Very Detailed Information On What Happened To Jerry Lawler On This Week’s WWE Raw From The Moment He Went Down Until He Came Out Of Surgery On Tuesday, The Courageous Medical Workers That Saved His Life; Backstage News On The Chaos Behind-The-Scenes Including Who Worked Gorilla While Lawler Was Monitored, Was There Talk Of Stopping The Show?, McMahon’s “Command” To Talent Once Jerry Had A Pulse Including Vince’s Thoughts On CM Punk Masking His Feelings

Please note: I’m on vacation and haven’t watched the Raw tape yet. I know some are probably going to complain about me posting these details, however, Jerry Lawler is alive today and it’s my responsibility to provide my readers with the inside scoop. Please be advised the material in this post isn’t pretty and if you are not into non-wrestling material, skip over this one.

Jerry Lawler had a heart attack at the announcers table at this week’s WWE Raw. Medical personnel and crew members transported him from ringside to the backstage area via the aisle way through the crowd. Half-way there he was met by EMS where he was hit with a defibulator several times to restart his heart. I’m told he was unresponsive and not breathing at this point.

Another crew of EMTs used a different defibulator that restarted his heart and ultimately saved his life. Jerry was rushed to a hospital in downtown Montreal where he was put on a ventilator while doctors worked to stabilize him. After nearly twenty minutes, Lawler was stabilized and was taken off the vent. A multitude of tests were ran once he was stabilized including an eye test while he was coherent. They did an MRI of his brain to rule out a stroke. Once a stroke was ruled out, they performed a CT scan while most WWE officials and medical personnel felt like it was cardiac arrest even before the CT results came back.

On Tuesday, Lawler had a stint placed in his heart that acted as a balloon to help clear blockage. That is where things stand currently as far as his health.

Regarding the mood backstage at Raw, I’m told Vince McMahon and Triple H rotated from seeing him and working gorilla. There was no talk about stopping the show unless it was confirmed that Jerry had died.

While Vince was working gorilla, he was screaming for people to get in-character and hold it together. He said that’s what Jerry would have wanted and controlled everything said by Michael Cole on television. As soon as McMahon received word that Jerry had a pulse he snapped into “war general mode” and commanded the troops to “finish strong.”

One observer tells me that Hunter looked “lost and helpless” backstage and was trying to console workers and was much more sympathetic [than Vince] towards people’s feelings. I’m told it was Cole’s call not to announce the rest of the show and just provide updates on the health of Jerry Lawler.

Even though WWE Champion CM Punk didn’t look shaken, he was as just minutes prior he was working a match with Lawler. Vince told Punk to get in-character. The feeling is Punk did an “amazing job” masking his feelings and Vince was very happy with him. Once the show went off the air there was a small talent meeting backstage with prayers offered for Lawler.

I’m glad they didn’t cancel the rest of the show. As a fan the updates were huge. If they go off the air were all sitting there thinking the worst.

Thanks for the thorough update Richard. The news isn't always pretty or funny, but this site continuously reports it in a very professional and respectful manner. I'd imagine Vince was right in saying that King would want the show to go on, and am just very thankful he is okay. I got a chill watching raw last night that I hadn't gotten since May 23, 1999. Thankfully though, the end result was different.

    Thank you richard

what does mean working gorilla, richard, you have international readers and that terms are unusual for us, thank you

    • Richard Gray

Gorilla is basically "central command" where the show is ran. Vince McMahon and/or Hunter sit here and control every element the show by use of a headset. Gorilla is located right where the workers come out.

If you don't mind me adding just a little bit Richard- it's also called "Gorilla" after the late Gorilla Monsoon because that's the area he would mostly be to watch the events/shows in the 90's.

Great job Richard.. I was getting worried that there was no news about it and I think wwe will be happy that for once they saved a life and the media reported it and didn’t blame him.. I do have to ask or beg that wwe never use this in a storyline ever!!!!!

    • Simon Veitch

I totally agree with this 100% that it should never be used in a storyline, however even from the moment I read about it and then checked it out on RAW, I had to question whether or not they would attempt to use it to turn Punk more heel by stating Lawler couldn't take it any more and is washed up. I really hope this isn't the case, but seriously, we saw them using Eddie Guerrero's death in story line at one point so nothing would surprise me at the moment

Yea I know they did but they got heat for that when Linda ran for senate. So maybe they hopefully they won’t. If he wants to thank them on the mic in the ring I am all for it but not if it’s used in a storyline..

        • havoc525

I would hope it be kept out of storyline, but, Lawler may offer it to Punk, to get him over further. I would hope Punk would refuse, but, remember Lawler let Cole use his mother’s death to get over. I hope it doesn’t get used, but I know better than to say it won’t.

It was probably the luckiest thing for King, to be at work when it happened. They always have medical personal on hand waiting. If he had been alone when it happened, it could have ended much worse.

Richard, thank you for the info but as a healthcare provider, I feel the need to correct you on that it is a "stent," not a "stint." I just want people to have correct info. I question whether your info about them taking him off the vent so quickly because of the update his ex-wife gave tonight and because I persoanlly would never extubate a person 30 minutes after they stopped breathing and still not completely with it. But I am not there so I can only speculate based on my own experiences. But as to what others have said, thank god he had it where he did or he very well would not be here with us today. The first 5 minutes after someone's heart stops is the most critical in being abe to get it to start beating a regular rythm again and in preventing brain damage. A good reminder in why we all should know how to perform CPR!!!! I hope and pray he recovers fully and is able to come back to commentary in the future!

It wouldn’t surprise me if they did use it as a storyline!!! Remember they did a storyline when Kings mum actually died and Cole slagged King off about it in the ring!

  • Michael413

For all the people who think that the WWE and Vince will stoop low enough to the level of using this incident in storyline because of the things they have done in the past, remember this: the high profile storylines such as Rey Mysterio using divine intervention to win a world title, or Michael Cole making fun of Jerry Lawler’s deceased mom, would not have been done without the blessing of those involved.

In the case of mysterio, I believe he would not have gone through it if he along with Vicki Guerrero did not give the ok to use Eddie’s name as “divine intervention” for Rey.

And for Kings storyline, I am almost certain King has the pull to pick and choose what he wants to be a part of and has major influence on what is done and said, and if Jerry did not want his deceased Mom’s name used in storyline with Cole, he wouldn’t have gone through with it.

So, in closing, unless down the road Jerry gives the ok to use this incident in storyline, it will not happen.

I pray Jerry is ok. I don't think Punk was the only one masking his feelings. I think they all were. The way this is written sucks and acts like Punk was a hero and the rest didn't give a crap.
