Complete WWE SummerSlam Kickoff Coverage – Cesaro vs. RVD, More

WWE Battleground Kickoff
From the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California
Report by Brooks Oglesby of WrestlingNewsWorld.com

Fans are shown lined up outside the Staples Center as Renee Young welcomes us to the SummerSlam Kickoff. Seated next to her are Booker T, Ric Flair & Alex Riley. Booker says someone’s going to get hurt tonight. Riley says to use the hashtag #WWEKickoff to join the discussion. Flair lets out a “Woo” and says that he’s looking forward to seeing what Randy Orton does tonight. Renee then brings up John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar and asks the panel what will happen tonight.

Booker says John Cena can usually get the job done, but tonight he’s going against the guy who broke the Streak, so he can’t call it. Riley agrees, but says this is a must-win situation for Cena. Renee then brings up Brie Bella vs. Stephanie McMahon and sets up a promo package highlight the build of the feud over the past few weeks.

Booker T says he calls this the “Shucky Ducky Quack Quack” moment of the night. He says not to sleep on Stephanie McMahon. He says Ronda Rousey is backstage – why do you think she’s here? Renee then says that Cesaro vs. Rob Van Dam is coming up soon, so she throws it to the commentators at ringside.

Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler & JBL welcome us to the show and laugh about Booker’s phrasing as Rob Van Dam makes his entrance. Cesaro comes out next as Michael Cole points out the #WWEKickoff hashtag once again, noting that it’s trending worldwide.

Rob Van Dam vs. Cesaro

They lock up and Cesaro takes control, wrenching the arm. RVD rolls out, but Cesaro throws his head to the mat. RVD whips Cesaro into the corner and sends him back out with a monkey flip. Back in a corner, RVD lands a spinning wheel kick. RVD hits the ropes, backflips over Cesaro’s back, and sends him out of the ring. RVD goes for a plancha over the top rope, but Cesaro casually walks away from where RVD lands. Cesaro turns right into a superkick from RVD. RVD then hits Rolling Thunder on the outside, poses for the fans, and sends Cesaro back into the ring. Cesaro shoves a thumb into RVD’s eye and takes control, stomping RVD into the corner. Cesaro hits a delayed gutwrench suplex and draws some heat from the crowd.

Cesaro has RVD grounded in a side headlock. RVD fights to his feet and throws Cesaro to the ropes. Cesaro counters a leapfrog attempt into an innoative backbreaker. Cesaro does RVD’s Rolling Thunder roll, except he finishes with a double stomp to RVD’s abdomen. Cesaro applies a chinlock and whips RVD. RVD counters and gains momentum with a number of clotheslines. RVD then hits a split-legged moonsault for a near-fall.  Cesaro is reeling on the apron and RVD hits a springboard kick sending Cesaro to the floor. RVD then hits a springboard backflip to Cesaro on the outside. RVD sends Cesaro into the ring and climbs to the top rope. RVD gets ready to fly but Cesaro gets up and catches him with a running European uppercut. Cesaro tries for a superplex but RVD knocks him off. Cesaro runs back, hits another European uppercut, and once again goes for a superplex. RVD once again knocks him off and Cesaro catches him with yet another European uppercut. RVD pushes him off, goes for a crossbody, but Cesaro catches him with a Very European Uppercut in midair, which gets a nearfall. Cesaro then tries the Neutralizer, but RVD flips Cesaro over his head. Cesaro lands on his feet, runs the ropes, and drops RVD with a running big boot for a two-count. Cesaro is showing signs of frustration. Cesaro slaps RVD and tries to kick him but RVD stops it and kicks Cesaro. Cesaro catches RVD’s leg on his next kick attempt, but lands his signature leg trap spinning kick. He then heads to the top rope and hits the Five-Star Frog Splash for the win.

Winner: Rob Van Dam

RVD celebrates in the ring. Meanwhile, back at the Kickoff Panel, Cesaro is standing behind the panelists, holding onto a referee. He’s yelling and pointing at the ref. He storms off and Renee Young previews the next video package, featuring the Totino’s Bold Show Us Your Superstar contest winner, “Mama’s Boy” Jake Tucker. She then welcomes Jake to the panel. Jake says it’s a pleasure to be among the panelists, and Renee asks who “Mama’s Boy” is. He says he’s the winner of the contest, and he lives with his mom, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a tough guy. He said he went to the WWE Performance Center with the New Age Outlaws and Bill DeMott and took a beating in the ring. Renee says we’ll hear more about Mama’s Boy during SummerSlam, and brings up Randy Orton vs. Roman Reigns and asks the panel who will win.

Flair says Reigns has a great future, but Randy Orton is the best performer in the world today. Booker T agrees. A promo package for Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena plays, closing out the Kickoff.

Am I the only one who hates Cesaro’s theme with the ambulance?

    • Smark Twain

      You are not alone

  • Scott

Cesaros new music sounds even worse than the last one

  • Smark Twain

The sucky part about Cesaro is he should win Match of the Year with Sami Zayn but he’s been reduced to jobber status so it might go to another match because WWE

  • Sheldon Williams

Good way to start with Hulk Hogan. I think he can get an audience going.

  • Sheldon Williams

This match should get the crowd going. Dolph has the ability to get people behind him and The Miz can make you hate him with his tactics.

  • Sheldon Williams

    Wow, what a kick!

  • ldb

Cesaro got downgraded from tornado sirens, to the european ambulance.

  • Sheldon Williams

I thought that was a good match. Didn’t expect a Ziggler victory. Nice sequence at the end.

  • Sheldon Williams

They’ve been promoting Bella vs McMahon very hard. Hope it turns out to be entertaining.

  • Sheldon Williams

Paige vs Lee has been a long building feud. I think it is hard to do that now because so many hours of wrestling weekly. Feuds use to build for awhile.

  • Sheldon Williams

Nice move by Paige! You don’t see that often. I like them using the barricade in that way instead of always throwing them into it.

  • Sheldon Williams

    Very nice dive by AJ

  • Sheldon Williams

WOW! Nice counter by Paige into a deadly DDT. Didn’t expect this title change either. Night of surprises for me so far. I enjoyed the match.

  • Sheldon Williams

WWE’s production for video packages are very outstanding. The Sting package for 2k15 is simple yet stunning.

  • Sheldon Williams

Lana does a good job in her role. She keeps the boos coming in. Nice to see the evil foreign gimmick is working.

  • Sheldon Williams

Nice entrance for Swagger. To me that is a Wrestlemania entrance happening.

  • Sheldon Williams

It’s crazy that Swagger has always been labeled an All-American but it took an evil foreigner to get him cheers.

  • Sheldon Williams

Strong clothesline! “We the People” is a catchy thing to say.

  • Sheldon Williams

I was sure Swagger would’ve won this match. Guess once I realized that they didn’t have to climb to get a flag I should’ve rethought my decision.

  • Sheldon Williams

Rusev kicked Zeb!! That’s gotta get him boos!

  • Sheldon Williams

I like the pass out instead of tap out finish but I think Austin ruined it for me. Passing out in his own blood set the bar incredibly high I think.

  • Sheldon Williams

I’m excited for the Ambrose vs Rollins feud. I just think that Reigns has unfinished business with Rollins too. He seemed to let it slide and just move on to bigger things. They were the tag champs so I would think Reigns wanted a piece of Rollins too.

  • Sheldon Williams

I like the lumberjack match idea. They’ve attacked everyone so there is no way they let them escape the ring. I just hope it ends with those two and not everyone jumping in.

  • Sheldon Williams

    BILL SIMMONS!!

  • Sheldon Williams

I like Ambrose’s logo, it has a Tony Montana feel too it to me.

  • Sheldon Williams

Haha Ambrose swinging on the lumberjacks fits his character so great.

  • Sheldon Williams

WHOA! Nice suplex to the outside

  • Sheldon Williams

Sandow isn’t in wrestling gear but he sure isn’t dressed for Cali. Haha

  • Sheldon Williams

Nice dive by Ambrose off the table. Ambrose is showing true aggression.

  • Sheldon Williams

I liked how the crowd cheered both when they were switching who was going over the rail.

  • Sheldon Williams

    AMBROSE!

  • Sheldon Williams

    Sick clothesline by Ambrose.

  • Sheldon Williams

Nice finish! Everything broke down and Rollins was smart enough to take advantage. Keeps this feud going even longer.

  • Sheldon Williams

I like how it was Goldust to stand up to Kane. I would guess they’ve been wrestling longer then anybody else at ringside.

  • Sheldon Williams

That was a good promo for their match. It felt very real.

  • Sheldon Williams

WOW! What a scene with the cell phones! That’s pretty eerie/cool.

  • Sheldon Williams

Bray gets quite a few cheers but I don’t know how his character would work as a fan favorite.

  • Sheldon Williams

    They made that look painful.

  • Sheldon Williams

I like how Bray just interacted with the crowd. I think a lot of wrestlers are missing that aspect. During the match I feel you gotta get the crowd involved. I think that is what helped The Rock become so popular.

  • Sheldon Williams

    That is a powerful slam.

  • Sheldon Williams

Getting cheers for just doing a signature pose, I think that is why it is important to work the audience into a match.

  • Sheldon Williams

Bray looks flexible enough to take the liontamer. I would love to see that move.

  • Sheldon Williams

Holy Sh!&! When he does that at the right moment, it looks very amazing! I like how Y2J reacted to it.

  • Sheldon Williams

Another good use of the barricade,Y2J’s head went straight into it!

  • Sheldon Williams

Crazy how Bray can split the crowd and he is pure evil and makes no qualms about it.

  • Sheldon Williams

Nice finish, I look forward to seeing them continue this feud. I enjoyed this match.

  • Sheldon Williams

Great camera shot by the cameraman! Bray singing that song with all the phones lit up was amazing.

  • Sheldon Williams

Another promo for Bella vs McMahon. I still hope it is entertaining. They keep mentioning Brie leaving Nikki to hang so I wonder if Nikki turns her back on Brie tonight.

  • Sheldon Williams

Steph looks god. It seems that she enjoying this moment. I’m thinking it definitely will be entertaining.

  • Sheldon Williams

    Nice arm drag by Brie

  • Sheldon Williams

So far so good in my eyes.

  • Sheldon Williams

I like how Steph mocks Bryan’s cheers. It keeps him in my mind even though he is off television.

  • Sheldon Williams

Nice counter by Steph. She’s doing great. Brie is also doing a good job.

  • Sheldon Williams

DDT! Always a great move to hit.

  • Sheldon Williams

A “You still got it” chant but I think Steph is better then she ever was.

  • Sheldon Williams

I like how she is doing the kicks to keep Bryan relevant and to get the cheers that are needed.

  • Sheldon Williams

    Nice missile dropkick by Brie!

  • Sheldon Williams

    I’m glad HHH came out

  • Sheldon Williams

Whoa! He yanked him straight out.

  • Sheldon Williams

Nice on HHH’s to allow himself to be dropkicked.

  • Sheldon Williams

And there goes Nikki turning her back to Brie.

  • Sheldon Williams

I like how Steph and HHH both look stunned. Meaning Nikki did it on her own.

  • Sheldon Williams

That was entertaining. They put on a very watchable match.

  • Sheldon Williams

Steph’s facial expressions are great. I will say when she was pretending to be hurt over being arrested was over the top, but all expressions in this match went great i think

  • Sheldon Williams

I like how Nikki didn’t celebrate with them. It leaves her options of why she hit Brie.

  • Sheldon Williams

“I don’t like his face” still a funny line. haha

  • Sheldon Williams

I’m excited about Reigns vs Orton. Should be a good test for both of them. Reigns has to keep the crowd and Orton has to show he is still a top gun.

  • Sheldon Williams

That was a great beatdown by Orton.

  • Sheldon Williams

I enjoy how Reigns still comes through the crowd. It makes him different from the other wrestlers. I think going through the crowd was a big part of DDP becoming so popular.

  • Sheldon Williams

I like how he strikes first, no wasted time.

  • Sheldon Williams

I hope that HHH and Reigns have a match. The stare down they had on Raw was awesome.

  • Sheldon Williams

Everything Orton does is to make people hate him. From his quick looks, to his moves, to his posing for the crowd, and even his smirks. That is awesome.

  • Sheldon Williams

Nice superplex! Orton does that move so effortlessly.

  • Sheldon Williams

Nice to see them trade kicks. You don’t see that to much.

  • Sheldon Williams

That drop kick is very athletic, props to him for pulling it off every time.

  • Sheldon Williams

That announce table has to hurt!

  • Sheldon Williams

2nd set of steps he’s hit too.

  • Sheldon Williams

    Super Samoan Drop!

  • Sheldon Williams

Crowd wasn’t as loud as I would expect for the superman punch

  • Sheldon Williams

But they got louder with his battle cry

  • Sheldon Williams

WOW! What a snap powerslam. That was amazing, impressive, and awe-inspiring.

  • Sheldon Williams

Orton might be a little lifeless on the mic but in the ring I see charisma.

  • Sheldon Williams

What a RKO! THAT WAS AMAZING. HE CAUGHT HIM AT THE PERFECT TIME. WOW!

  • Sheldon Williams

    punt kick
    nice reversal

  • Sheldon Williams

Aggressive spear by Reigns. Looks like it hit him hard.

  • Sheldon Williams

I wish Orton would’ve kicked out just to see these two keep going. They put on a good match. They told a great story.

  • Sheldon Williams

The announcers have helped by mention superman overcoming krpytonite. That adds to the story. I enjoyed it.

  • Sheldon Williams

What! Summerslam is leaving LA, I wouldn’t have thought it.

  • Sheldon Williams

Having a summer party in LA just makes sense, but I’m sure they’ll get a good crowd on the east coast too.

  • Sheldon Williams

Oh Sh!& they are going to give Lesnar vs Cena quite a bit of time.

  • Sheldon Williams

Brock Lesnar comes off as a a$$ho#! and for some reason I find him hilarious when he talks.

  • Sheldon Williams

Cena shows passion that is unrivaled I think. It seems like the WWE is truly his life and not a stepping stone. I respect him for that.

  • Sheldon Williams

Paul Heyman is a star without even trying to be the star. He truly knows how to grab attention.

  • Sheldon Williams

They boo the mention of Heyman’s name.

  • Sheldon Williams

Well that was odd. Lesnar was booed and Cena also had a high amount of boos.

  • Sheldon Williams

If that would’ve ended after that F-5 I would’ve disappointed big time.

  • Sheldon Williams

“I will kill you!”There is nothing PG about Brock! haha

  • Sheldon Williams

Those German’s look painful. He’s truly throwing him.

  • Sheldon Williams

It’s still odd seeing Lesnar in the WWE, because I think UFC is his calling. If he would’ve started earlier, I think he would’ve been scary dominate.

  • Sheldon Williams

That is awesome that you can hear one child chanting “Lets go Cena” and a group of adults chanting “Cena sucks”. I think that embodies John Cena’s character of never giving up and supporting the people who support him.

  • Sheldon Williams

Those are perfect Germans! Powerful and fluid. WOW

  • Sheldon Williams

I understand the “:Cena Sucks” chant but I feel that he willing to take any punishment to make the match.

  • Sheldon Williams

That was exciting. I didn’t think the AA finished him but it was a sequence that brought my attention back.

  • Sheldon Williams

HAHA at Lesnar now smiling and laughing. He’s doing his part

  • Sheldon Williams

Lesnar is getting some good cheers by being himself while Cena is starting to look beatdown.

  • Sheldon Williams

I think they are playing up Lesnar’s UFC background to get more fans. That ground and pound is not seen in a match in WWE but only brawls.

  • Sheldon Williams

Playing up Brock’s killer side and Cen’s never give up side. This is a nice play. If they let Cena tap that would be awesome.

  • Sheldon Williams

The fans are chanting “Boring” but they hate when Cena makes his comeback. I thought the people who dislike Cena would enjoy this demolishing.

  • Sheldon Williams

WOW! They are building Lesnar HARD!

  • Sheldon Williams

I was hoping for a more competitive attempt on Cena’s part but Lesnar just destroyed him.

  • Sheldon Williams

They keep saying that may be the most dominant performance in the WWE championship history but I think it is the most dominant performance. Besides backlund losing in record time to Diesel, this was truly a murder scene.

  • Sheldon Williams

TNA getting advertisment after SumerSlam for Comcast cable providers. That’s gotta be good for them. Hopefully it attracts more viewers.

  • Sheldon Williams

Overall I think this was a good show. There were 3 title changes, a good lumberjack match, a swerve from a Bella, a good encounter between the past and present, and once again a Lesnar mugging. Good Job to the WWE and all the performers.
