar

Yeah, he has never been able to really wrestle, he just comes out and hogs the spotlight. That’s what I meant. Never have been a fan. In WCW it seemed like he only fought PPV’s and maybe 1 monday or so every now and then. that was 15 years ago. He’s still doing the same thing haha.

        • soulfool

That’s right…a Old , Feeble, Injury-Prone Waste of Space !!! Like He has-been since like 20 year’s in the making !!! He is an embarrassment to TNA , Himself , Wrestler’s and The Industry alone !!!

        • soulfool

WWE doesn’t even want him !!! The man is in serious need of a rocking chair and RETIREMENT !!! Go Lay Down , Old Man !!!

        • soulfool

Bret Hart may be bitter about what happened to him w/ The MSJ , but what He say’s about Hogan and Bischoff is undeniable !!! At least Hart doesn’t try and hog the spotlight and more money from younger talent !!!

        • soulfool

PW is in need of a colon-cleansing !!!

    • snoopy

30 years in the business and he knows nothing? Really? Ok, Lol

    • soulfool

Bischoff was only ever good in announcing jobs (AWA , early WCW) !!! He was Verne Gagne’s gopher back then , then He joined WCW when Bill Watt’s ran it…which both guy’s seemed to get along great…being they were both assholes from many wrestler’s report’s !!! Sure , Bischoff was great as the evil VP of WCW during the NWO run , but He helped run the company into the ground along w/ other egomaniac’s Hogan , Nash , Hall , etc. !!! He fired guy’s like Steve Austin , who he ironically told he would NEVER amount to anything in the industry…Boy , 3 Fold !!! He fired Jim Ross , Jesse Ventura…for supposedly sleeping on the job , the list goes on !!! Sure He had his reason’s beknownst to him and his cronies…but the fact remains…the guy in poison to the business , just as Hogan and the rest of their ilk !!! Time to Retire , Boy’s…Your service’s are NO LONGER NEEDED !!!

        Be quiet, mark.

Bischoff is an idiot, but i agree with him on so things, recently he shot up Triple H & gave him no credit as a Wrestler only because he don’t like Triple H. Since the whole hand shake with Shawn Michaels he has not sain=d one word, but before, would shoot up a storm. Its ego, Bret hs a huge ego. I remember one guy who did a peice that named his top Canadian wrestlers & Bret got a mention & Bret shot at him for that

    • snoopy

It’s amazing how internet idiots call a successful performer, excecutive producer and Hollywood producer a idiot. But that’s the world we live nowadays.
