Second Report: WWE Supershow House Show Results (9/12/09) - Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Written by Allen Kirshner on Sep 13, 2009 - 9:20:28 AM
Wrestling News World reader Allen Kirshner sent in the following report:
The show was held at Scotiabank Place, Ottawa's largest sports arena and home of the NHL's Ottawa Senators. There are three levels of seats. The uppermost level was entirely curtained off, with only the lower two levels being used. There was also a fair bit of floor seating, given that it's primarily a hockey arena and fairly spacious. Floor seating appears sold out, with the first and second levels mostly full. I'd estimate maybe 10,000 are in attendance, give or take a thousand or two. I'm seated on the second level, to the right of the ring. The view is good.
The crowd is multi-generational. There are a lot of families with kids but also a healthy dose of twenty somethings. As one might expect, the crowd is also peppered with some people who look like they don't come out of their basements terribly often. But, everyone behaves themselves.
The card began on time, at 7:30pm. The in-ring announcer for most of the show is Tony Chimmel, the regular ECW match announcer. He was also the announcer three years ago, the last time I was at a live WWE event...in that case, a Smackdown house show. This time around, it's a Supershow, with all three brands represented.
MATCH #1 -- THE GREAT KHALI vs DOLPH ZIGGLER
The Great Khali comes out to a solid pop. He works the crowd quite nicely as he makes his way to the ring. Ranjan Singh is not with him. Dolph Ziggler comes out and does a decent job drawing heat. The match begins with Ziggler exiting the ring, then re-entering, then exiting, all in comic fashion. That goes on for a couple of minutes. This was otherwise a relatively short match, with Ziggler playing the jester and Khali the slow, but methodical giant. Khali hits the Khali double handed chokeslam for the win. He continues to try and get the crowd going as he leaves. Ziggler milks the injured wrestler routine for a couple of minutes before leaving.
After the first match (or the second, but I think the first), Tony Chimmel announces the special guest host for the night is none other than ECW general manager, Tiffany. She's in the crowd, on the second level, one section to the right of me. She asks a young fan a trivia question. Who is CM Punk's opponent at Breaking Point? The crowd yells the answer, but the kid probably knew it anyway. It's the Undertaker. The kid and his family get to move to ringside, where they will be Tiffany's special guests for the evening.
MATCH #2 -- SHEAMUS vs GOLDUST
Sheamus comes to the ring and takes the microphone. He expresses his 'empathy' for the crowd because this is Ottawa and they are stuck supporting the Senators (NHL club). He manages to draw some heat. Goldust comes to the ring, minus the wig. He gets a pretty decent pop. The match goes back and forth, as has been the case on ECW. There's noticeably more ground wrestling here than in the first match. A few two counts before Sheamus hits his sideslam backbreaker to score the pinfall. He leaves, drawing some heat. Goldust leaves and works the crowd a bit.
MATCH #3 -- DIVAS SIX-WOMAN TAG, NATALYA, JILLIAN HALL AND ALICIA FOX vs THE BELLA TWINS AND GAIL KIM
Crowd pops very nicely upon hearing it's a six divas tag match. Surprisingly, the match was allowed to unfold, lasting what seemed like close to 15 minutes. The Bella twins are more impressive with their in-ring ability than they've shown on WWE programming. Natalya is also a very respectable in-ring performer. Alicia Fox is barely in the match and Gail Kim enters after about ten minutes. In the end, Gail Kim hits quite a creative finisher. She lifts her leg up, running it parallel to Jillian's arm. She falls back, pulling Jillian with her, hyperextending Jillian's arm. The force of Gail hitting the canvas propels Jillian backwards. Gail then rolls her up for the three count. She and the Bella Twins celebrate the victory.
MATCH #4 -- CARLITO vs EVAN BOURNE
Crowd is mostly pro-Evan Bourne, with a few Carlito fans. This was probably the best technical match of the night, although it wasn't particularly long. Both wrestlers showcased a good arsenal of moves. Bourne charges Carlito (propped up by the corner turnbuckles) early on. Carlito steps out of the way but Bourne turns it into a moonsault, landing on his feet. Carlito does most of the damage throughout the match. Bourne turns it around in the end. He hits a superplex, with both he and Carlito standing on the top rope. Bourne then hits the Shooting Star Press for the win.
MATCH #5 -- THE HART DYNASTY vs CRYME TYME
The Hart Dynasty comes out (just Tyson Kidd and David Hart Smith, no Natalya). Tyson Kidd takes the microphone and says he doesn't care what the crowd thinks and that he is glad this is the last time they will be in Ottawa, presumingly suggesting the WWE will never come back and not that he will be wished well in his future endeavours sometime soon. Cryme Tyme come out and Shad Gaspard immediately jumps over the barrier and starts working the crowd. The teams take turns controlling the action. Cryme Tyme showcases more moves than on TV. Eventually Shad Gaspard receives the hot tag. He hits an interesting finisher. He and DH Smith are face-to-face. He puts his right leg around Smith's right leg, falling backwards as he pulls Smith forward, crashing to the ground. He pins Smith for the win.
After the match, a couple of kids are led into the ring. They model t-shirts, which are available for sale, as are a limited number of John Cena autographed plaques. They chuck a few t-shirts into the crowd and each get a plaque for their troubles. This leads into a 15 minute intermission, which goes from 8:45pm to 9pm.
MATCH #6 -- US TITLE MATCH, KOFI KINGSTON vs THE MIZ
The Miz comes out and draws heat. Crowd gives a nice pop for Kofi Kingston, who works the enthusiasm. The match is solid, with both wrestlers given time to show their abilities. The highlight is a high kicking contest, with each one getting in some good shots. When all is said and done, Kingston hits the 'Trouble in Paradise' and scores a pinfall to retain the belt. Kingston vs Miz for the U.S. title has also been added to Breaking Point, replacing the Morrison / Ziggler Intercontinental title match.
Tiffany comes out to introduce the next bout.
MATCH # 7 -- TRIPLE THREAT MATCH FOR THE ECW TITLE, WILLIAM REGAL VS TOMMY DREAMER VS CHRISTIAN
Regal draws good heat with his entrance. Crowd pops for Tommy Dreamer but really pops for Christian, who's in his home country. He's also in his home province for the first time since rejoining WWE. The match starts and Regal exits the ring, standing on the apron. Eventually, Christian and Dreamer suplex him in. Christian raises his arms to gauge how much of a pop he can get. He points to Dreamer (pop), then to Regal (heat) and does this a few times. Regal plays the classic bad guy, dropping to his knees begging not to be hit, then back on his feet asking for a handshake. All three go after each other, with Dreamer outside the ring for a good part of the time. Christian hits the Unprettier / Killswitch on Regal and gets the pin to retain the belt.
At some point during the night, possibly now, kids are reminded not to try this at home.
MATCH #8 -- THE MAIN EVENT, THE BIG SHOW and RANDY ORTON vs TRIPLE H and JOHN CENA
Show draws a mixed reaction. Orton milks his entrance, coming across as being pissed. He slowly makes his way to the ring. Crowd pops huge for Triple H, then delivers the biggest cheer of the night for John Cena. Not bad to have arguably the two most popular guys on the house show, teaming together. Match is solid throughout, but no real surprises. Big Show mocks Cena's 'you can't see me' gesture. Eventually there's a prolonged beatdown of Triple H. Of course, he does manage to hit the hot tag to Cena. In time, Big Show gets tossed out of the ring and Cena hits the FU / Attitude Adjustment on Orton to score the pinfall. Afterward, he and Triple H climb the turnbuckles to continued huge pops. Thus ends the night.
