Traditional Survivor Series Bouts, Paul Heyman’s Role, Pushing Reigns, Sami Zayn

What is the point of WWE even having Survivor Series? I remember the days when the card consisted of 4-5 “Survivor Series” matches. Now it consists of more “regular” matches than anything with a sprinkle of one SS match if we are lucky.

Yesterday you mentioned that the card for Survivor Series doesn’t look great and took a quote from your archive where Vince McMahon said the Survivor Series concept was dead. While some concepts are probably more intriguing, like Hell In A Cell and TLC matches, don’t you think traditional Survivor Series matches are at least more intriguing than standard matches? For example, wouldn’t the CM Punk & Daniel Bryan vs. the Wyatt Family angle be much more interesting as a 5-5 survivor match?

This is the first time I’ve ever done this but I’m combing two questions because I believe the first leads to the second. Survivor Series is one of the “big four” WWE shows and has been a staple in the company since 1987. Vince McMahon in particular is not a fan of the Traditional Survivor Series concept and feel it’s something that is outdated. However, the company has been hesitant about scrapping the show because it’s etched in history.

I would prefer more traditional Survivor Series bouts in favor of the vanilla lineup WWE has rolled out for the show so far.  As I mentioned Wednesday, I don’t think this show is going to sell. WWE had a perfect opportunity for a traditional Survivor Series bout after Raw then unbeknownst to everyone, announced a tag match with CM Punk & Daniel Bryan opposing Luke Harper & Erick Rowan. Let’s hope something is either changed or added because the three matches announced so far would be underwhelming for a B-level show, much less a “big four” event.

Why is WWE breaking up Ryback and Paul Heyman so quickly after pushing it heavily out of the gate? Heyman is the perfect mouthpiece for Ryback and a great way to generate more heat.

There has been a lot of back and forth in regards to creative plans for Paul Heyman. One plan called for him to be off television for an extended period of time following his program with CM Punk, however, he popped right back up on Monday. I’ll argue the Heyman/Ryback alliance did little to nothing to help elevate Ryback. Everyone thought Heyman would be a great catalyst in the elevation of Curtis Axel but that hasn’t exactly worked out either.

Have you noticed lately that Roman Reigns seems to have a look of disdain on his face toward Dean Ambrose when The Shield does a promo? Also, the announce team seems to be praising Roman Reigns a lot recently, separating him from the group. Is WWE creative setting the stage for a Shield breakup, with Roman Reigns going solo?

We talked about this in depth in this week’s installment of the WNW Premium Mailbag. The not-so-subtle teases of a Shield breakup have been made and the company is clearly tinkering with the idea. All I can really say in this regard is we’ll have to wait and see but I will use this opportunity to put over Roman Reigns. At one time considered the guy Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins would have to hide, his work on the main roster has been better than pretty much anyone expected. Dot com posted a photo of Roman Reigns with the WWE title (view here) and he certainly looks the part.

Do you see Sami Zayn being a big name in WWE when he gets called up?

Sami Zayn, the former El Generico, is an extremely talented worker. He has all of the tools to have a credible run and is yet another well-seasoned name lurking in WWE developmental. I’m optimistic but there will be no way of knowing for sure until it happens.

August 2010: What are your initial thoughts on Alberto Del Rio? What’s in store for him? – Alberto Del Rio looks to have a very bright future in WWE. Putting him over clean against Rey Mysterio was a huge nod of confidence and there are clear plans for him to be pushed straight to the main event. I’ve heard very good things about Del Rio as he was very impressive prior to his TV debut.

Fast forward to 2013; Alberto Del Rio still gets a huge nod of confidence from the higher ups. He didn’t draw any reaction and still pushed to the main event (and down our throat as well) while more capable workers like Ziggler and Cesaro got lost in the midcard shuffle…

  • FeedMeMoreASKWNW

Richard, it be nice to get your overall thoughts on Del Rio as of this date. Career so far, in ring skills, how he’s been used, mic work, credibility etc.

My how times have changed with Del Rio since 2010. I feel they should have never touched his old gimmick with the super luxury cars ..at least he was getting a reaction out of the crowd.

    • JJ

Exactly, I thought they were setting up for a million dollar man but Mexican lol. I expected him to bring in wrestlers with “his money” and make a nice clique..but then nothing ever came of it and the only good things about him slowly died away.

it should be an old school elimination style matchup at survivor , with the team of the shield and wyatts vs uso’s, brothers rhodes and punk & bryan ..in fact the good folks at osw review have even done a mock up of the graphic for the match in the old wwf survivor series style…imagine vinces throat destroying screaming as he announces the names of the wrestlers involved , as only vince could do during those 80′s /early 90′s ppv openings ..check it out

  • Draven

I think each member of the shield would look the part with the WWE Championship.

    • JJ

Don’t buy Dean Ambrose as a top title champ.. I could see the other two easily though.

      • Draven

I think ambroae could be a great heel champ his promos from FCW are fantastic as well as on raw he just acts so crazy it hooked me in right away, and his in ring work is in the top of WWE all imo tho.

  • The Breaker

Heyman is a great manager, but he can’t get someone over that doesn’t have it in them to be believable characters on their own. Brock Lesnar is as successful as he is because he sells his character just about as well as one possibly could. He’s a beast inside the ring and plays himself off Heyman wonderfully. Managers are just that– a compliment to a performer. If someone doesn’t have the star power, no amount of talking is going to change that.

    • the arbiter

I like Paul Heymans work and think he cuts some great promos, but he ain’t Bobby Heenan when it comes to getting people to hate talent. Back in his prime you could have put just about anyone with Heenan and the fans would have hated them. All his guys might not have been megastars, but they drew heat while they were with him, and the best way to face turn a guy in the 80s was to have him beat up bobby.
Paul put paul over way more than he puts his “guys” over.

      • The Breaker

I agree that no one can touch the legacy of ‘The Brain’. Simply put, he’s the greatest manager of all-time.

  • Kevin

i don’t know who is more embarrassed right now:

Lesnar/Punk to be associated with Axel and Ryback

Ric Flair to have his legendary career associated with the MIz

  • michael

Del Rio is boring. I’d love to see him get the US Championship. He can call it the Mexican Championship.

  • david

I’ve never understood why WWE doesn’t corporate more #1 contender stipulations into the Traditional Survivor Series matches… I believe it would make more purpose in having them rather than Generic Team A vs Generic Team B

  • John

Ambrose and Rollings are obviously way more talented than Roman Reigns, however i believe Reigns is the future.

  • John

I think it will be Goldust, Cody Rhodes & The Usos vs. The Real Americans & The Shield (Rollins/Reigns) at Survivor Series.. So we will at least get one traditional match.

  • Jay El Bee

The WWE already announced that a SS match was happening on the Main Event this week, they just announced who was going to be involved. I assume we will find out who is in that match either on Smackdown tomorrow or starting next week on Raw.
