Second Report: WWE Supershow House Show Results (2/20/10) - Springfield, Illinois
Written by Matt Turk on Feb 21, 2010 - 11:17:35 AM
Wrestling News World reader Matt Turk sent in the following report:
I attended the tri-branded house show on 2/20/10 in Springfield, Il. They have had about 4 house shows over the past 4 years here but this one was by far the biggest. In fact it set an attendance record with about 8500 people and there were about 400 people they had to turn away since they sold out about 20 minutes before the show. I got there at about 6:20 (about an hour before the show) and it took me about 45 minutes to get into the building due to the long line. I got settled into my seat at about 7:15 and the show started on time at 7:30. Justin Roberts is the ring announcer.
Match #1- It is always good to start off with a divas match. This one was Mickie James, The Bella Twins, and Eve vs Maryse, Beth Phoenix, Michelle McCool, and Layla. This match went about 10 minutes. All of the competitors received significant action in the match. I was particularly impressed with the Bella Twins athleticism as I really had not seen them wrestle much. Mickie James pins Alicia Fox with a DDT after a missed scissors kick for the win.
Match #2- Primo Colon vs Chavo Guerrero. This was a pretty good match between 2 high flyers. It went about 10 minutes. Primo performed quite a few of his aerial rope maneuvers and picked up the win by rolling Chavo Guerrero up after a missed frog splash.
Match #3- Ezekial Jackson vs Goldust. If you blinked you might have missed this match. This match lasted about 1 minute. Jackson pins Goldust with the Book of Ezekial (a variation of a spinebuster) after Goldust went for a cross body.
Match #4- Christian vs Tyler Reks. It was nice to see Christian. He received quite a pop from the crowd. I really didn't know what to expect from Reks as I had only seen him wrestle a handful of times on ECW. Christian performs most of his signature maneuvers including his second rope sunset flip and his inverted kick from between the ropes. Reks finally eats the Killswitch and Christian wins this one.
Match #5- ShowMiz vs MVP and Mark Henry. Miz and Show come to the ring. The Miz cuts a pretty good heel promo saying that the crowd wishes it were him and that he is "awesome." MVP interrupts him and the match starts. The Miz wrestles almost the entire match. There was one brief spot where The Big Show delivered a splash to Mark Henry and I thought the building shook. The match ends when the referee is distracted by Mark Henry allowing the Big Show to nail a "knockout punch" from the ring apron onto MVP allowing Miz to pin MVP.
Match #6- Kofi Kingston vs Carlito. In my opinion this was the second best match of the show. I was really surprised at the effort that I saw Carlito put into this match especially for someone often criticized for having a poor ethic and bland matches. Kofi's athleticism really shined. He is a future main eventer for sure. There were so many great counters in this match. Carlito used his trademark apple spit on Kofi in this match. There was one great spot where Kofi went for the "Trouble in Paradise", Carlito ducked and went for a Backcracker which was countered again by Kofi and this time he connects with the Trouble in Paradise for the win. As a longtime wrestling fan I really appreciated the match these two put on. There is an intermission after this.
Match #7- Drew McIntyre vs Kane. I don't know but this match seemed kind of boring. I think the highlight was the cool entrance that McIntyre has. McIntyre cut a promo saying he is the future of the company and saying the Kane is a has been before Kane interrupts and comes to the ring. Only cool thing in the match was Kane for the chokeslam and McIntyre countering and the action spilling outside the ring. The match ended in a double count out. I think since they are going to be squaring off for the IC title the next night at Elimination Chamber they didn't want to have McIntyre beat Kane fair and square since that would most likely spoil the ending of the match for tomorrow's PPV since McIntyre is supposed to win. I don't think this feud should last past 1 PPV.
Match #8- John Morrison vs CM Punk (with Lou Gallows). Going to back so some of the old ECW matches that John Morrison and CM Punk had in the past I feel that they have good chemistry together and this match was no exception. Punk did a great heel promo before the match talking about all of the alcoholics and prescription drug addicts in Springfield (I think he is not far from the truth on this one). Lots of action and near falls in this match. I think Morrison was selling an ankle injury in this match. Punk worked on Morrison's leg extensively in the match and went for a GTS but Morrison slipped out of it and landed the flying Chuck Kick. Gallows tries to get involved and Morrison kicks him for his efforts and finally delivers the Starship Pain and picks up the 3 count. This was a great match between 2 guys who never fail to impress which highlighted Morrison's athleticism and Punk's ring savvy.
Match #9 Main event. John Cena, Edge, and Undertaker vs Randy Orton, Sheamus, and Batista. Introductions are underway and Orton is the first one out. Orton actually gets quite a few cheers most likely being from nearby St. Louis. Shaemus is out next and it is a chorus of boos. Batista is out next and it seems half the arena is booing and half are cheering. John Cena is out next. I thought the roof was going to blow off this place. Almost everyone was on their feet. The Cena nation was in full force but I am definitely not one of them. Edge is out next and once again the fans give him a tremendous pop. It is weird that Edge gets injured, comes back and is now a babyface. It kind of reminds me of when HHH went down with the quad injury in 2001 he was strong heel but when he came back in 2002 all of a sudden he was a babyface as well. The Undertaker is out next. I had waited 20 years for this entrance and he didn't disappoint. His entrance is great even without pyro. This match had PPV main event written all over it. It is rare to find this kind of action at a house show. Edge and Orton start the match. Cena gets tagged in and so does Sheamus. Sheamus is doing a good job selling Cena's moves. The Undertaker is pacing on the ring apron and finally gets tagged in. He goes to work on Batista. The match finally ends with a medley of finishing maneuvers. First, Batista spears John Cena and he is outside the ring with Cena. Then Edge spears Sheamus. Orton hits the RKO on Edge but turns right around into a Tombstone piledriver. The Undertaker pins Orton in the middle of the ring and the crowd goes wild. The match clocks in at around 20 minutes and all of the competitors saw action. After the match the Undertaker does his kneeldown pose with the World Heavyweight title. Then he leaves and Edge and John Cena shake hands and embrace in the middle of the ring. Wow, I did not see that coming. What a great show and a great match. The show was about 2 hours and 45 minutes total in length.
On a side note I waited around and met Sheamus after the event. He is really cool and really huge when you get up close to him. His is Irish accent is definitely not fake either. I think if I had to rate this show I would give it a 10 out of 10. You don't get very many house shows as good as this. Seeing the Undertaker as World Heavyweight Champion live was a dream of mine and maybe I saw his last night as champion.
Biggest pops:
1. John Cena
2. Undertaker
3. Edge
4. Kofi Kingston
5. Christian
Biggest Boos:
1. CM Punk
2. Sheamus
3. Drew McIntyre
4. Ezekial Jackson
5. Carlito
That is about all I got for now guys. Take care
