I was not sure what I wanted to write about here. I did as I said I was going to, and I stepped away from my computer for a couple hours today, separating myself from writing and wrestling so I could come into Impact fresh and excited. At first I was thinking I was going to write about sex. Yes, I said sex. I just find it interesting that two legendary wrestlers attached to one wrestling company have had their sexuality put out there for all to know about. With Hogan it was the video (the GQ write up was too much info for me), now Flair 4th wife is making claims of infidelity, and possibly other things – I’m not looking too closely. I’m also not planning on stating any opinions on the matter, as it’s their private lives. The only thing I am going to wonder is if this is a product of the industry of the time.
Wait, what, EY re-signed with TNA? Is he a glutton for punishment? I will admit that I was bummed at the thought that EY wouldn’t be wrestling on TV and that I’d only get to see him on his fishing shot – it’s funny, but not my favorite show. I really hope EY is getting more money for his work in TNA, he absolutely deserves it. I hope he’s part of the TNA group that ultimately bands together to take out A&8’s.
Dixie’s post on Twitter about someone big returning tonight was a very smart move. I haven’t been impressed with much Dixie has said on social media, in fact she has made more of a joke of herself than anything in the past with some of her comments, and promising to answer any questions from fans, but only taking the questions that she likes answering, and put her and Impact in the best light.
I watched Jeff Hardy on Ink Master when it aired on Tuesday. I have to say I was expecting more from Hardy, and thought he came off a bit whiny. He knew he was getting a tattoo on his lower leg, but the most he said was complaining about having to move this way and that way for Jesse to be able to work. On the other hand, I really didn’t like the tattoo he got. It was a well executed tattoo, just not my style, and I didn’t think it suited Hardy or looked good on his leg. Either way, I’m guessing that Hardy made a solid chunk of cash for that crossover to Ink Master.
Pre-Impact Commercial > B
Money talks and bullshit walks? I didn’t know you could say bullshit on TV, even cable TV. I have no clue what Roode was talking about in this commercial, but he was well spoken and came off pretty strong.
Video > C
So, Angle, Aries, and Brooke’s relationship with Bully are the most important things to focus on? I find the direction TNA takes these videos to be quite intriguing. Since Final Resolution is this weekend, it makes me wonder about this go home to the PPV.
In Ring Segment > B+
Fortune? Where’s Flair? I will say that Roode did a great job of riling up the fans in the Zone. They were hot right off the bat, something we’ve not seen in quite a while. Sadly Kaz was barely a warm up for Roode, but then Daniels took the mic and continued what Roode started. The fans wanted nothing but AJ from the moment Daniels opened his mouth, and AJ gave them what they wanted. It was silly for AJ to attack Daniels with the other two in the ring, but they needed a reason for him to be rescued by his partners in the main event. The thing I want to see is Hardy rushing to the ring to help someone with only part of his face painted! Make it look a little more realistic and spontaneous.
Video > D-
We already saw Aries making derisive comments about Brooke in the opening segment, so why again? Ugh!
Backstage Segment > D
Aries facing Bully again? Yes, they’re good in the ring together, but it feels as though A&8’s is being pushed aside for the regular roster. So much for A&8’s being involved at every turn, making everyone in TNA pay. So while Aries was good here, it feels like we were back tracking to a feud that we watched eight months ago. And then there’s the fact that it’s less than a week before FR, and they’re making what is a fairly big match. So Aries was really solid here, but everything he said and set up sucked.
TV Title Match – Joe (c) vs Devon > B
Devon came to the ring already drenched in sweat, and he was in the ring in long pants, long sleeves, a flannel with ripped off sleeves, that leather vest and gloves! Of course the man is sweating, I’m sweating just looking at him. But then the ring work between the two. Joe is always great in the ring, Devon is one who has always been a consummate professional, so with decent booking these two will always give a great match. Heck, these are two who could take piss poor booking and make it look good.
Crap, I’d been hoping that they weren’t going to bring in a group of bimbos to join A&8’s. I thought that maybe Brooke could be part of the group, but in a business way, not as a bimbo. But now that they brought in distractions by way of boobs, TNA’s roster is in even more trouble. What a cruddy way to end this solid match, but that’s TNA for you. Hopefully this isn’t the last time we see Joe for another six months!
Winner – Devon (3:56)
Backstage Segment > C+
Brooke talking to Velvet Sky? Had to be. Not that Brooke was great, but she wasn’t back, most of it is that I’m thrilled to see Velvet back!
Backstage Segment > B+
Snow is back? D-Lo slipped him a Mickie Finn? Interesting turn of events. I was worried, but I think this works.
In Ring Segment > A
Mickie’s never been the best on mic, but she wasn’t too bad here. Tara being delusional about the fans cheering her made me giggle.
When Velvet’s music hit, the fans looked shocked. I thought it was pretty well known that Velvet was returning to TNA, and soon, even before Dixie teased it earlier on Twitter. I won’t say that Velvet’s promo was the best, but it was good, and dang she looked HOT! Being me, and my tweak about clothing and design, I could say that her lipstick color doesn’t work for her, but I don’t really care because I’m so happy to see her back. I’m wondering if the booking of the Knockouts Title Match at FR will change now that Velvet has been officially re-signed. Will Mickie get screwed out of a Knockouts Title win?
Backstage Segment > B+
Stacy and I were left laughing aloud at Robbie E. T was good too, but E was kick butt! I keep saying he’s better than he’s shown us on TV, and this proves it. E has personality (though he was really vacant to talk to in person), and he handled this wonderfully. I won’t say that E and T will be the new DX with the cheap sales pitches backstage, but this was solid!
Chavito & Hernandez vs Robbie E & Robbie T > B
Taz calling T the IT guy made me shake my head. I can’t comment on his smarts, but T’s character has never been the brightest bulb in the box. Honestly, I have to say it’s about time T and E actually work as a tag team. They’ve been running together for so long, you’d have thought they’d have done here sooner.
Finally, a decent match for Robbie E! He looked really solid working with both Hernandez and Chavito. T didn’t look bad, but he’s just all muscle with a few moves. All in all, this was a much better match than I thought it would be, much better match than I thought we’d ever see the Robbies booked in.
Winners – Hernandez & Chavito (3:52)
In Ring Segment > C
I know this is Ryan’s character, but he does nothing for me – though a solid way to set up for their match at FR. It will be interesting to see how much of the work Ryan does at FR.
Backstage Segment > B-
Money talks and bullshit walks? So, has A&8’s been contracted to attack Hardy, or all three faces in the main event?
Video > B
Wes really touched me last week in his emotion in the ring. That was a solid moment that I’m not upset about seeing again.
Backstage Segment > B
It just kills me that Wes had to go through Gut Check, but Garett was put on the roster because he’s a Bisch. I know each character needs a storyline, but it’s so wrong that Wes had to go about it in the way he did. Then again, I still fully believe he’s part of A&8’s, so hopefully they’re building for something big with him.
Backstage Segment > B+
Why was the camera looking up at Chavito and Hernandez? Another new experiment with the camera? Not sure I like it, but I don’t hate it either. I think as strong as Chavito is on mic, it makes up for other flaws in the way things are done with camera angles and stuff like that.
Angle vs DOC > B
The way A&8’s come through the crowd, from the opposite side of the arena, makes me think of the days before Hogan when the heels came from one side of the arena, faces from the other. But I don’t understand why this is on Impact and not saved for FR.
The way Angle was working over DOC’s lower leg was intriguing. It really showed the finesse Angle works with compared to DOC’s clotheslines. I enjoyed the back and forth between them, both working their strengths, until I questioned whether DOC possibly pooped his pants. DOC, before Angle started with his first set of Germans, had a dark spot on the bum of his jeans. Just saying!
As this match went along, it seemed as though DOC was getting sloppier and sloppier. I was cringing each time Angle took a bump. I was actually glad to see A&8’s come out to stop this one, which is a bummer because it started so strong. But, really, did DOC have a potty accident in the ring?
Winner – N/A (5:39)
In Ring Segment > B
I loved the way Wes and Garett came out to save Angle, but the way Joe plowed through them was great! Even after all these years, Angle’s ‘It’s real, it’s damn real!’ just doesn’t sound right. Maybe I heard ‘It’s true, it’s damn true!’ for so long that nothing else sounds right. Also, looks like I got my reasoning behind why A&8’s didn’t have a match at FR, and why we were seeing the previous match on Spike and not on FR. I’m actually wondering how this tag match is going to play out at FR.
Backstage Segment > C
Joseph in OVW? The thought of that makes me giggle.
Watching Hogan and Bully go back and forth, it’s hard to tell who’s the heel and who’s the face in this relationship. But the big question is will Midol get upset with Hogan for using their brand name?
Backstage Segment > C-
Storm was decent on mic, but then we had to listen to Hardy’s innermost thought. Lucky us!
#1 Contender Triple Threat Match – Kash vs King vs Ion > A-
I was excited when I realized we got to see Kenny King in a match! Seeing Kash in the ring was also nice to see. But then there was Ion. Actually, I was quite impressed with the moves that they were seeing in the ring. I will admit I automatically look at ion’s moves, and anything that looks at all off makes me nervous. The same move from any of the other guys just don’t freak me out the way Ion’s do, because of his history.
All in all, this match was sick! A few moves looked a bit sloppy, but not even as bad as DOC did earlier, so I’m not even going to try to pick out specific moves. King’s win was a total shock to me. I really didn’t think he was going to get the chance. Him winning this match makes me much more interested in seeing Final Resolution on Sunday.
Winner – Kenny King (5:56)
Backstage Segment > C+
Bully talking in the phone with Brooke? Will she show up when Bully is in the ring?
Video > A
I really liked this short promo for Lockdown. One of TNA’s better PPV promos.
Video > D
Lucky us, more recapping of Aries messing with Brooke and Bully to get under Hogan’s skin.
In Ring Segment > B-
Has Bully put a little bit of weight back on? He still looks really good, just looks like he’s put on a bit of winter chub. Aries is so great on mic, but his reaction to Hogan’s music made me smile. It was such overkill, but it was still funny how Aries reacted and moved his chair off the ramp. Running from Hogan in any way makes me giggle. I watched a petite woman of little over a hundred pounds back Hogan into a corner and make Hogan look nervous, Aries has nothing to worry about. I know it’s all for show, but it’s not anything I can believe.
I will say that Brooke so casually calling Bully by his real first name, Mark, was well played. It rolled off her tongue as casually as it should have. Her boobs bouncing around in that tiny top, there’s nothing casual about that, or any of that outfit! Not much of an executive outfit. She’s showing more skin than any of the Knockouts have on this episode of Impact.
After all this, I truly hope that they don’t drop the ball with the Brooke/Bully storyline. It doesn’t have to be relationship, but it has to be something juicy or it will all fall apart. Brooke as the leader of A&8’s would make sense at this point, but I doubt they’d actually go there, especially after the bimbos that A&8’s have in their lair tonight.
Video > B+
Roode, as usual, was good in this video setting up for FR. Before they showed it, I was sure that Roode didn’t have a chance on Sunday, but now I’m not so sure.
Hardy & Storm & AJ vs Roode & Kaz & Daniels > A
Throwback Thursday? Those pants are something else! And the fanny packs. But the cut up shirts sealed the deal. Fortune wasn’t THAT long ago, but they did set up a bit for them to be able to wear them to the ring. I wonder if they saw those pants (in person or online), possibly after having a few, and deciding they needed a reason to wear them to the ring together. They have to be comfortable to work in, I know I live in my PJ bottoms at home.
Watching AJ drop down so Hardy could hit poetry in motion actually elicited a ‘wow’ from me. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, and I’m always impressed with the wrestlers who will drop down to assist Hardy in that move. It’s not a big deal, really, but for some reason I see that as a show of respect from a partner, even though I know that theory is bunk. But beyond that, everyone in this match was on! AJ had his little blip of not being ready for Storm’s tag, but that could go back to AJ’s character being slightly off a times recently, so I see that as a good thing, not bad. All six of these guys hit every move as hard as they could, and a number of them very creative moves that I haven’t seen hit exactly in those ways.
I loved the way Daniels came off the corner on Hardy with the foot to his chest, not sure I’ve seen that one before – though I’ve been watching for so many years, who knows how many moves I’ve forgotten! And then there was the sequence when all the wrestlers were in the ring exchanging big moves right before the end.
Winners – Hardy & AJ & Storm (15:06)
In Ring Segment > C+
As soon as Storm and AJ left the ring after the main event, I asked where A&8’s were. They got paid by Roode, so they had to attack Hardy before Impact went off the air. It was a given, but I don’t think they attacked Hardy enough for it to matter at all. I’m expecting another attack before the main event at Final Resolution.
This seems to be the week for solid matches. Between the Fatal 4 Way on RAW, the X Division Match and the main event here on Impact, I’m pretty happy. I’m learning that it now takes much less brilliant wrestling to keep me happy each week, and while that’s somewhat upsetting to me, when I see a couple of good matches in one week – a non-PPV week – I’m left feeling pretty happy with wrestling as a whole. Hopefully you enjoyed Impact as much as I did. I thought it was a pretty solid go home to Final Resolution, even though I had forgotten it was the go home until it started.
