Jericho Over Wyatt, Battleground Was Weak, WWE’s Big Mistake, Cena Had To Retain

Are there any plans or future plans for Chris Jericho to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship? If not, then what’s next after his victory against Bray Wyatt at Battleground?

I was surprised that Chris Jericho was booked over Bray Wyatt at WWE Battleground but it makes sense. WWE wants to extend the program to SummerSlam and Jericho just came back, so he needed a victory to build credibility. However, that doesn’t mean there are plans to strap him as he is only working on a short-term part-time agreement. I thought Chris and Bray had a good match but I also must say that Bray’s Wyatt Family colleagues had the better bout.

What are your initial thoughts on WWE Battleground?

I will have my complete thoughts on WWE Battleground in a podcast later on Monday but to sum it up, I thought it was a weak effort. The show wasn’t predictable and there were some good matches, however, there was plenty to criticize. I’m still baffled at WWE scripting that ridiculous promo from Lana, they pulled a bush league bait and switch with Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins, AJ Lee vs. Paige looked lost and the entire night was anticlimactic. I do not judge the pay-per-views as strict now that they do not carry a hefty price tag but that doesn’t excuse WWE from trying either. It was a weak show.

What do you make of Rusev’s dominance and gimmick?

I am unhappy with the gimmick and feel WWE made a big mistake with Lana’s promo at WWE Battleground. 298 innocent people were killed when Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down. Russian President Vladimir Putin is far from innocent and to praise him — even in storyline — when his involvement is in question is ridiculous. While WWE has been known for controversial angles in the past, their commitment to restoring their public image after Benoit has been very strong. However, after their underwhelming domestic TV deal with NBCUniversal, the mass roster cuts and the embarrassing situation with Emma’s firing and rehiring, it almost feels like they aren’t even trying anymore. WWE has gone from an organized machine to showing severe dysfunction. Knowing that things between Triple H and Vince McMahon have broken down, there are major issues at present time. It was hard to enjoy Rusev’s match with Jack Swagger after Lana’s promo but it was more competitive than originally planned because Vince McMahon is happy with the babyface reception Swagger has garnered.

Has WWE forced themselves to promote John Cena as their World Heavyweight Champion?

It was the right move to put the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on John Cena at Money in the Bank and it was the right move for him to retain at Battleground. When Daniel Bryan went down, WWE had to revert to their top star to create stability. Those that wanted Roman Reigns to walk out of Battleground as WWE World Heavyweight Champion are failing to see the bigger picture. For one, there are plans to do Cena vs. Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. For Cena to be a viable threat to the man that ended Undertaker’s streak, he has to come in as strong as possible. Next, I don’t think Roman Reigns is quite ready. He will be there in time but stability is important at the current juncture.  The worst thing WWE could do for Reigns is strap him too early.

From the Ask WNW vault…

January 2013: With the IC and US titles being meaningless at this point (the titles change hands on non live TV events and haven’t had a decent storyline, champion, or meaningful title defense in a long time) in your opinion would it benefit WWE to just drop one or both all together or drop those titles in favor of a gimmick title(s) like say the Cruiserweight title or create something new? - I would be in favor of eliminating the WWE United States Championship but do not think both secondary titles should be scrapped. I am against introducing any new titles as they have a hard enough time showcasing the belts they currently have, as you mentioned. Title changes on taped shows are actually beneficial for the live audience as they maintain the illusion that “anything can happen.” It would not be wise to change a major title on tape but as long as the titles are being defended, there isn’t a scenario that’s necessarily bad.

That was my main issue with the WWE Network. They got their money 6 months in advance. Now it’s like paying the first and at month rent. They’ll load up the first and last ppv but the 4 shows in between can suck.

    • pa_vincent

Let’s not forget that the Network is only available for US citizen for the next year or so.
I live in Montreal, Qc, Canada and still have to pay 60/70$ (Depending on events) to see those PPV.

Was Battleground a total disaster? I don’t think so. We’ve seen worst.
Was it worth 60$ ? Absolutely not.

      • pa_vincent

Also, what about those fans who paid big money to sit front row?
I would’ve been dissapointed if I had paid that much to finally not see the Ambrose/Rollins match

        • Venom

I’m Canadian myself and would never pay that much for a ppv. TE only time I paid is when a group of friends split the bill for a wrestlemania.

It’s false advertising and you’d think WWE would learn their lesson after what happened last fall when Bryan beat Orton for the WWE title only to be stripped the next day and a bunch of fans contacted the ppv provider and actually got refunds.

Now as far as I know that can’t happen to US fans but I’m interested if Canadian fans who paid full price can pull this off.

          • GOR

Actually it was stupid for giving people refund for a bad ending of a match.
But having a major match canceled. That’s a very good reason for refund.

          • kurt

Its not false advertising. Every promotional poster or ad spot says the card is subject to change. They coukd be sued for that everytime a wrestler gets injured and can’t make the next booking if that was the case. It may be disappointing but it’s not false advertising

          • Venom

Yes we know it’s card subject to change, that doesn’t mean they have to abuse it. I was listening to Live Audio Wrestling after the show and they mentioned that they seemed to have been stalling a lot on the show like it wasn’t supposed to be a cancelled match. Maybe there was an injury that was not made public and they couldn’t hsve a full match. I mean they had a lot of stalling with backstage promos and such that we’re not needed.

          • Snap

Yes, the card is subject to change but that doesn’t really apply when the participants of the match are both present AND on screen at the event and at literally the last second it’s “Nope. Not gonna happen.”

It’s only excusable if, as Venom speculated, there was an undisclosed injury which required the match to be scrubbed.

          • Bob’s Diner

I didn’t watch the show – what actually happened?

          • Venom

Basically Ambrose and Rollins were at the ppv. A fight happened backstage in a segment and then Triple H kicked Ambrose out of the building since he didn’t WANT him ruining plans for tonight. Assuming Plan B after main event (remember that).

Later on in the show Seth comes to the ring and wants to be announced the winner by forfeit. It happens but Sean then comes in and they brawl. They’re separated and from a match standpoint that was it. They brawled, separated and they moved on to the next match.

Now remember Plan B. for some reason Plan B is heading to the parking lot by protective body guards, presumably to head home. Why would the MITB holder be heading home when he’s Plan B and should be waiting to cash in of Cena were to win the main event is beyond me. But he gets attacked by Ambrose.

So while he’s, card is subject to change. But they can’t abuse something like that. Especially if both wrestlers were there and brawled. Now if there is an undisclosed injury that nobody knows of we can give them a pass. I guess we’ll know if they bith wrestle in different matches tonight.

          • Bob’s Diner

            Wow… that just sounds stupid,
            Thanks for letting me know.

BTW how hilarious would it be if Lesnar defeated Cena, only for Rollins to cash in on him?

          • Venom

I think that makes the most sense if Lesner has limited dates. Personally, I think it’s the way Rollins will be champion is if Reigns wins within the year and Rollins cashes in on him.

Not to sound negative with everything I really wish Brock had beaten Cena when they fought at Extreme Rules. At least people would care about Plan C. I understand Brock beat the streak but at the end of the day Undertaker was weak and his last few wrestlemania wins always felt like a fluke. Don’t get me wrong Undertskers matches are the only WM I always look forward to even of the outcome is predictable (except this years).

Going into this summerslam Cena would look like a dope if he fears “Plan C”. He’s already beaten him before and can easily do it again. If anything it’s Brock who has to fight the odds.

          • Bob’s Diner

Yeah I think ending the streak would have meant more if Lesnar had come back as some unstoppable force, instead of losing to Cena and the H.

For some reason I keep thinking they are going to their typical plan with first time champions and have Reigns win the title from Lesnar, only for Rollins to cash in on him straight after. I’m about 50/50 on that happening at the moment. PLUS I think they will go with this being 1 a piece for Cena and Lesnar and WrestleMania will be the rubber match.

Don’t worry, John Cena won’t be scared. He’ll just pull out another random thuganomics promo for no reason. Nothing funnier than a white dude nearing 40 trying to be ‘gangsta’

            Predictions by The DIner!

          • Venom

Yeah Lesnar was practically a main event jobber and then luckily beat Undertaker. I think that was the initial shock was “wow Lesnar won a match”.

I mean say if Lesnar is champion come Summerslam and he holds the title until WrestleMania, I really don’t see Rollins cashing in until then. Either Brock will face The Rock or Reigns. I think we’ll finally see a WM MITB cash in (something we’ve never seen before) and Rollins will do it.

We all thought Dolph Ziggler would do it a few years ago but he did it the next night on RAW.

Hence, I win the debate I had with a few people last year on which Sheild will be the Shawn Michaels and I said Rollins who seems to not get much credit will.

I think all 3 will have bright futures, I can even see a triple threat match for the wwe title but Rollins was always my pick.

          • Bob’s Diner

Hmmm… good point. I def see Reigns winning the Royal Rumble, and if Lesnar still has the title then that does set up your scenario nicely. It would be one hell of a shock so I’m all for it.

I’m still hanging out for that triple threat match. Pretty sure it would be great and WWE would be foolish to not do it

          • Venom

My initial thought on a Sheild breakup would result in a triple threat. Kinda similar to legacy ending woth Orton, Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiasi Jr. In a thriple threat.

    • David Jr.

They don’t get my money 6 months in advance. I pay the 9.99 every month.

  • Ralph Hartman

It seems like the major matches for Summerslam are already set but isn’t Batista suppose to return in time for the ppv? Where does he fit in?

    • Seymour Butts

Well the build towards the show hasn’t exactly started yet so maybe he’ll return tonight, who knows?

    • Bob’s Diner

They have a while but since Guardians of the Galaxy is being released at the same time, I wouldn’t get my hopes up when it comes to seeing him anytime soon

  • Rayner Chee-bai

BattleGround was a disaster. But still, I’m glad to watch Jericho still can put a great match against Wyatt though Rollins-Ambrose is sooooooooo disappointing

    • David F

the crowd was not into the Jericho match for some reason. I give him credit for trying but it seemed like they were burned out. I hope Triple H forces Vince out for allowing that Putin promo last night. I dont think Triple H would have allowed that type of segment if he was in charge

    • K!NG

      Jericho Vs Wyatt was horrible

  • BIG M

Im more upset about so many American fans defending WWE’s decision to allow Lana’s promo than the promo itself.
They wouldn’t be doing so if it was 298 Americans on that plane instead of 36 Australian’s and over 100 Dutch that were on MH17.
I just find it very inconsiderate and Xenophobic.
This isn’t an Anti-American rant I know most people in the U.S. are not like that but So many people posting comments saying “its just kayfabe get over it “need to take a minute and think before posting something like that.

    • Nick k

To be fair they did not mention it directly and the rest of your ramble is just absurd.

    • http://www.braysballtalk.com/ Aaron Giddens

So the possibility they were referring to Crimea means nothing? In fact, another site claims to have a statement from WWE where they claim they WEREN’T referring to the plane.

  • Robert Olley

I find this a contradiction. When lana first started mentioning Putin everybody was in a uproar and you defended it as a storyline gimmick even though he was killing thousands in Kiev. But now your saying its wrong and shouldn’t happen.

    • kyleferretti

They went to far with the promo last night. That’s all there is to say. Being the event happened so recently people have it fresh on their minds.

      • Robert Olley

I just watched it and it was a bit on the line but no worse than the old promos. My feeling is american fans seem to react much more and take it much more personally because she said america was wrong for invading iraq which is a hot topic anyway. I think it was a good promo that gained massive heat which is the point. Also we still don’t know who shot down the plane only that it was flying miles off its flight plan and was shot down near the Russian and Ukrainian border so it could have been any of 4 factions.

        • Meh

Just for the record it was not “flying miles off its flight plan” It was flying over its designated flight path approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

          • monty

but USA had told everyone not to fly over that route because it was very dangerous. believe me i am not trying to defend anything but if USA is saying don’t fly over a country i would imagine others paying attention to that warning

    • kurt

Her promos were relevant when there were tensions between us and Putin, much like wrestling used Soviet wrestlers who bad mouthed the u.s and worshipped the ussr during the cold war. The difference is that he may have direct involvement in a plane being shot down and hundreds of lives lost. He has been vocal about it at the least being very insensitive towards the dead, and her promo supported his views. Big difference there. That’s why the promo should have been drastically altered. Shows complete insensitivity towards those who died in the name of trying to get cheap heat for a character. That was in very poor taste. My fiance is not a wrestling fan and when she heard lanas promo, she was astonished. Losing respect for mcmahon the longer he stays around.

    • Brandon van Reenen

      Take my upvote.

    • Snap

Yeah, other than the change in how WWE wants to be perceived, how is it any different to Sgt. Slaughter’s Iraqi-sympathizer gimmick and singing the praises of Saddam Hussein DURING the Gulf War? I know WWE likes their audience to have the memory of a goldfish but one cannot be okay and the other not.

  • Cory Zepperi

Is it possible Rollins really did tweak his knee last Monday?

  • The Spinebuster

I found the Putin “praise” absolutely disgusting considering whats happened. And I think WWE deserves negative publicity for that disgraceful decision to air that garbage

    • Nick k

Use your head for a second, what exactly does putin gain from downing a passenger airline? Start thinking for yourself instead of believing the agenda driven lies in the mainstream media.

  • Kevin

“Russian President Vladimir Putin is far from innocent and to praise him — even in storyline — when his involvement is in question is ridiculous” Richard I normally agree with you but not here what about the term innocent untill proven guilty?. The MSM has been very quick to blame Russia for the Malyasian airlines tragedy as has Obama, McCain, Kerry etc yet not one single piece of evidence proving has been found so lets look at all the possibilities it could have been a false flag or Ukraine could have shot down the plane they too have the military hardware to do so, this being a government unlected by all its people whom has tried ban the speaking of the Russian language and ignored the will of its people for pro Russian ties and 100% backed by the Western world who wish to place missiles in Ukrainian territory. If the boot was on the other foot what would we do if Russia was destabilising Canada for a military end would we stand by No. Remember JFK threatened war with the USSR for missiles in Cuba.

    • kurt

Its not just about putins involvement, its his attitude towards it. He has gone public about it, all but taking credit for it, and even if somehow he wasn’t involved (he has taken over the planes home country) his words regarding the plane and those that died were cruel.

      • Nick k

There is not a single fact in your post. You’re so beyond clueless just stop.

        • kurt

Actually your insults are false. I saw putins response myself. Not just an article, but his own words in a media video. Better research better before you throw out insults. Nice and classy. Insult someone you don’t know based on nothing. Jerk.

          • Nick k

You’re just mad because I called you out and I’m right. He hasn’t taken over the Ukraine and had not even come close to taking responsibility. You’re just spouting nonsense.

          • kurt

Citations please. I got a few…do you besides having plenty of insults? You can have a different opinion and think I am wrong without being a Jerk.

          • Nick k

You’ve insulted me twice actually so you’re contradicting yourself on top of stating false information. You’re on a roll. Please show me the proof that putin has taken over the Ukraine beyond Crimea cause that’s what you said, also show me putin admitting responsibility which you can’t. You’re embarrassing yourself

          • Kevin

Can I ask the mods why exactly was Nick’s comments deleted? I know this is a very sensitive topic but I don’t think he said anything inflammatory and was contributing to the debate with some good points.

          • K kcin

The narrative wasn’t going his way that’s all it comes down to, Richard is a great wrestling journalist however politically he needs to just stop.

          • Jesse Sherwood

Nick was attacking other members and was on his last strike for it.

          • K kcin

I called the guy clueless for stating things that weren’t true, did you ban him for calling me a jerk twice or does lying but agreeing with Richard take priority. What a joke, by the way it’s pretty easy to get back on here but that’s a real pathetic way to treat one of if not the longest running premium member on this site.

          • Nicholas

Kurt calls me a jerk twice where’s the ban?

          • Nicholas

One clueless is worse than 2 jerks because I don’t agree with Richards narrative?

          • Jesse Sherwood

You have had a track record of inflammatory posts. This is the first time I’m having to mod him. I do have a list of people who have been banned and who have been moderated excessively. You fall into the latter. Now, I have taken care of everything MOVE ON.

          • Nicholas

Well regardless of anything in the past I was banned this time for making sense and disagreeing with the owner of the site 100%. As a premium member in find that to be pathetic at best, instead of banning me and telling me to move on you should make sure you’re capable of being a moderator.

          • Venom

I don’t understand, how are you banned if you’re still posting?

          • Jesse Sherwood

There are ways I won’t get into to do it, but his last attack just put him on the permanent list. I’ve been WNW’s Community Manager for over a year, and that was completely out of line.

    • Nick k

100% this, we truly don’t know anything yet but I’m inclined to believe false flag at this time, we all know there’s a huge push for war with Russia and something like this could help get the country behind the idea. Just the way the media is pushing it makes it feel that way. It sickens me that people buy all the b.s. they’re fed.

  • eskymi

The show started great, I thought the Tag match was fantastic, then it all went down hill. Thankfully it was part of the Network cause I would hate to have paid 55 bucks for that. Of course, I wouldn’t have as I only got RR and WM in the past, so…

As for the Lana promo. Why is this a horrible thing now, yet 20 years ago in the Gulf War we had Sgt Slaughter supporting Saddam Hussein and nobody seems to get pissed at that. And there were thousands killed or wounded, soldiers and civilians.

    Just curious.

    • kyleferretti

The internet is my only answer.

      • eskymi

Good answer! Makes sense that we are more informed about what is happening, while 20 years ago we only knew what we read in the paper or heard on the news.

    • kavon

Not true, slaughter received death threats for it and had to hide out because of that gimmick

  • kyleferretti

I actually did not think the PPV was terrible. Most of the matches actually had a solid showing. I figured out why Reigns was in the main event as well – because people would have hated it without him. It was like DB at WM. the main event was actually not bad either and I heard the crowd chanting “this is awesome” for the first time in a long time with the main event (that included orton, cena, and such.) The pull of ambrose and rollins from a match was really disappointing though. It was the one match I was truly looking forward too and then.. nothing. so sad :(

    • Guest

You know the “this is awesome” chants are more like the “CM Punk” and “what” chants now right?

      • J Vomkrieg

Really? Chanting “this is awesome” when something is not awesome sounds really counter productive to me.

      • Bob’s Diner

I’m with you; fans just want to chant stuff and ‘This is Awesome’ is WAY too overused now. I’ve seen the most boring matches pull out maybe one OK spot and the crowd starts chanting it. Just means nothing nowadays

  • kurt

To me, the wrestlers seemed distracted. The behind the scenes drama , in my opinion, is affecting their in ring action. I saw blown spots by peoplr who are normally dead on sharp, especially in pay per views. People can disagree with me if they want, but I really feel like vince is more concerned with showing who is boss than putting on a quality show. He is like the bully kid who owns the football used in a game and treats people like crap when he is losing. Hr seems more concerned with “putting triple h in his place” than anything else.

  • James

If Richard ran the WWE it would be Rated G :) because he gets offended by everything.

  • Brandon van Reenen

“Vladimir Putin is far from innocent”? Now, I don’t (think) (South Africans are neutral) that Putin is necessarily a good man. But isn’t until proven guilty right? Now, I feel that the plane crash was a tragedy and no family should go through something like that, but can we go ahead and cancel “24″ while we’re at it? Maybe they should push back the premiere of “Homeland” due to the political unrest? I have a heart and I consider myself a caring individual, but to call Lana’s promo inappropriate is a bit of an overreaction I believe. It seemed completely harmless especially since they never directly said “Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 plane crash”. Crowd didn’t seem too bothered either. Just my two cents. I love America. Thanks for Burger King. :)

    • K!NG

I agree with every fiber of your statement.

      • Brandon van Reenen

Thanks man. :) I like how this whole thing is fueling a debate and seeinf how people have varying views on the current situation.

        • K kcin

Careful guys, if you state facts but disagree with Richards views you can expect a ban.

        • J Vomkrieg

As another neutral party (NZ) I also endorse your statement.

          • Brandon van Reenen

And lets keep it that way. New Zealand and South Africa are so far down south, lets hope that Putin and Obama don’t hear us bashing them. :/

  • James

Richard is deleting a lot of the people’s comments because they don’t agree with him…. How mature…. Not everyone agrees with one another If everyone had the same opinion then everything would be boring

  • James

WE LOVE YOU RICHARD!!!!!! YOU’RE JUST SO RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING AND KNOW SO MUCH MORE ABOUT THE WRESTLING BUSINESS MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE. YOU’RE GOD’S GIFT TO THE WRESTLING WORLD. I HOPE VINCE HANDS YOU CREATIVE CONTROL SO WE CAN WATCH ALL THE G RATED ACTION :)

  • ldb

I agree with richard on the Putin thing. No one said Putin is directly guilty better better judgement would be to move off that drive until the situation is resolved. I also believe Vince is regretting HHH and will soon be missing Shane o Mac. Shane has the Mc power . He can succeed at almost anything. I believe HHH has done some amazing negotiations with Ultimate Warrior and Bruno, but the booking has gone to crap whether it be due to in fighting or just bad booking. A solution is definitely needed. One last thing. This is Richards site I believe as someone called out before for stupid posts that he and the whole staff only want a good product and discussion. I personally don’t think its respectful to get on someone’s site and argue with them. Just agree to disagree.

  • packerpf

Have to strongly disagree with Richard on the predictability. Miz winning was the most predictable, followed by Rusev (most boring segment) and AJ retaining. It only made sense that the Uso’s had to win the 2 out of 3 falls but I did enjoy the match. The main title had a few great spots, but of course knew super-cena would rise to the occasion. I loved the bray vs Jericho match though.

  • BigMike

I have no issue with Swagger and Zeb getting face push; Jack has talent, but WTF are they doing with Cesaro? I am a Heyman fan, but putting them together was a mistake IMO, especially after he was PRIMED for a top face push. Swagger will not get near the face pop Cesaro could have gotten – He still gets some pop due to his ability, but this entire situation is messed up…. HHH and VKM are really dropping the ball with their own private battle when it seriously affects the product like it has

  • Evon Callaway Bitterweed Reese

As much as I like Roman Reigns I don’t want him to end up like Miz. Peak before his time. I think he’s going to great, just give him time to get there

  • monty

and that is why i truly believe shane mcmahon will be running wwe after Vince. Vince is giving/given HHH a lot of power/influence yet not many results to show for it. I just feel like shane has it in his blood and he can be the only one to run this company

    • Bob’s Diner

I can’t give you enough upvotes for this. I miss Shane and would have liked to have seen where he would have taken the company.

  • DW

I’m surprised no one seems to have a problem with the finish of the over the top IC match. I was thinking this is great…then that Miz crap was pulled. Rehashed endings for battle royals….sigh
