Get To Know Matt Andrews

Matt Andrews, also known as “The Choice”, is the current Smackdown! blog writer for Wrestling News World. He is a graduate of the University of North Texas with a B.A. in Theatre Arts and is currently putting those skills to use in the ring (more on that later). He was born (and is listed as from) Albany, New York, but has been in Texas practically his entire life. For those of you wondering, no, he doesn’t wear cowboy hats, Wranglers, boots, or ride horses. He lives in the suburbs, drives a Toyota, and yes, he has a dog, but it’s a Mini Dachshund. He’s currently a shoe salesman at Nordstrom’s…but he would REALLY, REALLY like to not be doing that.

The first match that Andrews watched was on the original WWF Superstars on Saturday morning, as the 1-2-3 Kid battled “The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels. He was young (9) and naïve to the wrestling business and was hooked by Michaels’ flashy personality and acrobatics. The following night was the PPV “In Your House: Good Friends Better Enemies” featuring the above mentioned HBK facing off against his former bodyguard “Big Daddy Cool” Diesel. His love for wrestling was intensified immensely once Michaels nailed Sweet Chin Music. Andrews did not realize that this would be Diesel’s final match in the WWF for quite some time. He owned a toy wrestling ring, several action figures (including the only one he still owns, an unopened Blue Blazer figure), and would constantly hold matches on top of his parents’ bed with the body length pillows. As much as he enjoyed WWF, he became enthralled with the cruiserweight division of WCW. He started his wrestling journalism by making a newsletter detailing WCW Saturday Night that NOBODY read. Once college hit, he took a hiatus from wrestling, as school and a job became more of a priority.

Andrews first became acquainted with Wrestling News World in the fall of 2007, around the same time he started watching wrestling again. The big feud at the time was Batista versus The Undertaker, and he’s been watching ever since. Having always had a flair for words, he jumped at the chance to write for WNW when the Smackdown position opened.

Now for what you all may (or may not) want to read. Matt Andrews started training to wrestle in the summer of 2009. He was on Craig’s List, looking for acting gigs, and a notice for a brand spanking new wrestling promotion called Metroplex Wrestling showed up. Knowing he would never have the stature to become a wrestler (he’s 5’9 ½” and a paltry 170 pounds), he applied to be MPX’ Ring Announcer. Once he got to the ring to meet up with the wrestlers that were around then, the 15 year dream of being inside a wrestling ring started to fill his eyes. It was discovered that this skinny kid from Albany could actually go in the ring, and the search for another ring announcer was on. “The Choice” Matt Andrews was born. Metroplex Wrestling put on its first show in Fort Worth, Texas in April of 2010, and has since moved to Bedford where we hold shows on a monthly basis. We have a steady roster of people who are constantly training to be better in-ring psychologists, as well as a rotating list of well-known and well-respected names on the Texas Independent Circuit. Andrews captured the Metroplex Wrestling Championship in December of 2010 in an 8-man, two-team ladder match, where he turned on the team that propelled him to the top (Genesis), and became an even bigger jerk than he was before. His reign came to an end at 6-months when he lost to “The Headbanger” Gregory James. Life in the wrestling world is both exhilarating and amazing, and Matt Andrews definitely made the right CHOICE by stepping into a wrestling ring.
