Weekly Rundown: King of Memphis

This blog reflects my subjective views and nothing more. If you disagree – which is encouraged – feel free to voice your opinion (in a civil manner) in the comments section.

Hello and welcome back to yet another edition of the Weekly Rundown hosted by yours truly, Guy Landau. This is a weekly feature on WrestlingNewsWorld.com where I gloss over the important happenings in WWE & TNA week as it pertains to the companies’ respective major shows, in the form of bulletins for the positive happenings (under the “YES!” column, and prefaced with + signs), the negative happenings (under the “NO!” column, and prefaced with – signs), and the ones I could not decide what they were, but felt they were important enough to comment on (Under the “Maybe?” column, and prefaced with ? signs).

So without further ado, let’s get started.

This week’s Rundown is dedicated to Jerry Lawler.

YES!

Impact Wrestling

+ EY is important enough to be in the in the “Previously on Impact…”!

+ Hardy vs. Joe was good because of the story it told and its flow. It was built slowly and finished with a submission on Joe’s injured arm.

+ Magnus vs. Joe is going to be interesting. If they have a match eventually, I wouldn’t mind it one bit.

+ Tara vs. Kim is what knockout matches should be like.

+ Great to finally see a development with Joey Ryan.

+ Bully Ray absolutely made his match with RVD. From his mimicry to his crisp offense (much unlike RVD in both fields in this match), he absolutely made this match, and I for one really enjoyed it. Bully should really become World Champion before long.

Smackdown

+ Ricardo is great. Actually, everyone was on queue in that opening segment. I liked del Rio referring to his Armbreaker as poetry.

+ I wouldn’t mind both Miz & Rhodes and Rey & Sin Cara being permanent tag teams. Cara in a team means less face(less) time and less botchability.

+ The Miz-Rhodes misqueue was interesting – is WWE perhaps going to turn one of them babyface?

+ “Booker… Or should I call you Mr. T?” Am I the only one who likes Otunga?

+ Bryan’s “Hug it Out”… finisher, I suppose.

+ The Ryder Resurgence. He’s got a little winning streak going.

+ Sandow is perhaps the best promo man in WWE right now in terms of how he portrays his character… Now if he would just hook the darn leg when he hits a Russian Leg Sweep!

+ Orton vs. Ziggler on PPV! Wohoo!

RAW

+ What an ovation for the Hitman! Well, considering what happened the last time he was in Montreal in a WWE ring, I guess no one should be surprised. But boy, was Punk on.

+ Great match between Punk and Orton. Not sure about whether I am for making it a tag match.

+ The amount of offense Kidd got against del Rio truly shocked me in the most positive sense. Well done.

+ Cole handled the situation with Lawler with a lot of class.

+ The sudden shift in Rhodes’ career is a very pleasant one.

+ “hillbilly Austin”? I sense a WM feud afoot.

+ After the end of RAW – Say “Cena Sucks” one more goddam time. I dare you, I double dare you… [complete on your own]

NO!

Impact Wrestling

- Tara vs. Kim – why did Kim pin Tara with her foot under the rope, and why did Taryn count that down?

- Is holding a man hostage really the way to be a babyface?

- Kind of weird that Magnus is seemingly in 2 very different feuds at the same time. I wouldn’t mind that one bit if there was more to it than him talking trash, but in both cases there really isn’t.

- Chavo and Hernandez had a lot of… unclear, for lack of a better term, offense. As weird as it may sound, them being Mexican does not automatically equip them with the chemistry needed to be a good team. Regardless, that match just fell apart completely for some reason. Too many botches, illegal tags, and psychological stumps that it was just unfathomable. Hey, remember match legalities? Yeah, neither does TNA, apparently.

- How many weeks is that in a row that the X Division hasn’t been featured? Why is Zema facing Dutt, then, with zero buildup?

- This is about the booking of No Surrender after it’s airing, as I couldn’t watch it because of time constraints. All important matches had the exact WRONG decision. All 3 BFG series matches had the wrong winners as far as I’m concerned.

Smackdown

- Smackdown is so short, considering they have about 10 minutes each week going just to a RAW Recap.

- Conspicuous by their absence from the #1 Contenders to the Tag Titles match are Gabriel & Kidd.

- Why did Booker wait this long to announce the Brogue is banished? He could’ve done that in the beginning of the match.

RAW

- Obviously, Lawler’s situation was unfortunate. However, since this is a review of the show and what was on it performance-wise, I will not go into detail about it. Needless to say he is in my mind in writing this Rundown.

- Why put 4 champions against one another in a tag match? Wouldn’t actually building their respective feuds for NoC be more beneficial?

- Remember how I loved the Anger Management last week? Well, Sheamus & Otunga’s segment was not really funny. It was a recycling of a bunch of jokes we all know (or at least I do, being Israeli you automatically have to know every Jewke – Jew Joke – there is)

- When has Alicia turned heel? It’s this kind of disregard that leaves the division in the state it’s in.

- What was the point of having AJ come out after Sheamus’ Brogue?

Maybe?

? Championship Impact is an interesting concept, but the verbal elimination is a bad concept.

? Good to see Barrett back, just… Why did he feel the need to steal Chris Hero (Kassius Ohno)’s offense? His new finisher was a short-arm Elbow, but not only is that eerily similar to Ohno’s finisher – We can only assume Ohno will debut soon, and then what? Besides, he didn’t really look like a raw bareknuckle fighter. He was too elegant.

? Well, PTP have also not beaten Kidd & Gabriel. I love the Kane/Bryan team, but I would really love seeing Kidd & Gabriel teaming on TV weekly.

I believe that WWE did handle the Jerry Lawler situation correctly and properly. Michael Cole did the classy thing. I'm taking a break from hating on Cole as we speak

  • cagekicker

Yes. they don’t seem to any real mechanism to just stop the show mid broadcast, so i feel they did the best they could and Micheal Cole was purely professional in how he handled the situation.

  • Christ 4 Life

PTP has beaten Kidd and Gabriel unfortunately…

  • Evon Reese

Punk was great at Montreal? BS. Cena owned him. He looked like a whipped Pup when Cena got through with him. You ignorant SOB was the best line of the night.

    • Guy Landau

Agreed, but remember – Punk is heel. He needs to lose arguments in that manner. Cena was great and if both gave in their all they’d be pretty much equal in my eyes – as they were leading to their series of matches last year.

      • Evon Reese

I will agree with that and if Montreal Cena shows up its going to be a great match
