Two WWE Titles, Attending Shows, How Likely Is Sting vs. Undertaker?, Dissecting Wrestlemania XXX Lineup

Am I the only one who is tired of seeing Randy Orton bringing two belts to the ring? Any word on what they are going to do with the original World Heavyweight Championship belt?

You are not the only one and I agree with you, it’s old seeing Randy Orton carry both title belts. I can also tell you it wasn’t the original plan as the original plan called for the “champion of champions” to only carry the WWE Championship belt after titles were unified. WWE even played up in the build to WWE TLC (the event where the titles were unified) that it would be the final time the WWE and World Heavyweight Championship belts would be in the ring together. Here we are nearly four months later and Orton is still carrying both and even had both at Tuesday’s Wrestlemania 30 press conference. As long as there are two belts there will be continued rumblings and speculation about de-unification and the splitting of the title belts.

I’ve always been curious. How often do you attend events? Do you go to them when you are in the area? Do you get any media access to the superstars? Or are you attending just like any fan?

It’s been a few years since I’ve attended a WWE show and this is because it’s simply easier for me to operate at my desk with my phone than it is to be on the ground. We have a great team of correspondents that attend TV tapings and shows, so we always have people on the ground. The last couple of TNA shows I attended, I got media credentials and essentially had “free roam” over the backstage area. It was a neat situation to be in but I still accomplish more from my desk, managing our team of correspondents and working my connections from my phone. If this were 20 years ago and my work was sent out via snail mail rather than being posted instantly on the Internet, I’d probably travel a heck of a lot more.

With a match between Sting and Undertaker likely to happen, would you rather see it happen at Summerslam this year or Wrestlemania next year? I ask because a match at Wrestlemania would be an obvious Undertaker win, where a match at Summerslam would produce an unknown winner.

There are still several things that have to happen for Sting vs. Undertaker to become a reality. First, we have to be able to confirm that Sting has a WWE contract. We do not have that confirmation yet. Next, it hinges on Undertaker’s health and desire for such a match. The former, Undertaker’s health, is probably the biggest question mark because he won’t even know himself until after his match against Brock Lesnar on Sunday. If Sting has a WWE contract and Undertaker’s healthy, both parties will have to come into agreement on the match. When would it take place? Where would it take place? Most importantly, who would go over in such a bout? While Sting only wants one more match against Undertaker, it’s fair to say both are on borrowed time. These are issues that can’t be taken likely and would all have to be sorted before the dream match would ever actually come to fruition.

In your opinion, which Wrestlemania XXX match has had the best build?

I’ve been wanting to do a list for a while now, so I’ll just list them in terms of interest with the top being the match/point I’m most interested in and the bottom being the match/point I’m least interested in.

  1. Will Daniel Bryan get his payoff?
  2. John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt
  3. Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar
  4. Everything else

My biggest area of intrigue is what will happen with Daniel Bryan? Will WWE finally give him the payoff he’s rightfully earned and the one the fans want or will this be another situation where egos and backstage politics bury him yet again? Sure, there’s a lot of money in Daniel Bryan as the proverbial underdog that is constantly held down BUT everyone eventually gets a payoff. Some are bigger than others and some are more successful than others but everyone eventually gets a payoff.

Bray Wyatt has done a phenomenal job on the mic in his program with John Cena. When I first heard they were doing Wyatt/Cena, I wasn’t looking forward to it. However, Bray has proved he’s worthy and how it’s booked will be interesting.

If you don’t have interest in “the streak,” you’re probably not a wrestling fan. While it’s fairly *obvious* Undertaker goes over, will he steal the show like he did last year? A big-man battle between Undertaker and Lesnar is so big it doesn’t need an explanation.

After this, it’ s a forgettable card that feels rushed together by mixing and matching pieces to get people on the show. I have no interest in the 30-man Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. The winner gets… a trophy. So what? People going in expecting some type of elaborate payoff accompanied with a huge surprise are probably going to be disappointed. I see this match as a watered down Royal Rumble, where the winner doesn’t get a title shot.

The Vickie Guerrero Divas Championship Invitational has train wreck written all over it. 14 women in the ring at the same time, where the winner goes over via pinfall. I can’t envision anything other than some forgettable overly gimmicky bout that comes across as watered down and lacks payoff. I’d rather see a singles match with someone getting a big victory over the longest-reigning Divas champion in company history.

The Shield’s match against Kane & The New Age Outlaws is extremely random. WWE teased dissension from The Shield for months and have now turned them babyface and reinforced the three pieces are one. Is this all part of an elaborate booking plan that ends in their inevitable breakup or is it WWE pulling back on planned singles pushes because they got cold feet?

The Pre-Show bout with The Usos defending the WWE Tag Team Championship against Los Matadores, The Real Americans and Ryback & Curtis Axel is another extremely random bout. Goldust & Cody Rhodes have been the best tag team in WWE over the course of the last year. They should be challenging The Usos in a bout that rewards all of their hard work. Los Matadores are comedy, RybAxel has fizzled and The Real Americans have teased dissension for months.

From the Ask WNW vault…

May 2012: Why does it seem that the WWE Intercontinental Championship doesn’t hold the same importance as it used too? - Some will argue the Intercontinental Championship isn’t as prestigious because there are two World title belts and why I think the number of titles certainly plays a factor, it comes down to the company’s vision for the belt. A title has prestige when it means something. The problem is when the titleholder is put under clean in a non-title match; no one takes the belt seriously. The counter point to this is, “well this shows anything can happen.” My response is why not just change the belt? My steps in restoring prestige to the Intercontinental title are eliminating the US strap and no longer booking the IC champ to go under in a non-title match. The strap could then be used to help elevate an up and coming worker.

I think the attle royal should’ve been placed on the preshow and the tt match on the card

  • Jbreed

The Undertaker/Brock Lesnar build has been terrible. Everybody’s interested in the streak but an Undertaker/Lesnar match itself doesn’t exactly scream “big time match” on paper.

    • Matt

I thought the build has been great. You can’t really do too much in promos when 98% of the WWE Universe thinks Undertaker is going to win. They will need to tell their story in the ring. I don’t know if it’ll be the best or prettiest Undertaker Mania match, but I think a lot of people will be surprised.

      • Its Brock Lesnar Bitch

There hasn’t been much build on the match as all the focus has been on booking Bryan and salvaging the main event. You have too big gun pro’s and well the streak sells itself especially when you have a big name like Brock.

        • Jbreed

It’s a 4 hour show and all the focus isn’t supposed to just be on one single match. The Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar is one of the main events and just because they’re 2 big stars doesn’t mean the WWE shouldn’t be creative about selling the match. Even for the sake of giving us some interesting segments on Raw to watch for a change.

      • Jbreed

But just because we all know who’s gonna win doesn’t mean they should just phone in the build to a match. I may be in the minority here but as intriguing as the streak is I hardly have any interest in the match itself because of the lack of creativity as far as building the match is concerned. The Undertaker/Brock Lesnar isn’t exactly one of those dream matches you can easily sell with just a few in ring promos and an occasional beatdown.

    • Dave Barton

I agree, but I’d also like to add that if they’d had Lesnar beat everyone he’s faced since his return, it’d feel like a big match…especially if they’d capitalized on the fact that Taker has never beaten Lesnar in previous matchups.

      • Bob’s Diner

Yup – for some reason they keep trying to tell us Brock Lesnar is “unstoppable”, despite him losing often and getting manhandled by Big Show at every turn just a couple of months ago. That to me has hurt this match more than anything. At least it means more Paul Heyman promos and telling us Brock Lesnar is going to beat up the Undertaker and then Batista and Randy Orton and be champ at the end of WrestleMania. That was gold!

        • BIG M

Show didn’t exactly man handle him at Rumble did he Lesner went to town on him with a chair for 15 minutes.
Don’t think Lesner’s win/loss record hurts his “I Love to hurt people” gimmick does it.
Hell Lesner works so stiff not sure it can be called just a gimmick.

          • Bob’s Diner

The whole lead up to the Royal Rumble actually made Lesnar look like a whimp – Big Show threw him around with ease and Brock kept running away every week. So all he did at Royal Rumble was beat Big Show to death with a steel chair. But I do agree that his win/loss record isn’t what hurt him most – that was his boring long feud with HHH. After that, he lost all his momentum.

However, I have to say that first Lesnar/Undertaker segment on Raw in Chicago was awesome and made me excited for the match. I realise I’m a minority, but that is the match I most want to see at WrestleMania.

          • Its Brock Lesnar Bitch

I loved the Chicago segment too. Paul E Dangerously trolling the WWE universe with the Punk entrance.

          • Bob’s Diner

Heyman killed it all night long. I actually thought Lesnar was awesome as well. It’s weird people worry about Lesnar being too stiff, considering Undertaker has said numerous times if MMA was around in the 80′s he would have done that instead of wrestling. Last time I checked, that was working about as stiff as you can get. Maybe this is Undertaker finally getting that chance to have an MMA-style match?

          • Its Brock Lesnar Bitch

The best part was Brock screaming his name in the same way Heyman does. Takers a veteran wouldn’t surprise me if he came back in amazing condition everyone speculating he’s weak don’t know anything about his condition. He certainly has an interest in MMA and I’m sure both he and Lesnar have been through the match already a thousand times over. One things for sure its gonna be a great match I’m looking forward to it even though Undertaker will win.

          • Bob’s Diner

The other thing is it will be a different match to the past few years; last year was a classic wrestling match, WrestleMania 28 was a typical HHH/Shawn Michaels emotionless spotfest – this will be VERY different and hopefully exciting.

          • Gary Robert

That’s typical boring creative when it comes to heels. Every heel, regardless of being “a beast” or “best in the world” is always the coward. To me, its a boring continuing trend that has gone on forever. God forbid a massive heel actually wasn’t scared of people or, as example of C.M. Punks heel turn, he actually believed he was the best in the world rather than just spout the words and then act like the exact opposite. Its an old school mentality that has been out-of-date for some time. I get that it draws heat from the crowd but jesus, mix in a few other personality types for the heels.

  • Venom

The reason Brock/Taker match doesn’t have much build is because of Lesnars limited dates. Site he’s been showing up lately but it feels like a cameo appearance. Him F5ing Taker was the only thing that made the build interesting. Also that match should have been Lesners first WM match back when people cared.

It is lame they had to make a 30 man battle royal with guys like Ziggler, Kingston, Miz, Ryder, Goldust, Cody. I mean these guys should have been main event or upper midcard stars by now. Miz was a WM main event. It’s hard to believe a year ago Rybacks career went downhill. He turned heel after losing to Henry and never looked back.

    • ron

Hard to blame it on Lesnars limited appearances he has been around a little bit more than Taker but not much.

      • Venom

It’s true, and I did point out he has been showing up more lately. But really last year Lesnar vs HHH was pointless. Sure CM Punk vs Undertaker turned into a good match, ever since Brock lost that UFC match and Taker was doing that interview and Brock walks by and be says “you wanna do it” started that little spark. Should have been the first feud back.

  • Andrew Dunn

Daniel Bryan is going to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania 30. Yes! Yes! Yes!

    • BIG M

If he doesn’t higher ups in WWE have a death wish.

  • Xavier

As far as the best built WrestleMania program is concerned it’s either Cena/Wyatt or Bryan/Triple H. Bray has been on fire, everything that man touches turns into gold (he’s been that good as of late). Then watching Cena/Harper last week have a great match last week on RAW only to be followed up by that beat down of Cena wear they put a mask on him only for Cena to turn around and one up this week has been fantastic. Both have knocked it out of the park on the mic as well. I’m fully expecting Cena/Bray to steal the show this year at Mania and become a MOTY candidate. Bryan/HHH has been pretty damn good as well if you ask me. Everything from the OCCUPYRaw movement (amazing segment) to the great mic work of Triple H & Stephanie has been great. The promo that Triple H & Steph cut on RAW this past Monday along eith the video package was one of the best heel promos I’ve seen in a very long time. Triple H & Steph put on a clinic on how to get heel heat and in the process stick it to all the smarks as well. Taker/Brock has been atrocious and that’s putting it nicely. There has been ZERO mention of their matches from 02/03, their Royal Rumble encounter where they were the final two contestants in 03, their run in a UFC event or the fact that Taker has never beaten Lesnar in a 1 on 1 match. Had they done any of those things fans would be a lot more invested into this match heading into Mania. However I still think this match will deliver as do all Taker Mania matches do.

As a lifelong fan of wrestling I’d love too see Sting in the WWE at some point. I just don’t wanna see it against The Undertaker. Sting is damn near 57 and Taker is closing in on 50. I really don’t know what fans would expect from two guys that are literally half a century old. The Taker/Sting boat sailed well over a decade ago IMHO but if must happen I’d rather see it at Summerslam rather then WM. Give me Taker/Cena, Taker/Bryan or Taker/Bray at Mania everyday of the week at Mania over Taker/Sting. Sting is about 10-15 years past his prime and literally looked as bad as Batista in the ring last time I saw him wrestle against Magnus. Then on top if that Sting wouldn’t be anywhere near the draw that some fans think he would. He literally has no brand recognition with the WWE at all and has never even had his name mentioned on WWE programming if I’m correct. People need to remember that a good chunk of fans that watch the WWE have never even seen Sting wrestle because they are A.) Too young to remember him or B.) Don;t watch TNA or even no it exist or possible even both. If Bret Hart returning to face McMahon at Mania in a match were the screwjob incident had been replayed, revisited or mentioned on WWE programming atleast 1000x didn’t draw well then what makes people think that Sting could draw well with a fanbase where I’d say atleast 50 to 65 percent of fans have never seen him wrestle, didn’t grow up with him or don’t even know he exist?

    • BIG M

I also believe the boat has sailed on Taker vs Sting sadly.
But I think you are being a little unfair to them both.
Yes their old yes their beat up but they both still have just enough juice in the tank to put on a memorable match when they have too.
But I would have to reiterate my previous comment above I think this sunday will sadly be Taker’s last appearance.

      • Xavier

Yes sadly this could very well be Taker’s last match, as far as Sting having something left in the tank I really hope you’re right but just going off of the last few times I’ve seen Sting in the ring he didn’t look very good at all and showed his age. My other issue with Sting returning to face Sting is that while from a old school wrestling fan’s prospective it would be a dream match but would there honestly be any doubt as to who goes over here? That reason alone is why so many people aren’t interested in Taker/Lesnar, we all know Taker is going over, there has been very little doubt about that at all. Same could be said for Taker/Sting because there’s no way you, me or anyone else can justify Sting being the guy too end the streak at his age and for the fact that he’s never worked a date in the WWE in his life.

        • BIG M

Does anybody actually think the streak will end going into Undertaker’s match at Mania each year
Ive loved Takers last few Mania matches because as a “Smark” I’ve always gone into them thinking “No one will break the streak”.
Then 20 minutes into the match Taker gets knocked down after taking a finisher and just like that I’m a 10 year old kid again marvelling at these athletes these entertainers LOL.
He gets covered the ref starts to count ONE “NO WAY” TWO “THE STREAK IS BROKEN I CANT BELEVE IT… IT… ITS OVER” THR……. “NO HE KICKED OUT OMG THIS IS AMAZING.
          LMAO.
It doesn’t matter who Taker faces at Mania we all know he will (and should) retire with the streak intact.
But that doesn’t stop us from believing it might happen for one or two brief moments in his match every year does it.

          • Cubed56

I disagree, I do not think Taker should retire with the streak intact.

          • Bob’s Diner

Imagine if he actually wanted to give the end of the streak to Sting… that would be… interesting…

        • Cubed56

I don’t think there is any way this is Taker’s last match, barring any SERIOUS injury, for these reasons. Only Taker will know how he feels after this Sunday, and he will make the choice based on that. Even if his decision is he’s done, I believe he will go at WM XXXI. He has said many times he wants the streak to be broken and if he decides hes got nothing left after this sunday, ill still predict he musters up the strength and will for one more to put someone over and end the streak.

  • BIG M

I’m a little worried about Taker’s health at Mania quite frankly.
I mean Lesner’s not known for being gentle with people.
As much as I love watching Taker work especially at Mania he only works once a year now for a reason.
His shoulder his hip and his knees are wrecked and the poor guy looks to be in agony after every match.
Id love to see Taker vs Sting next year but I’m not sure Taker will be physically able to work.
No sadly I think this may be the deadman’s last Wrestlemania appearance.

    • Its Brock Lesnar Bitch

Brock’s a great ring worker he’ll make the Undertaker look broken but he won’t legitimately injure him. People wanted Cena Taker and Cena is just as stiff as Brock.

      • BIG M

You know I’m not usually in the habit of defending Super Cena BUT.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen him intentionally work stiff with anyone.
Plenty of workers have worked stiff on him and I’ve never seen him return the favour either.

        • Its Brock Lesnar Bitch

I’m not saying Cena would work intentionally work stiff on the Undertaker just that the Undertaker would be as damaged in a match with Cena as with one with Lesnar. Brock can work stiff when he needs to but this match will be meticulously planned at the Undertakers gym Taker will no what he can and can’t take. Age may be a problem for Taker but the Lesnar style will not.

          • BIG M

But would Lesner really respect what Taker can and can’t do I mean these two have history outside WWE (Remember Taker asking Lesner “Do you wanna go” after a UFC event where Lesner lost).
And when has Lesner not worked stiff with someone.
This is a guy who badly botched a power bomb to Hardcore Holly broke his neck knew he was hurt and laughed about it in the ring completely outside Kayfabe.
I remember the Hell In a Cell match these two had years ago Lesner almost killed Taker.
Lesner instead of hitting Taker with the steel steps in his hands he decided to throw the bloody steeps into Taker’s head without enough time for Taker to get his hands up he was busted open the hard way lost too much blood and was running on fumes the rest of the match.
I still can’t believe VKM Re Hired Lesner really.
The man is a dangerous worker always has been.
Im no Mark but I’m genuinely concerned for Undertaker”s well fair at Mania.

          • Its Brock Lesnar Bitch

Holly deserved that he was sandbagging Brock in an attempt to make him look a fool.

          • BIG M

No-one deserves to have their neck broken and have to spend a year in rehab just because they acted like a D**k Head for a moment.
If that were the case we would all have our necks broken probably more than once.

          • Its Brock Lesnar Bitch

If Holly had actually focused on doing his job and not acting like a d!~k his neck would have been fine.

  • BIG M

I actually like seeing Orton with two belts.
He looks a little like Wladimir Klitchko with all his Belts.

  • David F.

I am just glad we dont have to deal with any more Cena v Rock crap. Im actually looking forward to seeing Cena v Wyatt. I think the chemistry is just there unlike Cena v Rock.

  • John

I must be the only fan who is really not interested in seeing Daniel Bryan vs. Triple H, or the Triple-Threat title match. The only two matches i’m excited for is John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt and Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar. I’m not exactly sure how good either of those matches will be, but just the sight of seeing Cena/Wyatt and Undertaker/Lesnar finally in the ring together after all the hype is going to be unreal.

    • BigMike

I know Taker will win and I cannot stand Lesnar. Cena and Wyatt will be good but I am not over impressed with this lineup for WM. The triple threat will be ok as long as the crybaby Batista does not win

  • Jay El Bee

I think you mean will Bryan get his “rightfully earned” payoff for the third time in the last 8 months, because he’s already gotten the payoff twice already.

    • kingdook24

I hardly call being WWE Champion twice, with both reigns lasting less than 24 hours a payoff.

      • Jay El Bee

The payoff has nothing to do with how long he held the title, if that was true then Punk never got his payoff at MITB 2011 since he was stripped of his title the very next day just like Bryan after NOC last year.

  • BigMike

The Gold Belt that came from WCW and was from the NWA(( not the true NWA World Title Belt; “Sweet Charlotte” is still around though)) now if it were the true NWA title belt, then I woiuld say scrap them both as the NWA has been around longer than them both

  • Jaryd

I don’t mind the Andre battle royal too much. I know its just a gimmicky undercard match to get people on the card but it’s nothing I’m too upset over.

My real problem is the diva invitational because you have a woman in AJ who has worked at the top of the card with Bryan/Punk and Cena/Dolph angles and has held the belt for a long time… And you’re just going to kill any credibility that title has gained by putting her under in a complete clustercluck?

I hope that if AJ does lose the belt that she is the one who is pinned to give the new champion at least a little credibility.

  • Dw

Buuuuuuut Richard you didn’t answer the taker v sting question? Would you prefer Mania or Summerslam? Giving all those things listed above were worked out. Oh yea Sting would totally work his last match at Summerslam (sarcasm).
