Ring Of Honor 8th Anniversary This Saturday Night
Written by ROH Wrestling on Feb 10, 2010 - 12:39:39 PM
- ROH Wrestling sent out the following today:
This Saturday night, February 13th, Ring of Honor will celebrate its 8th birthday in New York City at the Manhattan Center's Grand Ballroom. Philadelphia will always be home for ROH, but New York has evolved into a second home over the years, and has played host to many an anniversary celebration. Each time ROH has celebrated its birthday in the Empire State something memorable has gone down. Back in 2003 there was the infamous riot; in 2007 it was the debut of future World Champion Takeshi Morishima; 2008 gave ROH one of the finest World Title contests in company history between Nigel McGuinness and Bryan Danielson; and last year not only featured a gut-wrenching World Title match between McGuinness and KENTA, but also brought Colt Cabana back home to Ring of Honor.
Now ROH returns once more to Manhattan for our "8th Anniversary Show" with the ROH World Title on the line, the ROH World Tag Team Titles on the line, the return of a founding father, Pick 6 spots at stake, and a No Rules Grudge match that could tear apart the Grand Ballroom, amongst other things. Recent happenings have also brought some changes to the announced line-up, so here's a closer look at what brings us to this Saturday night:
ROH World Championship - There WILL Be A Winner
Austin Aries defends vs. Tyler Black
***Three ringside judges will determine the winner if the match ends in a draw. The judges will be Roderick Strong, Kenny King, and Jim Cornette***
At "Final Battle 2009", these two competitors battled for 60 minutes over the ROH World Title in what may go down as the most polarizing championship match in ROH history. Both men spilled blood, and it can be argued that both men gave it their all to hold the title, but ultimately it was Austin Aries who walked out of Manhattan with the gold. His methods were questionable; Aries spent a great deal of time trying to find ways to keep his title without actually defeating Tyler, but in all fairness, it is the challengers' job to beat the champion, not the other way around. ROH on HDNet Executive Producer Jim Cornette took exception with Aries' tactics, feeling they deprived the ROH faithful of seeing the match they deserved, and set this rematch during Episode 204 of "ROH on HDNet". Each wrestler would select a judge while ROH officials would name the third. Aries, of course, selected his right-hand man Kenny King as his judge while Roderick Strong agreed to be Tyler's judge with Tyler's assurance that Strong get first crack at the title should Tyler win. As for the final judge, Jim Cornette appointed himself, and it will fall on the shoulders of these three men to declare the winner should this match come to any conclusion save a pinfall, submission, or knockout. Will Tyler finally get the monkey off his back and fulfill the dream he's been chasing since his debut? Will Aries continue to defy his critics and prove himself "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived"? Take a look at the final comments from both men at this link. The pressure is on each man to prove himself deserving of the label "World Champion" and only two things can happen when someone is under that much pressure – you crumble under the weight, or you cut through and rise to the top.
ROH World Tag Team Championship
Jay & Mark Briscoe defend vs. The Dark City Fight Club
For several months now The Briscoes and The DCFC have been in each others' faces. Whether it be on HDNet or around the nation, these two roughneck teams have been chomping at the bit to truly tear into one another. Part of the story is told at http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/Article.aspx?id=3205, but print doesn't quite do it justice. The tension between these four men is palpable, and if the DCFC's comments in the recent Video Wire are any indication, this meeting may be little more than a street fight between four of the toughest men ever to set foot in the ROH ring. The Briscoes' have been on this stage many times before, but for Chavis and Davis, it is their first time doing battle at this level in ROH. It's their first shot at an ROH championship and on one of the biggest cards of the year no less. If that isn't pressure, than this writer doesn't know what is. But the two men from Dark City are not to be underestimated. It's doubtful any other man in Ring of Honor except the DCFC could hang toe-to-toe in a slugfest with the 6-time champions, and Chavis and Davis are certainly going to test the Briscoes' chins.
First Time Ever In Ring of Honor
Roderick Strong vs. Brian Kendrick
This match marks the return of Brian Kendrick, an ROH founding father, after an extended absence as well an opportunity for Roderick Strong to redeem his loss the last time ROH visited NYC in December. That's just the surface, however, and as we dig deeper we find that there's certainly more there. Strong declared several months ago that he would be ROH World Champion in 2010 and Roderick has certainly proven he has what it takes to make that declaration a reality. Aside from his loss at "Final Battle 2009" to Kenny King, Roderick closed out the year in strong fashion with victories over Tyler Black and Kenny Omega, and began 2010 with a win over Delirious in Los Angeles. Beating one of the men who helped put ROH on the map would certainly propel him closer to that title opportunity his "Pick 6" ranking allows him to request. The pressure on Roderick Strong to finally fulfill his promise in 2010 really begins now. As for Kendrick, the pressure is certainly there but in a whole other fashion. It has been so long since he has competed in the ROH ring, but the memories of the ROH fans are long. They have clamored for Brian's return for quite some time, and they want to see if "he's still got it", if only for just one New York night. Can Strong build an even stronger case for a shot at gold, or will Kendrick enter the Pick 6 himself and shake up the entire system?

Grudge Match
Kevin Steen vs. Colt Cabana
"I don't think we even need to talk in New York, Kevin." Those words from Colt Cabana, combined with the actions of Kevin Steen over the last few months, ROH officials have decided that it was time to bring this issue to the center of the ring. Ever since "Final Battle 2009", Cabana has tried to play peacemaker between Kevin Steen and El Generico. He has tried to bridge the rift between the former ROH World Tag champs to no avail, and Colt has taken it upon himself to try and bring Generico out of the depression he's been experiencing since December. In recent weeks, Colt's efforts seemed to begin to pay off, primarily in Los Angeles when he and Generico teamed up to beat the impressive Scott Lost and Scorpio Sky, but Generico was eliminated in the first round of the TV Title tournament which may amount to a "one-step-forward-but-two-steps-back" situation. Cabana, as seen in this week's Video Wire, tried to confront Kevin once and for all, and the results were clear. Steen's feelings and his anger are bordering on irrational and now he and Cabana have no option but to attempt to settle their differences inside the squared circle. But where does Steve Corino stand in all this? Where is Generico's head in all of this chaos? That may be the deciding factor in this equation, and that may be more pressure than the "Generic Luchador" can handle, especially considering...
Special Challenge Match
El Generico vs. Davey Richards with Shane Hagadorn
Two months ago El Generico's world fell apart in the middle of the Grand Ballroom. Two months ago Davey Richards lost his prized ROH World Tag Team Championship in the middle of the Grand Ballroom. At the end of that cold December night, both men found their reality drastically different than when they started their respective days. Now both men return to the scene of the crime for very different reasons. Davey stands in contention to be crowned the first ever ROH World Television Champion in March while Generico has been knocked out of that tournament and continues to try and find his way back to normalcy with some assistance from Colt Cabana. This match was made in the hopes that it would hopefully push Generico back into fighting shape, thinking competition would right his ship, while Richards simply sees this match as an opportunity to once more hurt someone he has always taken great pleasure in hurting. Davey isn't one to lose focus, despite the pressures of the impending TV Title tournament Semi-Finals in March, but Generico's focus has been gone since "Final Battle 2009", so it's hard to imagine he will be alright considering what may be going down between his former best friend, Kevin Steen, and Colt Cabana on February 13.
Grudge Tag Team Match - NO RULES
The Necro Butcher/Eddie Kingston vs. Erick Stevens/Joey Ryan with Prince Nana
Two paths converged on HDNet over the last several weeks as Prince Nana's war against The Necro Butcher expanded to take out Eddie Kingston and has since brought the two brawlers together. The story unfolded at this link, but in the time since that article was written, ROH officials have declared that this war will be waged with NO RULES in attempts to settle this matter before it continues to escalate. In the recent ROH Video Wire, Necro also declared he would bring along his 76-year-old mentor, Gypsy Joe, to counterbalance things should the Prince attempt to get involved in this war. NYC has seen some intense fights over the years, but with three men the likes of Kingston, Necro, and Gypsy Joe on the same page, this may bring violence on a scale not seen in quite some time. Prince Nana may well have bitten off more than he can chew this time.
Four Corner Survival - Pick 6 spot at risk
(4) Kenny King vs. Rasche Brown vs. Delirious vs. Steve Corino
Originally scheduled to include Chris Hero, ROH officials shifted Steve Corino into this match after his recent boasts of retiring the Human Tornado and bragging about how he would get paid for a night off in Manhattan. Now he'll have to face three men instead of one. Ironically, Corino should probably thank ROH officials now because he, along with Delirious and the dominating force known as "Skullkrusher" Rasche Brown, have the opportunity to get into title contention with a single victory. It was at "Final Battle 2009" when Kenny King pinned Roderick Strong to take the #4 slot in the Pick 6 ranking, and King has been looked upon as a roadblock to anyone looking to get a shot at Austin Aries' ROH World Title. Delirious, ever since getting bumped out of the rankings, has been hot to get back into contention. Corino has had World Title shots in the past and, despite his bragging about a night off, must salivate at the possibility of getting another chance. Rasche Brown hasn't had that opportunity yet, but his impressive power and agility would be an immediate threat to any champion should Brown get the nod. Kenny King will certainly have his work cut out for him Saturday night, and he's still got a chance to become TV champion on the horizon...
The Kings of Wrestling in Action!!!
Chris Hero contacted ROH officials late Tuesday night with the news that Claudio Castagnoli would be coming to Manhattan alongside Hero, and demanded that the Kings of Wrestling be allowed to compete in a tag team match to "demonstrate the dominance they asserted on Pro Wrestling NOAH, and show the Briscoes what's in store for them in Charlotte." In light of Castagnoli's sudden availability, ROH officials decided to honor Hero's request and pull him from the Four Corner Survival. Now the KoW will take part in tag team action as they continue to push for their shot at the ROH World Tag Team Titles.
Ring of Honor's "8th Anniversary Show" has all the potential to be as memorable as the seven that came before it so make sure you don't miss your opportunity to see the greatest pound-for-pound wrestling anywhere. Limited tickets are available at www.rohwrestling.com, and will be available at the door this Saturday night, February 13th, at the Manhattan Center in New York City, NY. With so many issues on the burner, a cold night in New York City is sure to get a lot hotter once the bell rings. Don't miss out!
