Weekly Rundown: Impact Wrestling trial run

This blog reflects my subjective views and nothing more. If you disagree – which is encouraged – feel free to voice your opinion (in a civil manner) in the comments section. Also, I am always open to constructive criticism of the writing format, phrasing, etc.

Hello and welcome back to yet another edition of the Weekly Rundown hosted by yours truly, Guy Landau. This is a weekly feature on WrestlingNewsWorld.com where I gloss over the important happenings in the WWE week as it pertains to the 2 major shows, in the form of bulletins for the positive happenings (under the “YES!” column, and prefaced with + signs), the negative happenings (under the “NO!” column, and prefaced with – signs), and the ones I could not decide what they were, but felt they were important enough to comment on (Under the “Maybe?” column, and prefaced with ? signs).

So without further ado, let’s get started.

YES!

RAW

+ “I’m no phony UFC fighter”… They are really pushing that “Lesnar quit” deal to the internet, huh? Those sort of comments would usually have the IWC scrambling for what they mean.

+ I really like WWE making light of how Clay came out after Show was fired, as I thought it was odd when it happened.

+ Well, it seems they ARE going withDel Riovs. Santino, at least to an extent. If this develops into aUStitle feud (after NWO) I am all for it – with Santino losing and reforming CoBro with Ryder.

+ Swagger saved REALLY nicely from the botched ending to the tag match – Not sure how visible it was, but a keen eye could catch Truth botching an attempted Little Jimmy, and Swagger covered for it really nicely by hoisting him up onto a Powerslam and having Truth slip out the back and hit Little Jimmy again… Also, it looks like they are moving forward with breaking Ziggler up from Swagger and Vickie.

+Bryanvs. Punk as a match was great, but the storyline with Kane and AJ is intriguing beyond the pure wrestling aspect of this feud.

+ Big Show’s massacre to close RAW was really impactful in getting him over as a very big deal.

+ I want to point out the commentary throughout the night as being much above the par we’ve been used to.

Smackdown

+ RyBack remains awesome.

+ The Ziggler deal is really getting awesome. I love how he interrupted Vickie. I also love how he pushed Sheamus to the limit with some REALLY awesome spots (i.e. the top rope Facebuster)

+ I like Santino and Ryder (A.K.A CoBro) being a tag team, I was starting to get afraid they forgot about this pairing. What gives with the sudden finish though, and then Big Show buries them?! Not cool, that part is definitely a NO!

NO!

RAW

- They took the copout way with Big Show’s character by basically erasing his past as a face (as it was “strictly business”), instead of leaving the crowd with some complexity with him being a good guy doing bad things.

- A kick to the gut keeps Santino down for so long that Del Rio can lock in the cross Armbreaker with ease and carelessly? That’s even worse than Cena’s AA to Otunga last week! Not to mention – that’s theUSfreakin’ champion you just squashed there.

-Bryanvs. Punk ISN’T the main event? Doesn’t that seem wrong to anyone?

Smackdown

- The opening segment didn’t really get me into the show.

- When your Mexican sensation can’t enter the ring like he used to because he botched it constantly – you can start by, say, stopping with calling him a sensation. Also – Oh god, I forgot about the lights thing… Or just how terrible he is. They toned him down, and he STILL botched his backside off.

- Sandow didn’t hook the leg in his Russian Leg Sweep! I expected more from you Sandow, I expected more…

- I really want RyBack to face better competition, with the exception of Jacob Kaye (whom I still think should be hired as a career enhancement talent) every single local jobber RyBack has faced so far has been lackluster.

- Cryme Tyme Players? Oh PRIME Time Players. Now, why does that name sound familiar?…

Maybe?

? Did they turn Riley into a cowardly heel with a backstage segment? That’s how much his stock is worth, I guess… Then again it may have worked, Riley was the #1 Trend Worldwide(!) following that.

 Trial Run: IMPACT WRESTLING

As some of you asked for in the comments section, I will try to also cover IW in the rundown, final decision on the matter pending. Depending on the quality of the product, I will decide in the coming month whether or not adding Impact Wrestling to the Rundown permanently is going to be a good idea. I figured there would not be a better time to start than with the (yet another) revision of Impact as a live show with a change of pace – so without further ado (and because it rhymes) let’s get started with the

YES!

+ “previously on IMPACT” helps viewers who left after questionable booking who are giving IMPACT another shot again now – and I feel like there are a lot of them, and TNA knows this – a chance to catch up on current programming.

+ I also like Impact opening up, full steam ahead, with a high caliber match-up.

+ I would like to point out the subtle (something which Impact completely lacks as a whole – more in the NO! about that) way Christopher Daniels pulled the rope semi-casually when Roode had the Crossface locked in on Sting, so that Sting wouldn’t be able to get to the rope. Seeing as subtlety seems to be a bad word to Hogan and the writing team, I am sure he did that on his own merit – and good for him on it!

+ Abyss is really awesome. He pulls off this role as his brother really well, and it seems like an interesting storyline.

+ Unsurprisingly enough, Aries vs. Sabin was a big high point for the show.

+ One (AND ONLY!) good thing I can say about the Brooke Hogan segment – I really likeDixie’s new theme song.

+ The ending of Impact was very well done, a good segment to cap off a great match.

NO!

- OK, OK first thing’s first – that “#IMPACTLIVE” on the top left corner of the screen – TNA, at least TRY to make it seem like you aren’t copying WWE.

- Right off the bat with Sting vs. Roode you could tell TNA’s wrestling style is not as defined as WWE’s – the match started in a way no match should start, i.e. a complete mess that made no sense as a real match. It got the pops, but at a hefty cost.

- Having the heels on one side hitting the face when he’s out and the faces on the other throwing the heel back into the ring gently seems too much of a clean-cut heel/face divide that feeds the viewer with a spoon. No subtlety whatsoever, and this was a trend throughout the show with very few exceptions. Everything was completely obvious and out there with no viewer interpretation of events allowed. The whole thing makes TNA seem really Low Brow, unlike what WWE has been lately.

- Oh no… Brook Hogan is going to be an on-screen character? Who thought that was a good idea?! Oh, wait…

- The way Hogan announced the Slammiversary main event it seemed like having the World Title on the line on every PPV is not a given – which, if I’m a new fan watching for the first time (as I am sure TNA expected many people watching to be), would repel me from repeat viewing.

- Here are your picks forDevon’s challenger: RVD (former World Champion, well respected world-wide as a performer, main event talent), Mr. Anderson (see RVD), Jeff Hardy (see RVD and Anderson) and, the icing on the cake, Robbie E (see… Oh wait.) Did anyone really think, for a second, that Robbie E stood any sort of chance to be the challenger? I’d just make it 3 picks and be done with it, there’s no reason for Robbie E to be in that group of names as an option. I know he’s the former champion, but nonetheless. Luckily he knew it and had fun with it. Also – why didn’t Hardy get excited for the match? It devalues the title he’s going to compete for.

- “Your mother (who shot your father) is a coward, your father (father James freakin’ Mitchell) is a coward, and your brother (The Monster Abyss) is a coward” Does that seem absurd at all to anyone? I know TNA are trying to sweep Mitchell being Abyss’ father under the rug, and that’s exactly the problem.

- I need to NO! the Brooke Hogan segment in bullet points, as there is just so much:

  • Dixie’s not fit for microphone work.
  • TNA is too young for aHoF.
  • Dixiecheapened the knockouts with the smarmy “and I know you guys do too”, insinuating they are sex objects (which before Hogan & Bischoff came in was the furthest thing from the truth).
  • Brooke’s theme (which I assume was one of her songs) was HORRIBLE.
  • Brooke Hogan as a whole. Most fans BOOED her, even though she was meant to be Babyface. Her voice made me think she was going to say “Like, OMG” any second (you know – “I’m so excited to be here, like OMG”). Nepotismania is running wild in TNA, Brother!

Maybe?

? OK, so the following are developments I noticed in the opening segment since I last watched – Crimson has turned heel, Aries turned face, Angle apparently turned face again, Kaz shaved his head. Kaz & Daniels are now Tag Team champs. I will have further comments on some of those things as soon as I see where they go and how the company as a whole stands.

? Is Ray asking “who he is” a new thing?

? The Gut Check is very different from what we have seen before. It breaks Kayfabe though, and I am not sure how I feel about it.

I found Brooke Hogan’s NO! having some much NO! in it that you had to have bullet points was beyond hilarious. Keep it up.

  • The Dude

So I take it that you were not impressed with Sandow this week?

    • Guy Landau

Not as much as previous weeks, no. His mic work is awesome, but he seems to be struggling with his finisher, not to mention that horrendous slip up with the Russian Leg Sweep, as what he performed wasn't a leg sweep. I guess you can call that move a "Russian", but I don't know how well it will go over. Perhaps they'll suspend Sandow over it for 30 days after Russia complains about it.

  • Steve l

Thanks Guy as a reader who asked for Impact opinions I enjoyed it much appreciated it and keep up the good work.

  • Wedge 74

    Agree, Make Brooke go away.

    • Guy Landau

      Wish I could, buddy… Wish I could

  • Brandon Ceielo

I probably haven't commented on the Rundown yet, but keep Impact in. Haven't seen it myself in months, but I enjoyed reading your thoughts on it a lot.
