WWE SmackDown/ECW House Show Results (04/16/08) - Birmingham, England

Written by Jonny G & Callum Dower on Apr 17, 2008 - 1:10:48 PM

WNW reader Jonny G sent in the following report:

Hi, I thought I'd send in these results from the 16/4 Smackdown/ECW House Show from the WWE Wrestlemania Revenge Tour A few notes about the show:

- Legitimate sell out crowd- Lots of Wooooooo! and Kennedy chants before the show

- Lots of Batista and Undertaker signs. Teddy Long kicks us off by announcing some of the matches for the night: The Great Khali will be fighting Finlay who will be with his buddy Hornswoggle (to a large pop). Also we will see CM Punk taking on Chavo Guerrero. And finally, we will witness the first defence of the Deadman's throne. That's right, tonight, Undertaker will be taking on Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship. Holla Holla, Playas!

1. WWE Tag Team Champions The Miz and John Morrison def. Jimmy
Wang Yang and Shannon Moore. The crowd were really pumped up for the opener as Morrison talks trash to the Birmingham crowd for five minutes. Miz and Morrison taunt and pose for nearly five minutes, agitating the crowd even more. Some high flying moves from the face team result in a moonsault pin from Wang Yang which
Morrison breaks up. As Wang Yang went to complain, The Miz rolled him up for the victory to retain the championships. Decent opener

2. Kofi Kingston def. Shelton
Benjamin Half of the crowd didn't now who Kinston was but they got behind him after a few acrobatic kicks. Benjamin hits his T - Bone suplex for a two count but Kofi connects with the buzzsaw kick for the three count.

3. Kelly Kelly won a Divas Best Body Contest over Victoria and Eve Torres.

4. Mark Henry def. Tommy Dreamer
Much less of a squash than I anticipated with Dreamer getting in some early offense. Henry managed to reverse a DDT attempt into a World Strongest Slam for the three count. On his way out, Henry was slagged off by one of the fans. He got up on the rails in a really scary moment. Henry is massive live! The crowd went wild when six man tag action was announced.

5. The Big Show, Matt Hardy and Batista def. Curt Hawkins, Zack Ryder and United States Champion MVP. Porter talked trash to the crowd before the match, but Batista started out in control. Frequent double teams from the heel side meant Batista was prone to double stomping in the corner. MVP was tagged in so Hardy was too. Illegal interferences resulted in MVP controlling the match for the next five minutes or so. A hot tag to Batista, many clothes lines and a thunderous spinebuster got the crowd on their feet. Big Show scared off MVP with a steel chair, allowing Hardy to hit a twist of fate into a Batista Bomb for the victory. After the match Batista and Big Show stayed to take photos and high five every member of the crowd. This was one of the best matches of the night.

There was a fifteen minute intermission.

6. Finlay (w. Hornswoggle) def. The Great Khali This was definitely the funniest match of the night. During it, Hornswoggle juggled the threw the balls at Khali, squirted water at the giant, and passed Finlay the shillelagh so Finlay could get the win. After the match, Finlay squirted the crowd with water. Just before this match, Justin Roberts announced that it had been changed to a Triple Threat Match for the ECW World Title!

7. ECW World Champion Kane def. CM Punk and Chavo Guerrero (Triple threat Match) This was again one of the best matches of the night. Kane's pyro is HOT! We saw all three finishers as well as the three amigos. The Frog Splash got a two count before CM Punk broke it up. The GTS gained a strong two count before Kane broke it up. An incredible double chokeslam (perfectly executed) from Kane won it. I don't know why this following match was placed this high up the card.

8. Kenny Dykstra def. Jamie Noble Just an average match up which was really just an anti climax before the main event. The end
came with a crossface from Noble which was rolled through by Dykstra.

9. World Heavyweight Champion The Undertaker def. Edge My match of the night. A solid, twenty five minute match with lots of high spots, signature moves, spectacular entrances and false finishes. For the first five minutes we saw mat wrestling, before Edge countered two Old School attempts to gain control. Both a top rope suplex from Edge and a Last Ride form Taker received strong two counts. A triangle choke attempt was countered, and Edge was able to connect with his signature spear for a count of 2.9. A thunderous Chokeslam gave the referee another close call, but Edge just managed to get his shoulder up. Edge countered a Tombstone attempt and went for one of his own. The Deadman flipped Edge over so that Edge was in Tombstone position. Undertaker connected, and put Edge in the RIP position for a count of three. Undertaker successfully defends his World Heavyweight Championship to a massive pop from the crowd.

Biggest Pop
1. The Undertaker
2. Batista
3. Matt Hardy

Biggest Heat
1. Edge
2. MVP
3. The Miz and John Morrison

Match of the night Edge vs The Undertaker

WNW reader Callum Dower sent in the following report:

Me, my twin, dad, brother and cousin all attended the WWE Smackdown Wrestlemania Revenge tour at the NEC Arena in Birmingham on 16/04/08, my third live event in four years. The Arena was fully sold out, with about 6000 people there in attendance. Some seats by the entrance stage where blocked off due to the pyro and lighting set up being placed there. Loads of little kids there, a very young male dominated audience, myself included.

The show opened at 7.30pm with Justin Roberts coming down to the ring and introducing the show. He then welcomed Teddy Long to the ring. He warmed the crowd up by getting us to chant ‘Holla-Holla’. He announced The Great Khali VS Finlay (With Hornswoggle), Chavo Guerrero VS CM Punk and a rematch for the World Heavyweight Championship The Undertaker VS Edge for later on in the night, at which point the crowd was going wild. Teddy then said lets get the show started, fireworks went off and we were under way.

Match 1: Shannon & Jimmy VS Morrison & The Miz
This match was for the WWE Tag Team Titles. Before the match began Morrison worked the crowd, by taking the mick out of how Birmingham people speak. He kept on pronouncing the name of the City wrong; he kept saying ‘Berminharm’. Once the match was under way it was a very slow start but picked up towards the end of the match. The Miz and Morrison won. A decent match to get the crowd warmed up for the night ahead.

Match 2: Kofi Kingston VS Shelton Benjamin
Kingston came out to a big pop from the audience, although most of the younger audience did not have a clue whom he was. An average match, the crowd wasn’t really into this match and it dragged on for a bit. A few high spots during the match, nothing special. The outcome saw Kingston win. After the match Shelton was selling some sort of an injury and was being booed out of the Arena.

Match 3: Mark Henry VS Tommy Dreamer
Mega heat on Mark Henry, huge pop for Dreamer. A total squash match, with Tommy hardly getting in any moves. Henry would toy with him a bit, by standing on him and tossing him around. Mark Henry is massive in person, much bigger than he looks on TV. As you would of guessed, Mark Henry won!

Best Body: Victoria VS Eve Torras VS Kelly Kelly
Justin Roberts announced that all three woman would parade around the ring one at a time, and the winner would be decided by whoever had the loudest cheer. Eve and Kelly really impressed every single man in attendance. Victoria however, was acting a bit of a fool by going on the top rope for example and falling off it. She was acting it too much I felt. Either way Kelly won, and Victoria attacked her, so Eve and Kelly double teams her with Justin Roberts getting involved by trying to break them up, but falling over and them fighting on top of him… Lucky him!

Match 4: Edgeheads & MVP VS Matt Hardy, Batista & Big Show
Edgeheads entered first, following by MVP. He then worked the crowd saying that the crowd should brush out teeth because we smell. Hawkings held up a toothbrush and Ryder held up toothpaste. Matt Hardy then entered to a massive pop, followed by Big Show who came in with pyro, then Batista who also came in with pyro, which was very loud and made some people jump. A very good match, one of the best of the night. Loads of fun spots and action packed sections. The outcome saw Batista pick up the win for his team via the Batista Bomb.

Justin Roberts announced a 15-minute intermission. Me and Dad wondered down to the ringside area to take some pictures during this time, however security were telling people to go away. The queues for the food, drink, merchandise stands and toilets were huge. Hardly anyone was back in time for the next part of the show.

Match 5: The Great Khali VS Finlay (With Hornswoggle)
Enters Khali who is massive. Finlay then comes down to the ring with Hornswoggle to a massive cheer by everyone. An average wrestling match, nothing special. However they made it fun and entertaining, with Hornswoggle and Khali having a stare down, Horny throwing juggling balls at Khali and him shooting the 7ft3 monster with a water gun. In the end saw Finlay. Afterwards Hornswoggle and Finlay had a water fight in the ring.

Justin Roberts stated that the next match has just been changed into a triple threat and was now for the ECW Championship. A big pop at that point, as people now knew they were going to see Kane. Loads of people were in favour of Kane.

Match 6: CM Punk VS Chavo Guerrero VS Kane – ECW Title
Kane entered to loud fireworks. Chavo was booed like mad and every little kid under the age of 10 was cheering for CM Punk. A very good wrestling match, however CM Punk got knocked out of the ring, and once he re-entered someone else would leave the ring. There were hardly ever 3 people in the ring at the same time, more like a single fight. The ending saw Kane double chock slam CM Punk and Chavo at the same time for the double pin.

Match 7: Kenny Dystra VS Jamie Noble
What the hell? Why did they put this match so late on during the event? It totally killed the atmosphere. People used this match for a bathroom break or to buy something from the very over-priced stands. This match went on for about 10 minutes and no one was taking any interest. I can’t even remember who won it was so bad and boring.

Justin Roberts thanked everyone for coming to see WWE Smackdown. He said something about Make-A-Wish-Foundation and said two children’s names, also Circle Of Champions. Can’t really remember everything that was said.. He than announced our main event: The Undertaker VS Edge!

Match 8: Edge VS The Undertaker – World Title
Edge entered with a load of fireworks, which no one was expecting so it made a few people flinch. Then the lights went off, the crowd roared and in came Undertake with smoke falling filling the Arena. He took his time entering the ring, and then removed his hat and jacket. The World Heavyweight Title looks amazing. The crowd was really into this match, and what an awesome match it was. Choke slams, spears, last rides, snake eyes, old schools, triangle chock and much more. The ending saw Edge going to Tombstone Taker but he reversed it and Tombstoned him for the 3 count. Undertaker posed for about 10 minutes with the title, as the show ended there.

Verdict: A very good show apart from a few lack-busting star studded matches. However I will be going to see WWE again next year for sure with a great show like this. The main event was fantastic and everyone went away very happy, with money worth spent. My first Smackdown show.

Other Notes: Security was very heavy of fans going to the barriers near the ring. They also ejected around 3 people from where I was situated for video recording. I can only assume that loads were evicted from the Arena because of this. Everything was way over priced and no superstars were backstage to greet any fans from what I saw which was a shame.

Worst Matches:
1: Kenny Dystra VS Jamie Noble
2: Kofi Kingston VS Shelton Benjamin

Best Matches:
1: The Undertaker VS Edge
2: 6 Man Tag Team Match

Biggest Pops:
1: Batista/Undertaker
2: Big Show/Kane
3: CM Punk
4: Matt Hardy
5: Hornswoggle

Biggest Heat:
1: Edge
2: MVP
3: Miz & Morrison
4: Chavo Guerrero
5: The Great Khali
