Weekly Rundown – The return of Captain Charisma

This blog reflects my subjective views and nothing more – It is by no means objective. If you disagree – which is encouraged – feel free to voice your opinion (in a civil manner) in the comments section. Let’s get some healthy debates going. Also, I am always open to constructive criticism of the writing format, phrasing, etc. Feel free to do your own rundown via the comment section in the future (writing little notes as you watch the shows could be very engaging and fun – give it a try and tell us via the comment section what you wound up with)

Hello everyone and welcome back to the WrestlingNewsWorld.com Weekly Rundown. This is your feature where you can read my thoughts of the week that was in professional wrestling – most specifically WWE (as these will be a lot longer, and more negative if I wrote up… or at all watched Impact Wrestling). So without further ado, let’s get to the action with the Constants:

+ Daniel Bryan, Drew McIntyre, CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, Dolph Ziggler, Sheamus and Wade Barrett are the future of WWE – they are all total packages, both in the ring and on the mic.

+ WWE’s video package.

+ AJ, forever and always. This also leads nicely into:

- Matt “The Choice” Andrews. It’s a shame, really. I could like Matt… If only he’d leave AJ alone.

- The way announcing currently is in the WWE. In fact, the only announcer I can stand right now is Josh Mathews.

- Aksana’s cliché role that doesn’t seem to be really going anywhere.

- “The Royal Rumble winner gets to main event Wrestlemania” is a fallacy, and has been this way for several years now. For the past 5 or so years the winner of the Rumble has NEVER actually main evented ‘Mania.

- The way Divas are handled

? Drew McIntyre’s storyline. This will likely change very soon when (if) we see where it goes.

And with that out of the way, let’s get to this week’s Posits!

RAW

+ Cena’s Dr. of Thuganomics flashback was a nice touch. I didn’t like the rap itself very much, too much brown-nosin’ Cleveland for my taste.

+ Bryan seems to be developing an intimidation-based relationship with AJ. While I like it in the storyline sense, on a personal note – Bryan, I WILL kill you.

+ Taker vs. HHH is getting interesting by the second.

+ James Roday was really good at his role. You can tell he’s a WWE fan.

+ Interesting route they’re going with Jericho vs. Punk – Punk’s drunk father storyline could be very good or very bad. Let’s just hope it’s the former.

+ This is the first week since this whole thing began that I feel like Rock beat Cena. He was on his game, though I guess brown nosin’ Cleveland was the theme of tonight.

Smackdown

+ First thing (obviously) CHRISTIAN IS BACK!

+ AJ and Bryan both play their roles so well, and their storyline together is really interesting in my eyes.

+ Rhodes beating Khali. No other result would be in any way acceptable. Too bad it was given so much time, it’s Khali after all.

+ Finally, there is a reason for Kane vs. Orton. I liked Orton addressing himself embracing hate because it really fits the character.

+ Jericho and Punk really aren’t pulling any punches for their match, huh? Side note: Am I alone in seeing the blade in Jericho vs. Sheamus?

Now – no more Mr. Nice Guy (Landau). It’s time fore the Negs!

RAW

- How many weeks in a row is it that we’ve seen Ziggler vs. Sheamus with the same outcome? Don’t they have someone who ISN’T chalk-full of momentum to put under Sheamus? Not to mention it was the same finish as last week more or less (except botched – they tried to cover it by going a bit further after the botched White Noise, but I saw the ref telling them a new finish right before the Brogue Kick) The fact that Ziggler was trending against the rumble winner should show WWE how they should be prioritizing.

- Laurinaitis’ teams seems to be much more prominent than Teddy’s. You’ve got Henry already, and probably Christian and Del Rio if the segment at the Chamber is of any indication. (The fact that those names are captained by Otunga is a whole other Neg, for a different day)

- “I’m just getting my outfit together [instead of training]“? Am I the only one bothered by that comment for a non-wrestling article? How does it portray the female wrestlers? You tell me

- Ryder is magically healed? Of a BROKEN FREAKIN’ BACK (read in Kurt Angle voice)?! They should have just gave him a lesser injury if they wanted him for ‘Mania.

- Wasn’t Mahal pushed a month ago, beating DiBiase in a feud? Yeah, I didn’t think it’ll hold either. Sort of makes you wonder why they put him over in the first place.

- Both Rock and Cena basically rhymed insults at each other. Cena had no beat, and Rock played the same chord over and over again. Calling either “rap” or “rock” is really an insult. He also sang “We Will Rock you”, but as far as actually playing up to their respective genres, I think both failed miserably. Rock was much better tonight, though I think they just needed him to get an edge after getting owned by Cena last week (they did the same thing last year to get Cena over Rock verbally at one point – now the tables are turned.)

Smackdown

- The thing I don’t understand about the GMs feud is why, theoretically, both men are still employed. Teddy Long has abused his power and has been unfair to many people over his tenure, it’s just that they were heels. He isn’t a fair GM by any means – he was about to put Christian in a match because he joined the opposite team.

- Unless McIntyre will be on team Laurinaitis, this constant squashing does no-one any favors.

- Sheamus vs. Jericho was really off, considering the people involved in it. They seemed to botch some moves and they worked extra stiff at points.

- This edition of SD! as a whole left a lot to be desired. Not much happened overall.

And all that’s left is the Queschies:

? Funkasaurus’ return. We’ll see where it goes, if at all. Again.

So this was an interesting week – Raw was eventful – for better or worse, with a lot of good and bad happening on it. Smackdown on the other hand, save the return of Christian, felt really lackluster.

    WWE sucks!!!

    • Steven walker

Yet your on a wrestling web site..(drops mike)…………

    • Ryder

I'm not trying to start anything but I just have to say this if you think it sucks don't just say it sucks at least give reasons why something in wrestling sucks so we all can discuss this is what this sit is for

  • Moe

In regards to aksana. I bet she turns on teddy and goes with big johnny. Im beginning to feel like I’m the only one who actually saw her walk away with John in one of the wwe YouTube extras afew weeks back!

  • JamieSNZ

I agree with the above for the most part. However:

+Khali. THIS is how you use him! Feed him to good wrestlers, smaller wrestlers, so that it seems like a big deal when they beat him!
+Cena. I marked out when i heard his old music, i will admit. A solid promo, bit short for my liking but it got the job done. Interesting to hear the heat he got when he came out though…
+Rocks 1st song. Kept the crowd in the palm of his hand. Using what i like to call "The Foley". Keep repeating the name of the city you are in and you will keep getting pops.

-Rocks 2nd song. No, just no. If i could erase anything over the last week of WWE programming (other than NXT) it would be this.
-Drew McIntyre. It's time to do something with this guy. Using him as a glorified jobber is a waste of this guys talents. Add him to team whomever to be at WresleMania. Prove me wrong and give him and awesome ending to this storyline.
-Miz. Change the character. Change the finishing move. It sucks. While you are at it, change R-Truths. Nobody even knows when he hits it!
-Jack Swagger. Nobody cares about him when he is in the ring. The boy can flat out go, but im afraid he can't get over.
-Brodus Clay. DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT. A headbut, suplex and splash does not a wrestling match make.
-Diva's matches. Unless they have Beth Phoenix, Natalya, Tamina or Kharma involved somehow. Did you know that we have a Divas Champion?
-Do we have Tag Team Champions anymore? I look to see Kofi and Truth win the titles before WM.

? Does anybody else want Miz and Bryan as Tag Champs? I do!

And finally, i did not want to go here…
-Zack Ryder. I like Zack, i really do, but doing a twitter campaign to get on Team Teddy? Where have we seen this before? Why can WWE not book him to just come out, flatten Otunga, and announce he is on the team? THAT would get reactions!

  • @RatedMKD

I totally agree with your remark about Otunga being team captain. Of the five other spots on the team, two are taken in Christian and Mark Henry. Of the three remaining spots, I see five potential candidates: Del Rio, Miz, Ziggler, Swagger and McIntyre. McIntyre is the only man on that list not to have held a world title. So it could wind up with David Otunga being the captain of a team where everyone else has held a world title. I get that Laurinaitis would play favourites towards Otunga, but that just seems silly!

    • Guy Landau

Let me just say that McIntyre not holding a world title is in itself a travesty in my eyes.
