"Superstar" Billy Graham Blasts CM Punk's Latest Raw Promo

WWE Hall of Famer Billy Graham had a lot to say about CM Punk's promo last Monday on WWE Raw, in which he verbally attacked Bruno Sammartino and his record title reign. The release, posted to his Facebook page, is below:

I watch the last hour of WWE Raw last night. It was the worst excuse for a show I have ever seen! My agent Scott is tight with legendary World Champion Bruno Sammartino. Scott has told me that WWE has been calling Brunno regularly begging him to go into the Hall of Fame. Bruno has been polite but has always said no thank you.

Tonight on RAW for the last 45 minutes of the show all they did was have CM PUNK talk, talk and more talk! The killer line came when Vince had Punk putting over his 314 straight days as world champ and then said and I quote, " you had people like Burno Sammartino , only wrestled in Madison Square Garden only wrestled one a month.”

This was by far the biggest put down of Bruno ever. Why would WWE have Punk say that about someone they have been begging to go into the Hall of Fame for untold years? When that teenager looking CM Punk made that statement he was also talking about me, Ivan Kolloff , Stan Hanson etc. Find the re run and listen closely and answer me this my Facebook friends - How can they justify putting down a real icon like this, and not get called out on it?

Any news sites can quote me on my statement below:

CM Punk, I have lost all respect for you for nor saying no to the writers of the WWE for saying Bruno Sammartino only wrestled once a month in Madison Square Garden. You talk about one of the greatest icons ever in pro wrestling like he was a JOBBER??? You should be ashamed of yourself for not having the self-dignity to say NO to the writers on that line. That line you delivered indicates that I am a big loser like Bruno as well and insults me as I wrestled in the same era as Bruno. This only confirms more that I want my name out of the WWE Hall of Fame.

How many monthly sell outs have you yourself drawn at Madison Square Garden? Not a PPV or the Raw TV show. Quit talking trash about Bruno. It’s an insult to him and all the wrestlers of his era including myself!

Some within the business have already responded to Graham, including Chris Jericho & Paul Heyman:

  • I don’t mean to insult but it kind of irritates me that Richard Gray buries other wrestling news sites for being inferior but yet it takes hours to post a interesting story that other wrestling websites posted hours ago.

    • I don’t mean to insult but it kind of irritates me when trolls come here just to spew hate. I saw this come across but I was too busy compiling exclusive notes you’re not going to find on a copy/paste NEWZ site. Billy Graham hasn’t been relevant in years and while Brooks did a great job compiling this, what happened at this week’s TVs is much more important to me than someone trying to get over to work marks such as yourself. Good day.

      • I don’t even know why you think I’m trolling. I read WNW and plenty of other wrestling websites everyday. I just like to get the news as fast as I can. I bring up a legitimate concern and then you call me a mark. Wow.

        • I’ll be addressing this in today’s Mailbag. Other than that I have no further comment.

          • Guest

I have to pay to get a real explanation? No thanks. I will continue to browse your website using Adblock. Have a good day.

        • Batman

I know. Very classy way to overreact to someone. He’s clearly a mark for himself and his site. How dare you not be sycophantic!

      • Michael

Lol Richard told you, you mark. Why would Richard put his word at stake and run a story that other sites are running just cause you want him to when if it comes out that the story or quote wasn’t true then he’ll look stupid and won’t be credible anymore. Kerry you are a dumb mark don’t come on here disrespecting Richard everything I’ve every read from this site has been 100% true so you stay off here and on the other lame sites.

I guess Punk is doing his job. Pissing off another wrestler even. Damn. I guess this heel thing is second nature to Punk. Give me a break Billy. The Business has changed since you left.

  • The Breaker

Jericho said it best. Heyman was great too. CM Punk knows exactly how to get under people’s skin, and that is why he is such a great heel. His promo Monday was part worked shoot, but the comments about Bruno employed the tried-and-true heel tactic of taking the smallest element of truth and spinning it in the most infuriating way.

  • Kenneth

Has anyone told Superstar BG that Punk’s a heel?
Is he still aware that Punk’s job as a heel is to wind up the public and make them hate him for the things he says and does?
Seems like Punk’s doing his job to perfection if even a rugged veteran of the industry like Superstar BG marks out on Farcebook.
As for insulting Sammartino, the WWE have asked Sammartino for years to join their HoF and he keeps turning them down, and that’s his choice to make. Bruno is the master of his own legacy, but Vince is the master of the way that legacy is recorded. If Bruno doesn’t swallow whatever matter of stubborn pride he has and work with Vince on Vince’s terms then Bruno’s legacy won’t mean shit in the future. How can a legacy mean anything if no one knows about it?
Sure, there’s other, more legitimate Halls of Fame out there, but how many of them are associated with the same media titan that happens to be the pinnacle of the industry? Die-hard dedicated fans will still know him and what he was about, if they do their research properly, but the casual fan won’t have a clue. If Bruno’s fine with that then that’s cool. If he wants to be remembered then he needs to suck it up.

I love Chris Jericho, that is all.

  • Michael

I agree with what Punk said wrestlers back in the hey days wrestled like once or twice a month. They had some nice long one or two hour wrestling matches but nothing compered to the schedule and match types that the wrestlers wrestle in today. They didn’t have tlc, hiac, tables, chairs, ladders, or thumb tacks. These wrestlers today are on the road 345 days a year doing TV, ppv, and live along with promotional stuff the wrestlers in Bruno era didn’t have to do all of tatty which is why they held the title for so long. Superstar you’ve been marked.

    • Kenneth

Exactly. When you take all that into account for one person, whoever it is, to hold a title for so long today means far more than one person holding that title several decades ago.
When I say this I know that it’s all scripted, yadda yadda yadda, and I say this only as a fan not as a mark.
Title reigns are usually ranked by years. I’d like to see someone scour the history books and rank the reigns by successful title defences, thus taking match frequency over the time period into account and levelling the playing field somewhat. That would include house shows and everything else. It would be a more valid comparison in my eyes and I’d be interested to see who came out on top.
Interested, yes, but not interested enough to do it myself. It would be cool to see though.

  • Dangerous Lee

Hmm…I see all the CM Punk haters on this site have suddenly gone into hiding.

  • _JIM_

lol… As long as I get it at some point who cares how fast we get info like this? It’s not like this was some major ground breaking news story that effects everybody in the world like a declaration of war or something. It’s just a story that has to do with the entertainment industry. So why would someone actually complain that it wasn’t posted fast enough? Priorities people!! Besides that it’s just another grumpy HOF’er who like so many of his generation just doesn’t seem to get that the business has changed with the times, and for the better I might add. Punk delivered a heel promo that did exactly what it was supposed to do, which is generate a reaction from the fans. Fans are smarter now than they were in your day Mr. Graham, and they know that what they are seeing isn’t real. Today’s performers don’t have the luxury of having kayfabe to fall back on to get over and to get the desired reaction. So sometimes they have to push things further on the mic than what your generation did. Besides that, CM Punk is an employee that was doing what his employers asked of him. He may or may not agree with what he was told to say, but being told to do something by your employer is something everyone can understand.

  • Rayner Chee-bai

Because, Mr. Graham; Punk is a heel and his job is to piss you off.

  • I think Superstar is forgetting how to be a successful heel. Glad CM Punk knows.
