WWE Considering Major Programming Change When The WWE Network Launches

If WWE doesn’t agree to a new deal with SyFy to carry Smackdown there is talk about making the show a live-two hour broadcast and moving it to Thursday nights on the forthcoming WWE Network.

As Vince McMahon mentioned in Thursday’s conference call with investors, Smackdown’s contract with SyFy is coming up first and while SyFy is pleased with Smackdown in terms of ratings, it’s believed the network and WWE are not in agreement over money.

Additionally, I’m told WWE wants to have a quality first run live wrestling show on the WWE Network when it launches to entice people to pay the monthly fee. At this point nothing is confirmed as there remains no formal timetable for the WWE Network launch although the company is clearly considering their options and wants a live show on the network.

So, the plan is to put Smackdown vs Impact?

That sounds like a really bad idea.. I mean look what happened to WCW as an example. Sure circumstances are different financially but at the same time they’re essentially taking the same huge risk. Not to mention adding a huge amount of stress to the production team and creative. The WWE network just seems like a sign that Vince needs to hang it up and let someone else take over before he kills the company.
