The Smackdown Breakdown - So Long 2015

Welcome Wrestling News World readers to the final edition of the Smackdown Breakdown for 2015, before Smackdown moves to the USA Network on a new day from January 2016. To say it's been a bit of an up and down year in WWE booking wise and content wise is probably a little bit of an understatement, but I think there were glimpses of a continued improvement on Monday night. Alright most of it was the Slammy's, and don't even get me started on some of the award winners (how people voted Kalisto as the OMG Moment of the year over Seth Rollins, or Nikki Bella as Diva of the Year over Paige I will never know), but now we can start gearing up on the road to the Royal Rumble and the road to Wrestlemania 32.

Another plug for my final 2015 interview edition of the Podcast Corner before we get on with the breakdown. You can hear me interview Insane Championship Wrestling' Dickie Divers. In this interview I talk with Dickie about how he got into the world of wrestling, his wrestling memories, getting into the world of ICW, being a part of the first ever ICW Tag Team Champions as part of the STI with William Grange, winning and losing the square go briefcase, what's been keeping him out of action and more! You also get to hear preview clips of upcoming interviews in January 2016 featuring New Generation Wrestling owner Rich Dunn, and with Insane Championship Wrestling star and New Age Kliq leader Chris Renfrew.

You can check out the podcast, as well as other episodes including conversations with WWE Hall of Famer Tito Santana, former WWE star Dan Spivey, the father of WWE Diva Paige, Ricky Knight, my homies Kevin Gill and Rude Boy, JR Kratos, Jeff Cobb, Stevie Boy and a host of other great wrestling talent from around the world by clicking here.

Now let's head on into this weeks edition of the Smackdown Breakdown and see what went down in what will be the final edition for 2015.

The New Day vs. The Lucha Dragons - 4 Stars

Straight into Smackdown and we kick off with some tag team action! First out, the REAL tag team of the year and your Tag Team Champions, New Day! Followed by the Lucha Dragons, with Kalisto holding that OMG Moment of the Year Slammy. These two teams were part of that amazing match at TLC and haven't shown any signs of slowing down. I was entertained by both teams in this one and they all put together some great sequences in this match. Kalisto and Sin Cara were like a house on fire at times in terms of offence but New Day had that strength and power advantage in Big E that gave the champions the advantage. Some great teamwork by New Day in this one and some innovative offence for the Lucha Dragons, including their high flying and fast paced style made this a great way to kick off the show, which saw the New Day pick up the win to end 2015 on a high and remain the WWE Tag Team Champions.

The Wyatt Family vs. Ryback, Kane and The Dudley Boyz - 3.5 Stars

After the war these men went through on Monday it seems only fitting to let them continue their brawl in the final show of 2015. According to my five year old son Bray Wyatt ruined Christmas, although I'm not sure exactly what he did yet to ruin Christmas. The Wyatt's continue to look great as a team, showing some excellent team work during this one and making their opponents look strong at the same time. Saying that though I felt maybe Kane, the Dudley’s and Ryback didn't do enough for me to believe they stood a chance of winning this one. I'm not saying they were poor but I need to believe they can win, rather than just know before the bell rings the outcome. As I expected it was the Wyatt's who picked up the win in this one, dominating their opponents at the end of this match to leave me wondering just how big the group can become during 2016.

The Uso’s vs. Rusev and Alberto Del Rio - 3.75 Stars

After the way the League of Nations assaulted the Uso's this past week on Raw this match was begging to go down. The deck was always stacked against the Uso's with King Barrett and Sheamus ringside, but at least they had their Slammy awards for backup! This was a brawl right from the opening bell, with both teams out to prove a point as to who was the most dominant. The Uso's continued to show why they were worthy winners of that tag team of the year Slammy, while the League of Nations showed why they should never be taken lightly by dominating with their strength and skill advantage. This one was too close to call in terms of a winner but in the end it was the numbers advantage that won out with the League of Nations picking up the win over the tag team of the year. Sadly for the League of Nations they wouldn't stand tall as Roman Reigns would save The Uso's from being made an example of. A good match that I enjoyed watching that had a great conclusion.

Neville and Titus O’Neil vs. The Ascension - 3.75 Stars

I never realised until now just how much Neville actually looks like an elf when he was wearing that hat with ears on. It seems Stardust and The Ascension wanted to ruin Christmas, and they came close to ruining Santino's plans. However his elves were on standby to save Santino's Christmas dreams. It was great to see Santino back on screen. His comedic talent is missed at times like this. From the opening bell Neville showed why he deserved that breakout star of the year Slammy, as he took it to the Ascension early on and used his high flying talent during the match to gain an advantage. The Ascension soon took over though, asserting their strength and dominance. That was until Titus got in on the action and the odds were evened up. Santino's elves not only saved him from an assault during this one but they also won the match and saved Christmas for Santino. A good and entertaining match.

Brie Bella vs. Charlotte - 3.75 Stars

So, Charlotte....Is she trying too hard to be like her dad? It seems that way to me. What was nice was not to see Ric at ringside for this one to take that distraction away. I enjoy the work of both of these Divas and thought they put on a great match. Charlotte dominated early on, and while Brie showed glimpses of a comeback there was never any doubt Charlotte would pick up the win. Team B.A.D. graced us with their presence to go after Becky Lynch. Once again it was a controversial win for the Divas Champion, who made the choice not to save her friend Becky Lynch from Team B.A.D.'s beat down which further raises questions about Charlotte's friendship and motives toward Becky. A good match that leave us with more questions headed into 2016.

Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens vs. Dolph Ziggler - 5 Stars

So here's the final match of 2015 on Smackdown. A match that was built up last week following a Super kick by Dolph to Ambrose after his match with Kevin Owens. Things continued to heat up as Ziggler and Owens brawled on Raw and later faced off in a match. So it only seems right these two face off in the final Smackdown match of the year. Less than 24 hours after beating Sheamus in a steel cage, and needing six staples to a head wound Dean Ambrose showed no signs of fatigue, with all three men going after each other from the opening bell and not throwing caution to the wind. The action spilled out the ring very quickly and the Christmas presents and trees at the top of the ramp soon became involved, with Ziggler, Ambrose and then Owens each getting up close and personal to them. The action soon returned to the ring where the pace and the risks didn't slow down. In the end it was Ambrose who picked up a hard fought win. A great match to end Smackdown for 2015.

Overall Show Rating - 4 Stars

This weeks edition of Smackdown was a great blend of action and backstage segments. I felt the show ended 2015 on another high note for WWE and certainly brings us signs of promise headed into 2016. My favourite segment this week without question the main event. Ambrose, Ziggler and Owens gave it their all in this one and gave us one heck of an amazing match to end 2015 on. The match could not have been any better so that's why I'm giving it a 5 star rating for the effort all three of these men put into the match. If they can carry on that kind of momentum then these three are going to be toward the top of the card by the end of 2016.

That wraps it up for another edition of the Smackdown Breakdown. Please come back again in January 2016 for another edition. If you have any comments about this weeks Breakdown or Smackdown itself then please leave your comments in the discussion area below. Thanks for reading and I will catch you back here again next year. On behalf of everyone here at WNW, we wish you a booty Christmas and a happy New Day!
