JBL Weighs In On Brazilian Flag Incident Involving Chris Jericho

John “Bradshaw” Layfield, who knows exactly what it’s like drawing criticism at shows overseas, weighed in this morning on the Brazilian flag incident involving Chris Jericho today on his Facebook page. Below is his statement in its entirety:

After seeing reports of Chris Jericho in Brazil-it was what I suspected–Chris trying to entertain and be a heel. Apparently a Brazilian Flag comes into ring and Chris grabs it and kicks it (or something to that effect). Compare that to Sgt Slaughter burning the flag or all the crazy stuff that has gone on. This is nothing. EXCEPT we are in a new era and now that isn’t acceptable.

Chris did what most old heels would have done, he reacted and a decade ago it would have been loved for the heat. However, times change and we have to as well-Chris acknowledged this and apologized. Chris is a wonderful person and one of all time great entertainers-there was no malice here from what I see and know about Chris. A mistake was made and is being dealt with.

As far as being illegal, please, if done in an entertaining arena it is considered as such. Like saying you can prosecute Anthony Hopkins for cannibalism because of his role in ‘Silence of the Lambs’. I understand the arguements, I went through same thing in Germany and it was never considered a problem in Germany-only over the Internet and the Internet reporters. Chris’ intent was to entertain not insult anyone in Brazil or the great Brazilian fans.

Times change and for the better. Chris did what a ton of older heels would have done and he reacted. He is being punished and he apologized. He is one of all time greats and a great friend, old habits are hard to change but we must.

Times change and we have to change with it, and we all will.

There's some people who are still can't differentiate between entertainment and reality, huh? People, not everything is Jersey Shore

  • Elgato48

Didn’t jbl do a nazi walk in germany once as well. But yeah times have changed and there are things you just can’t do anymore.

    • MrHoob

Yeah, and he caught hell for it too.

  • Karl

Well said by one of all greatest heels in WWE.

  • Miles

Another example of American culture not respecting the core values of another countries culture.

    • @KyleGordon91

      He's from Winnipeg you idiot!

      • dex

        lol, perfect.

      • bruno

        Respect.

      • Hunter

        Wow, Kyle, best post ever!

  • Philip Thompson

JBL has put it very well.

  • Jake

Miles, American culture not respecting the core values? And the fact that Jericho is Canadian escapes you?

  • Toby Tyler

Lighten up Francis, I mean Miles !!

  • AnacondaVise

Good point by JBL bringing up the Sgt Slaughter stuff. People couldn't handle that in this day in age. I mean Jericho did what he is paid to do get under peoples skin.

  • Eddie Edwards

    What did JBL do?

  • H.M.

    Agree with this 100%

  • Miles

Pretty sure JBL is not Canadian , people fight and die for flags. I for one do not go around disrespecting other countries cultures, you people need to realize that there is more than just your own opinion and the rest of the world does not live by American beliefs. If that is indeed a law in Brazil then be adult enough to respect it and quit whining like little b*****s

no-one referred to JBL as Canadian, Chris jericho is Canadian. This whole thing has been blown WAY out of proportion by people who's sphincters are so tightly clenched that pretty much 99% of everything offends them in some way. I am willing to bet that the only people offended were the poleece (not a typo before it offends you).

    • Jos Nylund

He was entertaining the crowd you idiot!!! You must be lost on how to entertain a crowd and play your part!!! Chris did nothing wrong!!! He was doing exactly what he was supposed to be doing!!!! His JOB!!!

I think what Miles is forgetting is that this is ‘entertainment’ as JBL said it’d be like prosecuting an actor for playing out his role in a play or a movie!!!! People do die for their countries etc… But because Tom Hanks killed a few Nazi’s in saving private Ryan does tat mean he should be held accountable by the Germans for his actions? No didn’t think so! What Y2J did was purely an act and in character and not a reflection of the real life guy (who I’ve been lucky enough to meet) and anyone who can’t see past that must me quite moronic.

Well, I am from India and let me tell you that if Chris did that with the Indian flag, there would be politicians calling for a permanent ban on WWE in India….and they would have the public support. Its just a cultural difference. I understand that calling a black guy the "N" word is such a huge deal in the West that I can't even type the actual "N" word here….but in India kicking the flag is just a gazillion times worse than using the "N" word and I am guessing it is similar in Brazil. Thus, if WWE can't use the "N" word in USA, they can't insult flags in other countries (even though wartime movies may still have the bad guys doing such things). And as far as Jericho being Canadian, if Americans can group all Chinese, Koreans, Japanese etc as just Asians, we can group USA and Canada as just North America (which unfortunately some people shorten to America)…
