Weekly Rundown: Picking Up Steam for WrestleMania!

This blog reflects my subjective views and nothing more. If you disagree with me, feel free to voice your opinion in a civil manner in the comments section.

Hello and welcome to The Weekly Rundown hosted by yours truly, Guy Landau. This is a weekly feature on WrestlingNewsWorld.com where I gloss over the important happenings in the week in WWE & TNA as it pertains to the companies’ respective major shows… and NXT, in the form of bulletins for the positive happenings (under the “YES!” column, and prefaced with + signs), the negative happenings (under the “NO!” column, and prefaced with – signs), and the ones I could not decide what they were, but felt they were important enough to comment on (Under the “Maybe?” column, and prefaced with ? signs).

So without further ado, let’s get started.

YES!

NXT

+ Solid opener.

+ Luke Harper (formerly Brodie Lee in the indies) showed some real brilliance in his match with Adrian Neville. He got Neville to wrestle well psychologically, which isn’t something you see a lot.

Impact Wrestling

+ AJ’s storyline is intriguing.

+ I really liked the finish to the main event #1 contender match.

Smackdown!

+ It’s great to see continuity in the booking – Sheamus not trusting Big Show makes perfect sense considering their heated feud late last year.

+ JBL is back. That is all.

+ I’m really looking forward to Henry vs. RyBack.

+ Swagger is really improving on the microphone. Zeb is paying dividends.

+ Rhodes Scholars are back together, apparently. Thank god, breaking them up was a huge mistake.

+ Drew McIntyre did everything in his power to look like a big fish in a small pond with 3MB – notice his intensity during the entrance, while the other two are doing their air guitars he looks into the ring thinking “this is my shot”. He really wasn’t into the air guitar bit, he half did it while looking at his opponents.

RAW

+ Strong opening segment for RAW.

+ I will continue to stand by my statement – Fandango is over.

+ I really like the Usos, but this was a good match to showcase Mark Henry’s dominance.

+ Thank God Cesaro didn’t lose AGAIN.

+ Triple H knows how to cut a promo.

+ I love seeing The Shield in action.

+ 3MB got a surprising amount of offense against RyBack, which is to say “I’m pleasantly surprised 1 man didn’t beat 3 men with more ease.”

+ AJ vs. Kaitlyn for ‘Mania is a much better match than Kaitlyn vs. Layla. It could mean that by the end of the night Ziggler’s posse walks out with 4 title belts – Divas, Tag and WHC.

+ I really liked the panel segment. It just goes to show that even a bad gimmick like a debate can work with talented enough people.

NO!

NXT

- When you introduce a new submission finisher, you don’t have your opponent reach the rope on the first time you use it.

- The promo between Regal and Ohno, while intended to be impactful, was very blah.

Impact Wrestling

- Why not bring the men out to their own music? I really don’t like the generic IW music. This is a

- The X-Division evolution SUCKS! This is not what the X-Division should be about. It shouldn’t be a gimmick, it should simply be the best cruiserweight division in the world. It can be that, without the weight limit by being about the in-ring style of the wrestlers involved. The 3 way stipulation basically forces every match to be a spot-fest, as we have seen in the past 2 weeks. Bad form, TNA. Bad form. Zema actually made some subtle fun of that in the match. After a very generic spot of pulling Dutt out of the ring he turned to the camera and said “OOOH! DID YOU SEE THAT?!”. At least, I prefer to see it as mockery of this new concept and of spot-fest as Zema Ion is someone who has really grown as a competitor to the point where he is the saving grace of the X-Division right now with Daniels, Kaz, AJ, Aries, Hardy, Chavo and Joe all being “too good” for the X-Division by TNA’s current standards.

- The Knockout Tag Team titles haven’t been defended in over a year now. Why not just retire them already?

- See? Told you. This is She-Shane Sewell.

Smackdown!

- At one point during Kofi vs. Ziggler Cole said: “almost déjà vu from Monday night”. I agree. This show was déjà vu from RAW. We have already seen these matches THIS WEEK. Why would we want to see them again so soon, and with the same outcome?

- Are we supposed to believe Fandango’s entrance was his own idea and unexpected when his entire set was set up?

- Can the secondary champions please get something to do so they can stop losing clean on a weekly basis?

RAW

- Why was there no referee present for Fandango’s “match” on RAW? And why was there no name for a wrestler he would face. Even in theory? #TheLittleThings, am I right Arda Ocal?

- What is there to gain from Jericho beating Ziggler cleanly? Ziggler was on a role that needed to continue and there is no reason Fandango doesn’t cost Jericho his match as well.

- Now, why was Triple H burying the IC champion necessary?

- Seeing Fandango’s dancing over Jericho in slow-mo was embarrassing. It wasn’t a move that was important to see, especially not in slow-mo to see the impact exactly.

- Booker, Mick’s been in the ring with both of them as well. Sorry, pal.

Maybe?

? I’m not sure how I feel about the Bully Ray reveal throughout the show – I like seeing how the whole thing played out in hindsight and seeing what I’ve missed, especially considering the fans that didn’t know Bully was going to turn didn’t see it coming and missed the clues, but this feels VERY familiar. A year and a half ago the very same method was used in regards to Immortal.

? It’s interesting to note that it appears we’ll get 2 debuts in WrestleMania – Big E and Fandango.

One of your no’s should have been the set up to the Kaitlyn vs. AJ match on Raw. I mean why was Kaitlyn hanging out in the men’s locker room and why did AJ walk into it?

    • The Breaker

Well, if you remember, AJ does have a history of barging into the men’s locker room..

  • James

Kaitlyn was with rhodes before aj attacked her
